Titanium Oxide Thin Films With Metal Nanodisks as Plasmonic Metamaterial Photocatalyst Sheets for IPA-Assisted CO2 Reduction.

Plasmonic metals are considered a promising approach for enhancing the reactivity of solar-driven photocatalysts when used as co-catalytic nanostructures. However, optimizing the energy conversion efficiency is challenging because it requires precise control of the light-matter interactions at the nanoscale. In this work, we present metamaterial photocatalyst sheets that combine titanium dioxide (TiO2) thin films and plasmonic metal nanodisks arranged in periodic arrays. Silver (Ag), gold (Au), platinum (Pt), and palladium (Pd) were used as nanodisk metals. We tested our photocatalyst sheets f

Au on in2O3-x/TiO2(110): A Highly Active and Selective Catalyst for the Conversion of CO2 to Methanol.

Methanol production by carbon dioxide hydrogenation is a promising route for supplying industrial fuel demands, but achieving high methanol selectivity remains challenging due to competing favorable reactions. Here, we investigate model Au/In2O3-x/TiO2(110) catalysts to elucidate the roles of metal-oxide and oxide-oxide interactions in CO2 conversion. Using a combination of ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (AP-XPS), temperature-programmed desorption (TPD), and catalytic measurements, we show that small coverages of Au (<0.15 monolayer) dispersed on In2O3-x/TiO2(110) significan

A single archaeon couples long-chain fatty acid oxidation to methanogenesis.

Anaerobic degradation of complex organic compounds to methane and carbon dioxide is common in the deep subsurface biosphere and has long been considered to require syntrophic cooperation, with methanogens confined to the terminal use of simple C1 and C2 substrates. Thermodynamic considerations, multi-omics analyses and microcosm experiments suggest that archaeal lineages are capable of methanogenic degradation of complex substrates1-6. However, experimental validation in pure culture was lacking. Here we report the isolation of a thermophilic archaeon, Methanoglobus dolicholipophagus AA-75, af

Coupled Electrolysis for Energy Efficient CO2 Reduction to Formic Acid Enabled by Reconstruction of Indium-Based Catalysts.

Electrochemical CO2 reduction to formate represents a promising avenue for closing the anthropogenic carbon cycle, yet the structural reconstruction of selective indium-based catalysts under operating conditions poses challenges for identifying active sites and elucidating reaction mechanisms. Here, we demonstrate that modulating the oxygen vacancies (OV) concentration in In2O3 enables precise control over the reconstruction pathway, yielding metallic In with tunable grain boundary (GB). An optimal OV concentration directs the formation of a GB-rich In catalyst (In-GB) that delivers a formate

Identification, functional characterization of a novel flavohemoglobin from Ensifer adhaerens and its application to enhancing vitamin B12 production.

BACKGROUND: Bacterial flavohemoglobins are well-characterized as versatile proteins that significantly augment the biosynthesis yields of diverse value-added compounds in engineered microbial platforms. Our previous studies revealed marked upregulation of a flavohemoglobin-encoding gene in Ensifer adhaerens under oxygen-limiting conditions, with potential associations to vitamin B12 production. RESULTS: In this study, a novel flavohemoglobin (FHP, encoded by b12fla gene) from Ensifer adhaerens were characterized. FHP exhibited high sequence and structural similarity to HMP (the flavohaemoglob

Feedstock-dependent biochar properties shape short-term soil CO2 emissions through microbial enzyme-associated processes beyond the effect of soil pH in black soil.

Black soils represent globally important reservoirs of soil organic carbon (SOC), yet the mechanisms regulating short-term carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions following biochar amendment remain poorly understood. Although biochar-induced alkalization has been widely proposed as a key mechanism influencing soil carbon mineralization, whether increased soil pH alone can explain feedstock-dependent CO2 responses remain unresolved. Here, we investigated the effects of biochars derived from six feedstocks on CO2 emissions, soil chemical properties, microbial functional traits, and extracellular enzyme a

Conservative Spruce Outperforms Acquisitive Larch Under Warming and CO2.

Predicting boreal forest growth is hindered by limited experimental tests on the compounding effects of climate change and atmospheric CO2. We integrated regional tree-ring data with a peatland warming and CO2 manipulation experiment, including 45 trait measurements, to assess growth responses of two widespread boreal conifers, Larix laricina and Picea mariana, to temperature, vapor pressure deficit (VPD), soil moisture, and elevated CO2. L. laricina growth was consistently more climate-sensitive than P. mariana, increasing strongly with soil moisture and declining slightly with VPD at the reg

Biodegradable and Non-Biodegradable Microplastics Drive Divergent Microbial Carbon and Nitrogen Metabolism Regimes in Soil-Plant Systems.

The accumulation of microplastics (MPs) in soils worldwide has raised concerns about their potential impacts on microbially mediated carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) cycling. However, whether biodegradable and non-biodegradable MPs differently affect microbial C and N metabolism and coupling, and whether these responses are modulated by co-occurring plant identity remain uncertain. We combined a meta-analysis with a controlled pot experiment comparing soil responses under two congeneric plant species exposed to two biodegradable and two non-biodegradable MPs at doses ranging from 0% to 2% (w/w). Lagging Restoration Exacerbates Vegetation Carbon Sink Deficits in China's Surface Coal Mining Areas.

The global demand for coal is dramatically altering landscapes, yet the full impact on critical ecosystem functions like carbon sequestration and the efficacy of restoration efforts remains inadequately quantified. This is particularly critical for surface coal mining, where restoration lags can induce long-term carbon sink deficits. To overcome the limitations of current research in baseline setting and process analysis, we develop an accounting method that integrates multisource satellite data with dynamic baseline modeling to decouple mining and restoration impacts over 23 years in China's

Thermal and Hydrological Controls on Soil Respiration and Subsurface Gas Transport in Arctic Tundra Ecosystems.

Arctic tundra ecosystems have experienced marked changes in temperature and precipitation patterns in recent decades. The impact of these changes on the physical and biogeochemical mechanisms governing soil respiration and CO2 emissions remains poorly understood. We investigate how seasonal thermo-hydrological dynamics impact soil freezing/thawing, soil respiration, and O2 and CO2 transport and exchange in a typical well-drained Arctic tundra ecosystem by combining laboratory experiments and field observations with process-based modeling. Our results demonstrate that low temperatures constrain

Highly compliant deformable soft actuators enable the engineering of adaptive life-like systems. Biohybrid living materials expand possibilities for autonomous, self-powered, environmentally responsive systems with easy biological integration. Here, we present a light-driven living soft actuator that integrates the photosynthetic microalga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii with a pH-responsive poly(3-(acrylamido)phenylboronic acid-acrylamide)/polyacrylamide bilayer hydrogel. When exposed to light, through photosynthesis and N-assimilation, the microalgae locally ionize the polymer network, causing the

Re: The efficacy, satisfaction, and safety of carbon dioxide (CO2) fractional laser in combination with pulsed dye laser (PDL) versus each one alone in the treatment of hypertrophic burn scars: a single-blinded randomized controlled trial.

This letter comments on the randomized trial by Karimi Kivi et al. comparing pulsed dye laser (PDL), ablative fractional carbon dioxide laser (AFCL), and their combination for hypertrophic burn scars. Several reporting and methodological issues warrant clarification, including the apparent inconsistency in the presentation of Vancouver Scar Scale data, the discrepancy between the reported total number of scars and the numbers shown in the original article, and the statistical handling of multiple scars from the same patient. Clarification of these issues would improve the transparency and inte

Elevated carbon dioxide in exhaled breath induces false-positive DOB results during Helicobacter pylori detection with ¹³C-urea breath test using infrared spectroscopy.

BACKGROUND: The urea breath test (UBT) detects Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) by measuring 13CO₂ in exhaled air after the ingestion of a 13C-urea metabolized by bacterial urease. However, the influence of CO₂ concentrations in exhaled breath on UBT results remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of varying exhaled CO₂ levels on the outcomes of infrared spectroscopy-based ¹³C-UBT. METHODS: Six volunteers confirmed to be H. pylori-negative via ¹³C-UBT and stool antigen assay were enrolled. All participants completed overnight fasting and oral rinsing before specimen collection

Case Report: Chemical gastropathy associated with Scotch mint candy ingestion.

Erosive lesions may occur in the gastric mucosa after exposure to toxic substances such as alcohol, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or iron. Candies rarely contain compounds that cause mucosal erosions. However, Scotch mints in combination with carbonated sodas are known to cause vigorous effervescence. The microporous surface of Scotch mint candy allows for rapid release of dissolved carbon dioxide from carbonated soda that produces carbon dioxide bubbles. We report a case of a 3-year-old child who presented with abdominal pain and feeding refusal and was found to have erosive chemical

Calcification patterns of a foundation species reveal resilience to environmental change in southern California over the twentieth century.

Oceanographic changes due to carbon dioxide emissions have complex and varied impacts on marine calcifying taxa. Changes in calcification can unfold over decades or longer, requiring a longer-term understanding of biomineralization patterns than laboratory-based studies can provide. Here, we investigate the calcification history of the marine mussel Mytilus californianus to determine how this ecologically critical foundation species has responded to past and ongoing environmental changes in the southern end of its range within the California Current System (CCS) between 27.72° N and 34.47° N.

Cofrequency Resonance Enhanced GaAs Photoelectrode Performance and Charge Transfer Characteristics under 740 nm Illumination.

The efficiency of semiconductor catalysts and solar cells in photovoltaic devices and photoelectrochemical assemblies is largely determined by their absorption characteristics in the visible region, especially at longer wavelengths. In this paper, we systematically investigate the in-situ electrochemical characterization and the open-circuit voltage (Voc) of GaAs electrodes and GaInP/GaAs/Ge solar cells under 430, 480, 565, 740, and 808 nm illumination, respectively, and found that their actions of photogenerated charge generation, separation, and transfer were significantly dependent on wavel

Case Report: persistent diaphragmatic and cardiac involvement despite creatine kinase normalization in anti-mitochondrial M2 antibody-positive inflammatory myopathy with primary biliary cholangitis.

Anti-mitochondrial M2 antibodies (AMA-M2) are a serologic hallmark of primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), but in inflammatory myopathy they have also been associated with chronic muscle disease, cardiac involvement, and respiratory muscle weakness. We report a 44-year-old woman who developed progressive proximal lower-limb weakness followed by palpitations, exertional dyspnea, and severe hypercapnic respiratory failure. Serum creatine kinase (CK) was only moderately elevated (peak, 789 U/L). AMA-M2 remained strongly positive with anti-gp210 and anti-sp100 antibodies. Low-level anti-HMGCR IgG wa
