Spatially Refined Analysis of Emission Burdens and Equity from Light-, Medium-, and Heavy-Duty Vehicle Traffic in the United States.

We estimate block-level emission intensities of nitrogen oxides (NOX) and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) from on-road vehicle traffic for every census block in the United States, combining MOVES-based emission factors with street level traffic data. We use this spatially refined, computationally efficient, and policy-sensitive metric to evaluate emissions burden. Despite comprising less than 11% of vehicle kilometers traveled, we find that medium- and heavy-duty trucks account for 46% of NOX and 50% of PM2.5 emission burden nationally ─ with PM2.5 burden from trucks dominated by exhaust emiss

Metal-Induced Localized Microcrystals Buffer Poisoning in NOx Catalytic Reduction.

Metal impurities in flue gas severely threaten the service life of NOx abatement catalysts. While traditional acid-base interaction strategies rely on sacrificial sites, such passive defense mechanisms merely mitigate activity loss rather than fundamentally resolving poisoning. This study establishes an active defense mechanism by fabricating amorphous high-entropy metal oxides capable of sequestering metal poisons by inducing localized microcrystallization. These resulting microcrystals are subsequently transformed into extra active centers for NOx reduction. Systematic investigation reveals

Alkyl Chain-Functionalized Nitronyl Nitroxide Radicals: Structure-Microenvironment Effects on Thiol Kinetics and Dual Antioxidant Behavior.

Radical reactivity can be modulated through structural and microenvironmental control, thereby representing an important challenge in the design of redox-active systems. In this study, an alkyl chain-functionalized series of nitronyl nitroxide (NN) radicals designed and synthesized by varying their amphiphilic character. Subsequently, their thiol-based reactivity and microenvironment accessibility, along with antioxidant profile, were investigated. Radical behavior was monitored in aqueous media and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) micelles. Accessibility properties and micellar partitioning of al

Mechanism-Constrained Learning for Regime-Aware Urban Ozone Prediction and Interpretation.

Accurately characterizing source-related and precursor factors associated with surface ozone (O3) pollution remains a central challenge for air quality management. Data-driven models can achieve strong predictive performance, but mechanistically consistent interpretation remains challenging. Here we develop a mechanism-constrained diagnostic framework (MCDF) integrating observations, source-related factors of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) resolved by positive matrix factorization, and scenario-specific constraints from the empirical kinetic modeling approach (EKMA). Its core mechanism-cons

Renoxification via Reduction of Inorganic Nitrate by Photoacids in Aerosols.

Particulate nitrate (pNO3-) present in biomass burning aerosols has been found to efficiently release reactive nitrogen oxides (NOy) in a process called renoxification. Despite the importance this process has in promoting ozone formation in the lower atmosphere, mechanisms responsible for highly efficient renoxification from pNO3- are not well understood. Herein, we show that renoxification from pNO3- is enhanced in the presence of catechol and related phenols, which act as strong reductants that directly reduce NO3- to HONO and NO when they absorb UV-visible light. Aerosol chamber studies usi

Nitration of Urban PM2.5: A Hidden Driver of Enhanced Human Inflammation.

Nitrogen oxides (NOx) are well-established air pollutants that have been epidemiologically linked to adverse outcomes. However, their complex chemical reactivity obscures the mechanisms through which specific nitrogenous species are responsible for observed health risks. We hypothesize that NOx-driven nitration processes generate nitrated aromatic compounds (NACs) as potential health threat contributors. To test this, we performed a longitudinal, population-based exposomic study in Beijing. ∼1000 NACs were characterized from personal PM2.5, with median concentrations higher than those of tradi

Comparison of Chemical Transport Model and Observation Derived Ozone-NO x ‑VOC Isopleths for the South Coast Air Basin of California.

We developed, applied, evaluated, and compared chemical transport model-based and observation-based methods for constructing ozone isopleths used to understand ozone-emission relationships, focusing on the South Coast Air Basin of California (SoCAB). The High-order Decoupled Direct Method (HDDM) embedded in the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model was applied under different emission levels to map out the sensitivities of ozone levels to anthropogenic emissions of nitrogen oxides (NO x ) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Ozone concentrations and sensitivities to emissions simulat

A Review on the Recent Developments and Perspectives of Copper-Based Nanoparticles for the Electrochemical Reduction of NOx and COx.

Anthropogenic emissions of carbon oxides (COx) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) arising from industrial activities contribute to environmental and health problems, motivating the development of effective strategies for their mitigation and valorization. Among the available approaches, electrochemical reduction offers the additional possibility of converting COx and NOx species into value-added products that may serve as chemical feedstocks or energy carriers, thereby contributing to carbon and nitrogen resource recovery. However, the practical development of these processes requires catalysts with hi

Emerging investigator series: spatially and temporally resolved lightning NOx production rates obtained with space-based lightning detectors.

Lightning is a dominant free tropospheric source of nitrogen oxides (NOx), impacting climate by affecting global tropospheric ozone (O3) and other key oxidants. We calculate temporally and spatially resolved lightning NOx (LNOx) production rates using lightning flash energies from space-based Lightning Imaging Sensors (LIS). Our production rates average ∼309 moles per flash (mol fl-1) over oceans, peaking at midday, and ∼172 mol fl-1 over land, peaking in the early morning. Replacing static values in the original GEOS-Chem model inventory with our spatially and hourly varying production rates

Long-term ambient air pollution is not associated with circulating soluble urokinase plasminogen activator receptor.

BACKGROUND: Soluble urokinase plasminogen activator receptor (suPAR) is a stable chronic-inflammation biomarker causally implicated in atherosclerosis, yet its modifiable determinants remain largely uncharacterized. Long-term ambient air pollution is an established cardiovascular risk factor and a biologically plausible determinant of suPAR. METHODS: In this cross-sectional analysis, we tested associations of long-term residential air pollution with circulating suPAR in 5,072 participants of the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis, drawn from six US metropolitan regions and enrolled during

Research advances on preparation of monolithic catalysts and catalytic purification of atmospheric pollutants.

With the rapid development of science and technology, atmospheric pollutants have become an increasingly urgent problem. Pollutants not only cause serious harm to the atmospheric environment but also pose significant risks to human health. Catalytic purification technology is currently one of the most effective ways to control atmospheric pollution, and the design and development of highly efficient catalysts have become a major research focus. Studies have shown that traditional powder catalysts suffer from several limitations including high pressure drop, catalyst loss, poor recyclability, a

The overlooked changes: health co-benefits from the reduction of ambient carbon monoxide in China.

Previous studies have primarily emphasized the emission reduction benefits of particulate matter and nitrogen oxides, while largely overlooking the substantial long-term decline in ambient carbon monoxide (CO) concentrations. This paper systematically evaluated the spatiotemporal trends, driving factors, and associated health co-benefits of ambient CO reductions across 337 Chinese cities during 2015-2023. Owing to the stringent CO concentration limits established in China's Ambient Air Quality Standard (GB 3095-2012), which are among the most rigorous worldwide, nationwide ambient CO concentra

High levels of ClNO2 enhance wintertime atmospheric oxidation capacity at a coastal site in North China.

Nitryl chloride (ClNO2) is a reservoir for chlorine radicals and NOx, and thereby plays a potentially important role in atmospheric oxidation chemistry and the formation of secondary air pollutants. Despite a growing number of observations and modeling studies of ClNO2, knowledge on its atmospheric abundance and impact under diverse environmental conditions remains incomplete. In this study, we investigated the sources and impacts of ClNO2 during winter 2022 at a suburban-coastal site in North China. The 1-minute average mixing ratio in the field campaign period was 404.5 ± 502.9 pptv, which i

Exhaust Emission Characteristics of Gasoline Engines with Secondary Air Systems and Electrically Heated Catalysts in Cold-Start WLTC Mode.

Cold-start emissions remain a critical barrier to achieving near-zero tailpipe emissions required by increasingly stringent global regulations. Because gasoline direct-injection (GDI) engines experience incomplete combustion and delayed catalyst activation during the cold phase, effective thermal management of the after-treatment system is essential. This study evaluates the cold-start emission reduction potential of a 1.6-liter gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine equipped with a warm-up catalytic converter (WCC), underfloor catalytic converter (UCC), electrically heated catalyst (EHC), and

Identification of shared and divergent molecular pathways linking ambient air pollutants to mortality and major chronic diseases through proteomic profiling.

Ambient air pollutants have been associated with increased risks of mortality and chronic diseases; however, population-based evidence on their shared versus pollutant- and outcome-specific molecular mechanisms remains unclear. Leveraging proteomics data from 48,645 participants in the UK Biobank, we characterized proteomic signatures related to overall and individual air pollutants, including particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx), and examined their associations with risks of mortality and major chronic diseases. Subsequently, we investigated po

Evaluating Graph-Centrality Context for Station-Level Correction of CAMS Air Quality Reanalysis in Lombardy from 2018 to 2021.

Monitoring air quality is critical for understanding pollution impacts on public health. The Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) provides estimates of nitrogen oxides (NOx), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and inhalable coarse particles (PM10), but its spatial resolution may limit accuracy at individual urban stations. This study introduces a graph centrality-based framework for station-level correction of CAMS European reanalysis data using in situ observations from ARPA Lombardia (2018 to 2021). Stations are modelled as nodes in a multiplex graph, with spa

Coumarin 153 Fluorescent Probe for Highly Sensitive and Selective Detection of 2-Nitrodiphenylamine.

During propellant storage, the release of nitrogen oxides consumes the stabilizer 2-nitrodiphenylamine (2-NDPA), whose residual content serves as a key indicator for assessing ammunition aging and safe service life. Conventional detection methods, predominantly based on chromatography, are hindered by high costs, complex operation, and unsuitability for on-site analysis. Herein, we report a rapid detection method using coumarin 153 (C153) as a single fluorescent signal unit. Experimental results show that the fluorescence intensity of C153 at 527 nm decreases linearly upon addition of 2-NDPA,

Nickel-Substituted Rubredoxin Undergoes Demetallation Upon Reaction With Nitric Oxide and Nitroxyl.

Nitric oxide (NO) and nitroxyl (HNO) are closely related reactive nitrogen species with distinct biological functions, yet differentiating their chemistry remains challenging because of their high reactivity and overlapping reaction pathways. Developing simple protein-based platforms to study their reactivity is therefore of considerable interest. Rubredoxins are small, stable iron-thiolate proteins widely used as model systems for investigating metal-thiolate coordination and electron transfer. Here, we investigated the reactivity of native iron-rubredoxin (Fe-Rd) and its nickel-substituted a

Syzygium aromaticum leaf extract promoted biogenic CuO nanoparticles for the anti-apoptotic efficacies of NCI-H661 human lung adenocarcinoma cell line and following the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway.

BACKGROUND: A lower rate of permanent pacemaker (PPM) has been linked to a target aortic implantation height (AIH) >0.70, following transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) with the SAPIEN 3 valve. Based on clinical experience, it was hypothesized that a higher AIH (≥0.85) would lower the rate of PPM implantation. METHODS: A total of 127 patients (66 females, 61 males; mean age 82 ± 8 years) underwent TAVR with the SAPIEN 3 valve between May 2015 and July 2016. AIH was defined as the proportion of the valve frame above the aortic annulus in the post-deployment aortogram. A target AIH (≥0
