Vegetation of exotic fast-growing species Sonneratia apetala increases the potential of methylmercury production: Insights from carbon bioavailability, microbial metabolism and mercury methylators.

Mangrove sediments are hotspots for neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg) production, with litter-derived organic carbon strongly affecting mercury (Hg) methylation. However, the specific role of carbon bioavailability in regulating net MeHg production remains unclear. This study investigated sediments vegetated by exotic fast-growing Sonneratia apetala (SA) and native Kandelia obovata (KO) in southern China. Contrary to the expectation that larger carbon pools enhance methylation, MeHg levels were 2.1-2.6 times higher in SA sediments despite KO containing 1.2-4.2 times more total organic carbon. Th

Multipoint immobilization of papain via its inert centre offers an attune pH extractor: selective separation of CH3Hg+ from inorganic mercurials in aqueous admixtures using extractor's cystine residues.

Without any pre-traetment, the selective separation of CH3Hg+ from Hg22+ and Hg2+, in aqueous admixtures is a long-pending issue; herein, is harnessed with solid-phase extraction using 'silica-gel immobilized papain', {Si(OSi)4 (H2O)x}n{OSi(CH3)2-O-C6H2(NN+)3(papain)}4.yH2O; where, x(0.3), n(1057) and y(2677) (determined instrumentally). Method development and production of an ambient-stable blood certified reference material for total mercury, methylmercury, and trace elements.

BACKGROUND: Certified reference materials (CRMs) for mercury speciation of biological fluids have hitherto been limited to frozen or cold-storage types, which impedes the participation of laboratories in tropical or remote regions. Existing CRMs often do not fully meet user needs, particularly regarding storage stability and concentration relevance. RESULTS: Using pooled Japanese human blood, we developed a freeze-dried, ambient-stable blood CRM, with certified values of 6.16 μg L-1 for total mercury (THg) and 5.46 μg L-1 for methylmercury (MeHg, as Hg). These concentrations are congruent wit

Human Milk as a Biomonitor of Toxic Metal Exposure: Sources, Transfer Mechanisms, and Implications for Infant Health-A Review.

Human milk (HM) is recognized as the optimal source of nutrition for infants, providing essential nutrients, bioactive compounds, and immunological protection crucial for proper growth and development. However, due to increasing environmental pollution, HM may also serve as a vector for exposure to toxic substances, including heavy metals. These contaminants originate from both current environmental exposure and long-term accumulation in maternal tissues, which may be mobilized during pregnancy and lactation. Objectives: The aim of this review was to comprehensively analyze the occurrence, sou

Mixture Effects of Metals, PCBs, Dioxins, and Furans on Liver Function.

Quantifying the mixture effects on humans exposed remains challenging because mixture components are correlated and may act bidirectionally by exhibiting nonlinear dose-response relationships, which may contribute to subclinical organ dysfunction. The liver is a vital organ in the body with broad functions, making it vulnerable to injury as it is the first organ exposed to circulating toxicants, which can precipitate hepatic damage. Our study's objective was to evaluate the combined and component-specific associations of a multi-chemical exposure mixture of heavy metals, polychlorinated biphen

Evaluation of riverine suspended particulate matter sampling with sedimentation boxes and flow-through centrifuges for total mercury and methylmercury analysis.

Mercury (Hg) is a highly toxic element. Despite recent efforts in reducing emissions, large amounts of anthropogenic Hg and its different species are still present in riverine systems. A common sampling technique for suspended particulate matter (SPM), the main carrier phase of Hg in river waters, are sedimentation boxes. Yet, their accuracy and representativeness with respect to changing hydrological conditions and preservation of Hg including methylmercury (MeHg) has not been investigated. This study investigates the annual cycle of total Hg, MeHg, and total organic carbon (TOC) contents fro

Microbial diversity regulates mercury cycling in paddy soils.

Microbial mercury (Hg) methylation and methylmercury (MeHg) demethylation critically govern MeHg production in paddy soils and its accumulation in rice. However, how the decline in microbial diversity under climate change affects these processes remains unclear. Here, we combined stable isotope tracing with a dilution-to-extinction approach to manipulate microbial diversity across paddy soils with Hg contamination gradient (HX: 165 ng/g, GX: 20,707 ng/g and SK: 659,303 ng/g), investigating its effects on Hg methylation and demethylation. Results showed that diversity loss suppressed methylatio

Comparative analysis of metals, pesticides, mycotoxins, microbial contaminants and THC potency in illegal and regulated cannabis inflorescences in Canada.

BACKGROUND: Following the legalization of recreational cannabis in Canada under the Cannabis Act (2018), regulatory frameworks were implemented to ensure product safety, quality, and consistency within the legal market. Previous studies revealed significantly greater pesticide contamination in illegal cannabis than in legal products. In light of these findings, the present study expands contaminant surveillance to include the quantification of Δ⁹-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and a broader range of potential toxicants, including metals, pesticides, mycotoxins, and microbial agents. METHODS: Fifty

Mercury in Retrograde: The Tale of Toxicity.

INTRODUCTION: Mercuric chloride is a highly toxic inorganic compound with historical medical use but severe potential for harm when ingested. Acute mercury poisoning is rare but can lead to multiorgan toxicity, particularly affecting the kidneys and gastrointestinal tract. Prompt recognition and intervention are essential to prevent long-term sequelae and mortality. CASE PRESENTATION: An 18-year-old male with a psychiatric history presented one hour after intentional ingestion of five mercuric chloride tablets. He exhibited mild abdominal symptoms, and initial laboratory studies revealed prot

On the importance of relativistic corrections to the vibrational averaging of molecular properties: A zeroth-order regular approximation study on selected mercury compounds.

Relativistic effects play a crucial role in the accurate prediction of spectroscopic properties of heavy-element compounds, yet their impact on vibrational corrections remains insufficiently explored. In this work, we assess the influence of scalar and spin-orbit relativistic treatments on vibrational corrections to electric field gradients (EFGs), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) shielding constants, chemical shifts, and spin-spin coupling constants (SSCCs) for seven mercury(II) compounds: HgCl2, HgBr2, HgI2, Hg(SH)2, H3CHgCl, H3CHgBr, and H3CHgI. Calculations were performed within density fu

Influences on bioaccumulation and biota-sediment accumulation factors for methyl-mercury in High Arctic lake food webs.

Mercury (Hg) concentrations in the fillets of Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus) differ widely among neighboring oligotrophic lakes on Cornwallis Island (Nunavut, Canada), but the reasons for these differences are poorly understood. Climate change is likely affecting Hg cycling in lakes, although studies report conflicting or mixed responses. We quantified Hg bioaccumulation (BAFs), biota-sediment accumulation (BSAFs), and trophic transfer factors (TTFs) for chironomids and Arctic char in Char, Small, Resolute, and Meretta Lakes to explain lake-to-lake differences. Simultaneously, we leveraged t

Multi-matrix biomonitoring of human exposure to extreme levels of atmospheric mercury in urban artisanal gold mining areas: A Colombian case study.

Artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) is the largest anthropogenic source of atmospheric mercury (Hg) globally, yet residential airborne Hg data and associated health impacts remain scarce in urban ASGM settings. The Atrato River basin combines intense ASGM activity with fish-dependent communities, making it a priority region for exposure assessment. We assessed (i) seasonal airborne elemental Hg (THg-Air) in urban Quibdo (QO) and rural Negua (NA); (ii) urinary total Hg (THg-U), hair total Hg (THg-Hair), and hair methylmercury (MeHg-Hair); and (iii) the relative contributions of inhalat

High-efficiency and targeted Hg(II) adsorption on sulfur-functionalized mesoporous silica via thiol-ene click chemistry: Dual-site coordination, performance, and mechanisms.

Mercury (Hg) contamination in industrial wastewater poses a significant environmental and health threat. Efficient and targeted removal of Hg(II) is essential to prevent its release into aquatic environments. In this study, sulfur-functionalized mesoporous silica (SFMS) was synthesized via a thiol-ene click chemistry strategy to introduce thiol and thioether groups onto a mesoporous silica framework for Hg(II) capture. SFMS exhibited a strong affinity for Hg(Ⅱ), attributed to dual sulfur coordination sites, enabling efficient removal even under competitive ion conditions. The distribution coef

Fe (III)-mediated enhancement of Bacillus sp. SSAU2 resilience against Hg (II) toxicity and restoration of its Cr (VI) removal efficiency in a mercury-contaminated environment.

Industrialization and urbanization have led to increasingly severe impacts on environmental sustainability, through the release of heavy metals into the environment. This study employed a sustainable approach involving metallic treatment and an acclimatization process to enhance the resilience of the microbe Bacillus sp. SSAU2 against Hg (II) toxicity. The findings revealed that acclimatization at 0.05 ppm Hg (II) and 0.2 ppm Fe (III) treatment significantly improved Hg (II) tolerance, with the 300% increase in the Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) achieved through a composite treatment c

A non-inferiority trial comparing manual and automated high-level disinfection for reprocessing of transabdominal and transvaginal ultrasound probes.

Manual chemical methods are commonly used for ultrasound probe disinfection but are known to be operator dependent and subject to variability. Automated ultraviolet-C (UV-C) light-emitting diode (LED) disinfection represents a chemical and mercury free alternative, however, clinical evidence comparing UV-C LED to conventional disinfectants for high-level disinfection of ultrasound probes remains limited. In this single-centre non-inferiority study conducted in the departments of gynaecology, obstetrics and urology of a Belgian university hospital, automated UV-C LED disinfection was compared t

Methylmercury and Total Mercury Content on Usnea Lichens in Nova Scotia: Assessing Mercury Stability with Controlled Irradiation and Temperature Change.

Research on mercury distribution is critical as methylmercury can bioaccumulate and biomagnify within food webs. Lichens and other vegetation have been used to monitor heavy metals in the atmosphere as an alternative to commercially available passive-adsorbing collectors. We present results from controlled lab experiments quantifying the stability of mercury on Usnea lichens and the total mercury and methylmercury content of 105 Usnea lichens collected across Nova Scotia, Canada. We discovered that mercury forms a stable association with Usnea lichens and minimal amounts were released (0.003 a

Sperm-Associated Mercury Species Levels Determine Its Impairment: Evidence from Paired Analyses of Whole Semen and Seminal Plasma.

There have been conflicting results regarding the relationship between mercury (Hg) and semen quality among previous studies, partly because most studies rely on indirect reproductive biomarkers (e.g., whole blood, hair) and no study tested Hg species to understand their specific associations with semen quality. In this study, we collected paired whole semen and seminal plasma samples from 250 male participants aged 26-63 years old in Hong Kong. Total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) levels were quantified in both matrices, and inorganic mercury (iHg) level was calculated based on the di

Rational design of interfacial sp C─S─Zn hybridization in ZnS/graphdiyne for mercury vapor capture.

Capturing gaseous mercury (Hg0) from complex flue gases remains a common yet persistent issue. Here, the one-step hydrothermal method is adopted to synthesize zinc sulfide/graphdiyne (ZnS/GDY) nano adsorbents for efficient Hg vapor capture via a rational design of sp C─S─Zn hybridization on the interface. The research results indicate that GDY can gain electrons from ZnS though sp C─S─Zn bonds, which facilitates charge transfer and induces the generation of highly active Hg adsorption sites near sulfur defects (Sv). The fabricated ZnS/GDY adsorbent can achieve a Hg0 removal efficiency of 98% a
