Preparation of a Novel Zirconium-Loaded Flocculant for Efficient Removal of Phosphorus.

Polysilicate-ferric-aluminum-zirconium (PSFAZ) was prepared using co-polymerization for the treatment of phosphorus wastewater. The preparation conditions of PSFAZ were optimized through a series of single-factor experiments, including Zr/Fe molar ratio, pH, sedimentation time, and dosage. The results demonstrated that PSFAZ exhibited an excellent phosphorus removal performance with 99.3% removal efficiency under the conditions of Zr/Fe ratio of 0.6/1, pH of 6, dosage of 25 mL/L and sedimentation time of 2 h. In real wastewater treatment, PSFAZ exhibited an exceptional phosphorus removal effic

Physical-Chemical and Microbiological Characterisation of Blueberry By-Products (Vaccinium myrtillus L.) as Potential Food Ingredients.

The production of blueberry juice generates large quantities of waste products such as skins, pulp and seeds. These by-products contain high levels of bioactive compounds and are suitable for use as functional ingredients in food systems. In this study three powdered products obtained from blueberry pomace-with skins and seeds, seedless, and with seeds-have been physically-chemically and microbiologically characterised as being the individual anthocyanins and phenolic compounds identified by HPLC-QTOF. Furthermore, to ensure product safety, the effect of a heat treatment at 90 °C for 30, 60, 9

Effects of Different Selenium Concentrations on Agronomic Traits, Antioxidant Defense, and Leaf Metabolome in Blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L. 'Brigitta').

Selenium (Se) is an important micronutrient that is required in very small amounts and plays a significant role in enhancing plant growth, stress resistance, and fruit quality. In this study, we investigated the effects of different sodium selenite concentrations (CK, 0 mg/L; Se1, 0.50 mg/L; Se2, 1.00 mg/L, Se3, 2.00; and Se4, 3.00 mg/L) on the growth, nutrient absorption, antioxidant capacity, and leaf metabolome of blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L. 'Brigitta') in hydroponic culture. Our results showed that moderate Se concentration (1.00 mg/L, Se2) had noticeable enhancements in key traits

Grafting Modulates Bottle Gourd Flavor via WRKY23-GS1 and PHR1-ALMT8 Pathways.

Grafting in Cucurbitaceae is known to enhance agronomical traits; however, its impact on the underlying fruit flavor quality remains elusive. This study elucidates the biochemical and molecular mechanisms by which pumpkin rootstock alters the content of flavor-related compounds in bottle gourd fruit, conferring Fusarium wilt resistance and increased yield. Sensory-related metabolites were significantly impacted: grafted fruits exhibited increased glutamate content and elevated accumulation of malic and oxalic acids. Mechanistically, grafting induced the LsWRKY23 expression to directly activate

Structure-dependent inhibition of human carboxylesterase 1 by organophosphate esters: integrated in vitro profiling and 3D-QSAR interpretation.

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are widespread environmental contaminants increasingly recognized for their metabolic-disruption potential. However, systematic cross-structure comparisons of their inhibitory effects on human carboxylesterase 1 (hCES1), an enzyme involved in xenobiotic metabolism and lipid homeostasis, remain limited. Here, we established an OPE-centered cross-structure inhibition dataset for hCES1 using 25 structurally diverse organophosphate compounds, revealing a pronounced structure-dependent potency pattern across the series (IC50: 2.538 nM to > 600 μM). More potent inhibiti

Whole-genome sequencing and functional validation of the plant growth-promoting Bacillus velezensis DO23 isolated in Vietnam.

Plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) represent a sustainable alternative to chemical fertilisers and pesticides; however, their agricultural application requires rigorous evaluation of both functional efficacy and biosafety. In this study, we conducted an integrated genomic and phenotypic characterisation of Bacillus velezensis DO23, a rhizosphere-derived strain isolated from chilli pepper (Capsicum annuum L.)-cultivated soils in Vietnam, to assess its potential as a plant growth-promoting inoculant. Whole-genome sequencing revealed a 3.99 Mb draft genome with a GC content of 46.1% and confi

Linking land use, pesticide pollution, and bacterioplankton responses to enhance small stream resilience.

Pesticides remain a major threat to freshwater ecosystems, yet monitoring data, particularly linking catchment land use with rivers pollution and ecological impacts, are still limited. This study assessed pesticide contamination and the mitigating role of forested riparian zones in four Central Poland catchments dominated by mixed agriculture and apple orchard production. Over a 14-month period, 20 pesticide compounds were detected in 85% of samples with an average total concentration of 367.2 ng/L, and a maximum of 3088.5 ng/L. The herbicide 2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid (MCPA) was the

Occurrence and Spatial Distribution of Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria and Antibiotic Resistance Genes in Surface and Groundwater of the Kelani River Basin, Sri Lanka.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in aquatic environments represents a critical global public health threat, yet comprehensive environmental surveillance data remain scarce in low- and middle-income countries. The Kelani River Basin, supplying approximately 80% of Colombo's potable water and Sri Lanka's most industrially impacted waterway, lacks a basin-wide characterization of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) across spatial and seasonal gradients. This study provides the first comprehensive basin-wide assessment of ARB distribution, ARG occurrence, minim

Stereoselective Synthesis of Glycosyl Phosphonates from Saccharides Via Selenium-Catalyzed Dehydrogenations.

Glycosyl diphenylphosphonates are a type of glycosyl donor featuring a phosphorus-containing leaving group at the anomeric carbon, and their coupling reaction has been extensively studied in oligosaccharide synthesis. Herein, we have developed an efficient and green synthetic method for the direct dehydrogenative coupling of glucose derivatives with secondary phosphine oxides under ambient air, using a catalytic amount of diaryl diselenide. This method eliminates the need for glycosyl chlorides and phosphorochloridates, as well as preactivated reagents such as N-methylimidazole. Water is gener

Valorisation of seafood wastewater using halotolerant purple bacteria with high antioxidant content as aquafeed.

The rapid expansion of aquaculture has intensified the demand for fishmeal and fish oil, increasing pressure on marine ecosystems and generating large volumes of saline wastewater. Halotolerant purple phototrophic bacteria (PPB) offer a dual solution by enabling resource recovery from seafood processing effluents while producing high-value compounds for potential aquafeed applications. In this study, a mixed PPB culture was enriched from estuarine sediments and operated in a photobioreactor under saline conditions (30 g NaCl L⁻1), achieving removal efficiencies up to 75.5% and 82.3% for nitrog

Soil microbial functional recovery and community resilience driven by biogenic magnetite nanoparticles under carbendazim stress.

The persistence of fungicides in agricultural soils poses a major threat to soil health, as these compounds disrupt microbial communities and compromise key ecosystem functions. Carbendazim, a commonly used systemic fungicide, is known for its ability to inhibit microbial activity and nutrient cycling. This study assessed the capacity of biogenic magnetite nanoparticles to mitigate carbendazim-induced disturbance and facilitate the recovery of soil microbial function. Citrate-stabilized magnetite nanoparticles were applied to an agricultural Andisol intentionally contaminated with carbendazim
