Sustainable hydrogen and vivianite recovery from waste activated sludge in electro-fermentation: Perspectives of product regulation and microbial interaction.

Zero-valent iron mediated electro-fermentation (EF) has recently emerged as a promising strategy for the synchronous hydrogen and vivianite recovery from waste activated sludge (WAS), while the mechanism of production regulation and microbial interaction still remains unclear. In this study, a comprehensive analysis of hydrogen and phosphorus recovery from prefermented sludge via EF was performed. The substrate reduction (∼2500 mg COD/L, fermentation liquid was diluted 1:1) resulted in the highest hydrogen yield (25.5 mmol/g COD) and complete phosphate recovery at 2 d, the recovered vivianite

The interaction between litter input and soil microbial community regulates the intraspecific allelopathic effects of Solanum rostratum Dunal.

INTRODUCTION: The "novel weapon hypothesis" posits that invasive plants suppress native species by releasing allelochemicals, which is a crucial factor for their successful invasion. While most studies focus on interspecific allelopathy, with insufficient attention paid to intraspecific allelopathy. METHODS: This study employed an in pot experiment with different litter concentrations (0, 5, 10, 20 g/kg) to cultivate Solanum rostratum Dunal seedlings in both sterilized and unsterilized soils. The plant growth parameters, soil physicochemical properties, soil metabolites, and soil microbial co

Effects of Alkaline Roasting and Reduction Treatment on Gangue Removal from Iron Ore Using a Flow-Type Reactor.

The declining quality of global iron ore resources, marked by increasing concentrations of silicon (Si), aluminum (Al), and phosphorus (P), presents significant challenges to the steelmaking industry. The present study investigated the integration of alkaline roasting, a reduction treatment, and alkaline hydrothermal processing as a means of removing gangue components from low-grade iron ore, using a flow-type reactor system. Experiments were conducted using an Ore B specimen containing 67.9% Fe, 1.6% Si, 1.2% Al, and 0.17% P (mass fraction). The goal was to optimize the processing conditions

Coordinating ability and versatility of organosulfur-based ligands in transition metal catalyzed hydrogenative and hydrogen auto-transfer processes.

Transition metal complexes with sulfur-donor ligands serve as efficient catalysts in numerous homogeneous reactions, owing to the coordination diversity of sulfur-based ligands and the possibility to obtain chiral and achiral complexes. Historically dominated by phosphorus and nitrogen, transition metal compounds with electron-rich sulfur-donor ligands have recently attracted research interest because of their close connection with enzymatic transformation. This review presents a comprehensive overview of recent applications of sulfur-ligated metal complexes in hydrogenative and strictly relat

A mechanochemical construction of C-P bonds through radical-radical coupling.

Aryl phosphorus compounds are indispensable motifs in organic synthesis, medicinal, and materials chemistry. Herein, we report a robust magnesium-mediated mechanochemical protocol for the room-temperature synthesis of aryl phosphine oxides through direct C-P bond formation. The reaction employs phosphoryl chlorides with aryl or alkyl halides under solvent-minimized milling conditions, providing a broad range of products in moderate to high yields. Preliminary mechanistic investigations suggest that the transformation proceeds through a radical-radical cross-coupling pathway.

Janus-faced coordination chemistry of pyridyl-functionalized phosphinines with Cu(I) and Au(I).

The novel 2,6-trimethylsilyl-3,5-(2'-pyridyl)phosphinine has been synthesized and its coordination chemistry with Cu(I) and Au(I) was investigated. Selective binding through either the phosphorus atom or the pendant pyridyl groups was achieved, yielding monomeric, dimeric, and polymeric complexes. The use of copper halides produced rather structurally diverse coordination compounds, with architectures dependent on the type of halide, copper loading, and solvent, whereas Au(I) exclusively formed monomeric species. Quaternization of the ligand with alkylating agents suppressed N-coordination, en

Synthesis of hybrid phosphinoferrocene ligands bearing amine pendants and catalytic evaluation of their gold(I) complexes.

A series of hybrid, ferrocene-based phosphines bearing additional amine substituents have been synthesized and evaluated in gold catalysis. The series includes 1,1'- and 1,2-disubstituted phosphinoferrocene donors with cyclic or acyclic amine groups (morpholine, thiomorpholine, and dimethylamine) and various substituents on the phosphorus atom (phenyl, cyclohexyl, and 2-furyl). The compounds were prepared using two complementary routes: (1) alkylation of a sulfide-protected phosphine-amine intermediate and (2) copper-catalyzed electrophilic amination followed by a lithiation/phosphinylation st

Short-term modulation of mineral phosphorus fractions by functionalized biochars in different alkaline soil types.

There remains a gap of knowledge regarding the functionalization of modified biochar types to enhance phosphorus (P) availability in arid soils. Therefore, original biochar (OB) derived from pyrolyzed Dodonaea viscosa feedstock at 500 °C was functionalized using ball milling (BMB), chemical oxidation (CHB), and biological activation (BIOB) to study their short-term effect on mineral P dynamics in charosphere of different soil types. Elemental and XRD analyses of OB and BIOB pointed to considerable amounts of P (0.95 and 0.71%) with a presence of P-containing minerals. EDS spectra of BIOB-amend

Divergent Biochemical Strategies and Organ-Specific Metabolic Adjustments in Spinach Mediated by Exogenous Amino Acids Under Salt Stress.

Understanding the physiological and biochemical responses of spinach to salt stress through amino acid supplementation is crucial for improving crop resilience under increasing soil salinity conditions. Salt stress represents one of the most severe abiotic constraints limiting vegetable crop productivity worldwide, yet comprehensive studies examining organ-specific metabolic reprogramming across entire plant systems remain limited. However, knowledge about how different amino acids mediate these responses through distinct metabolic pathways is limited. We investigated mineral nutrition, antiox

Palladium Catalyzed Asymmetric C(sp)-P Cross-Coupling via Kinetic Resolution of Secondary Phosphine Oxides.

Herein, we report a palladium-catalyzed asymmetric C(sp)-P cross-coupling reaction between secondary phosphine oxides (SPOs) and alkynyl chlorides, providing a direct and efficient route to access P-stereogenic alkynyl phosphine oxides via a kinetic resolution process. This method proceeds under mild conditions, delivering products with excellent enantioselectivity (up to 94% ee) and good functional group tolerance. This work offers a straightforward and modular strategy for the synthesis of valuable chiral alkynyl phosphorus compounds.

Synthesis and Isolation of α-Diazophosphonium Ylides.

Well-controlled generation and utilization of phosphorus-ylide-stabilized diazo compounds remain largely unexplored, despite their potential applications. Here, we report a general strategy that transforms Bestmann ylide derivatives into α-diazophosphonium ylide, triazole, or thiadiazole derivatives via reactions with organo-azides, enabling the first isolation of α-diazophosphonium ylide, species that combines the properties of classical ylides with diazo functionality. Its reactivity was examined with diverse E-H bonds across the p-block elements. DFT studies elucidate the factors governing

Laser-Assisted Processing and Modification of Bioactive Glasses: A Review.

Bioactive glasses and lasers have followed a relatively similar path. Lasers and bioactive glasses began their journey in the second half of last century. It was in 1960 when Dr. Theodore H. Maiman constructed the first laser and fascinated the world with that marvellous ray. It was in 1967 when a young associate professor, Larry L. Hench, was addressed by a colonel returned from Vietnam, that asked him about developing a material that could help his soldiers recover from severe bone injuries. Two years later, the first bioactive material, the Bioglass, was launched. From there, the developmen

Bioglass nanofibers in a 3D scaffold orchestrate robust bone regeneration via enhanced osteogenesis and mineralization.

The main aim of the present study is to fabricate a 3D scaffold loaded with bioglass nanofibers to orchestrate robust bone regeneration via enhanced osteogenesis and mineralization. We applied a sol-gel method to fabricate the bioglass nanofibers and incorporated them into 3-D hydrogel (1%, 5%, and 10% wt.%). The fabricated scaffolds were characterized to determine their morphology, surface functional groups, porosity, swelling capacity, biodegradation profile, cytocompatibility, and hemocompatibility. Finally, the scaffolds were implanted in critical-size bone-defect models in the rabbit calv

Field-derived phosphorus accumulation rates and solid phase speciation in the filter medium of an urban bioretention system.

Bioretention cells are a popular type of green stormwater management infrastructure. In urban catchments, they reduce the 'flashiness' and volume of surface flow resulting from storms by promoting storage, groundwater infiltration, and evapotranspiration. Although they can also remove pollutants from stormwater runoff, their effectiveness in reducing phosphorus (P) loads is highly variable, in part because of the complex biogeochemical cycling of P in bioretention cell systems. Using time series solid-phase P concentrations measured over a 9-year period on the filter medium from a multi-cell b

Cryo-EM structures of Oryza sativa MRP5 reveal a phytate accumulation mechanism in plant vacuoles.

Phytate (phytic acid, or InsP6), the primary phosphorus storage compound in plants, plays essential roles in nutrient homeostasis and cellular signaling. However, its strong metal-chelating properties make cytosolic accumulation cytotoxic, necessitating its sequestration into vacuoles for safe storage. Here, we present the cryo-EM structures of the rice vacuolar phytate transporter, OsMRP5, captured in distinct functional states. These structures reveal the molecular basis of OsMRP5 function as an ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter. OsMRP5 employs a specialized substrate-recognition mechan
