Inflammatory Biomarkers (IL-6, IL-10, IL-17, TNF-α) in TB patients attending a tertiary care hospital in Bhubaneswar, Odisha : a cross - sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis exhibits a complicated immune-pathogenesis that involves pro-inflammatory cytokines which modulate the host's immune responses. Cytokines like IL-6, IL-10, IL-17 and TNF-α are crucial in managing inflammation, immune protection and the progression of the disease that affect diagnostic and treatment responses. AIM: In this study, the levels of cytokines IL-6, IL-10, IL-17 and TNF-α in the serum samples of pulmonary TB patients were estimated and their diagnostic significance was assessed and correlated with socio-demographic profile. METHODS: Sera samples were collect

Development and Internal Validation of a Clinical-Epidemiological Model for Active Pulmonary Tuberculosis Among Patients Already Evaluated for Suspected Disease in a Low-Incidence Hospital.

BACKGROUND: In low-incidence hospital settings, airborne isolation capacity is limited. We developed a clinical-epidemiological model to estimate active pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) probability among adults already selected for PTB evaluation, using information available before definitive diagnostic testing. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed consecutive adults who underwent microbiological testing for suspected PTB and were managed with airborne precautions at a university hospital in Rome from January 2016 through December 2021 (n=682 complete cases). A LASSO-penalized logistic regression

A hypothesis-generating study of collateral reactivation: a reanalysis of Mycobacterium tuberculosis genomes from 119 recurrent tuberculosis cases.

Recurrent tuberculosis is traditionally classified as exogenous reinfection or endogenous reactivation. We previously proposed "collateral reactivation," in which distinct Mycobacterium tuberculosis subclones derived from a hypothetical original clone are involved in separate disease episodes, in contrast to traditional endogenous ("direct-descent") reactivation. To explore whether collateral reactivation occurs beyond the single case we previously reported, we reanalyzed publicly available whole-genome sequencing data from 123 recurrent tuberculosis cases. After curation, 119 cases (pairwise

Carcinomatous meningitis: Current insights into diagnosis, prognosis and management.

Carcinomatous meningitis, or leptomeningeal metastasis, is a severe neurological complication of solid and haematological malignancies caused by dissemination of tumour cells within the leptomeninges and cerebrospinal fluid pathways. Clinical presentation is heterogeneous, including headache, intracranial hypertension, cranial nerve palsies or radiculopathy, which frequently leads to diagnostic delay. Diagnosis relies on converging clinical, radiological, and cerebrospinal fluid findings, with gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging of the brain and spine and cerebrospinal fluid cytolog

A latent genetic factor underlies multiple component phenotypes of cerebral small vessel disease.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral small vessel disease (cSVD) encompasses white matter hyperintensities (WMH), enlarged perivascular spaces (PVS), intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), small vessel stroke (SVS), and cognitive impairment-phenotypes that frequently co-occur yet have been studied as independent genetic endpoints. Whether a shared genetic architecture underlies these co-occurring cSVD-related phenotypes remains unclear. METHODS: We applied Genomic SEM to GWAS summary statistics from six phenotypes (WMH, PVS, ICH, SVS, cognitive performance, systolic blood pressure), followed by multivariate associa

Post-hemorrhagic ventricular dilatation and hydrocephalus in preterm infants: a five-year retrospective cohort study from a tertiary referral center.

BACKGROUND: Post-hemorrhagic hydrocephalus (PHH) is a serious complication of intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) in preterm infants and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Although neonatal risk factors are well described, the contribution of maternal and perinatal factors remains inconsistent across studies. OBJECTIVE: To determine the incidence, clinical characteristics, and independent predictors of PHH among preterm neonates with IVH, and to evaluate early outcomes in a tertiary referral center. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included preterm neonates (< 34 wee

Preliminary study on expression and functions of Toxoplasma gondii SRS67 and SRS20A proteins.

BACKGROUND: Toxoplasma gondii surface proteins play critical roles in parasite invasion, proliferation, and host immune modulation, and represent promising targets for anti-toxoplasmosis intervention. SRS67 and SRS20A are poorly characterized surface proteins of T. gondii, and their biological functions and host regulatory effects remain largely unclear. METHODS: In the present study, we prepared recombinant SRS67 and SRS20A proteins and generated corresponding polyclonal antibodies to explore their functional characteristics and protective potentials. RESULTS: Immunofluorescence analysis lo

Refractions of tuberculosis and migration in the northern suburb of Paris: Exposure, adherence, and semantic recalcitrance.

France is overall a low endemic country for tuberculosis (TB); however, Seine-Saint-Denis-the poorest department of metropolitan France-has the highest incidence rate in the whole country, excluding overseas territories. At the national level, TB mainly concerns people coming from a country with a high endemicity of TB, people in conditions of absolute poverty, and people living in prison facilities. In this north-eastern Parisian suburb, we conducted qualitative research through a multi-sited ethnography in six university hospitals of the Assistance Publique - Hôpitaux de Paris (AP-HP), two i

Prevalence and determinants of metabolic abnormalities among adult tuberculosis patients at Gondar Town, Northwest Ethiopia: an institution-based comparative cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Metabolic abnormalities, such as diabetes mellitus, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and central obesity, are significant contributors to the global burden of non-communicable diseases. Tuberculosis (TB) patients may be at increased risk of these conditions due to chronic inflammation, nutritional depletion, and anti-TB drug effects; however, locally grounded comparative evidence from resource-limited settings such as northwest Ethiopia remains scarce. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and determinants of metabolic abnormalities among TB patients in Gondar Town, Ethiopia. METHO

Quantitative assessment of high-pressure processing inactivation of foodborne bacteria and viruses in foods.

High-pressure processing (HPP) is a non-thermal food processing technology that can inactivate microbiological hazards while preserving product quality. This study compiled 2692 D-values across 15 microbial hazards pressurized at different pressures at a temperature ≤ 45 °C. The Bigelow model was used to estimate Dref values at Pref of 500 MPa. Based on these values, microbial hazards were grouped into three HPP resistance categories across all food matrices: 1) Sensitive (D500MPa ≤ 1 min): Vibrio spp., Aeromonas caviae, Campylobacter spp., Rotavirus, Cronobacter spp., Hepatitis A virus, Norov

Intradural extramedullary venous hemangioma mimicking meningioma: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Intradural extramedullary hemangiomas of the spinal canal are rare, and the venous subtype is particularly uncommon. Their imaging appearance can overlap with more frequent intradural extramedullary tumors, which increases the risk of misdiagnosis. This case report aims to describe an intradural extramedullary venous hemangioma that mimicked meningioma on MRI and to highlight key surgical considerations. CASE PRESENTATION: A 49-year-old man presented with a five-month history of progressive numbness, radicular pain, and weakness in the left lower limb, which progressed to gait dis
