Significant Turning Point: Common Buzzard (Buteo buteo) Exposure to Second-Generation Anticoagulant Rodenticides in the United Kingdom.

Second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides (SGARs) are widely used to control rodent populations, resulting in the serious secondary exposure of predators to these contaminants. In the United Kingdom (UK), professional use and purchase of SGARs were revised in the 2010s. Certain highly toxic SGARs have been authorized since then to be used outdoors around buildings as resistance-breaking chemicals under risk mitigation procedures. However, it is still uncertain whether and how these regulatory changes have influenced the secondary exposure of birds of prey to SGARs. Based on biomonitoring of

Attitudes of clients of Dutch pest controllers towards integrated pest management (IPM) and preventive measures in relation to rodent nuisance.

BACKGROUND: Rodent management with lethal methods (e.g., rodenticides) comes with downsides for rodent welfare, the environment and non-target species. To reduce chemical use and prevent rodent nuisance, pest controllers in the Netherlands must work according to the principles of integrated pest management (IPM). A condition for the success of IPM is that there is sufficient engagement of all parties involved, including clients of pest controllers. The aim of this study was to gain insight into the attitudes of clients regarding rodent control, IPM and the application of preventive measures. I

Short-term treatment with cholestyramine increases long-acting anticoagulant rodenticide clearance from rabbits without affecting plasma vitamin K1 levels or blood coagulation.

Administration of high-dose vitamin K1 (VK1) overcomes coagulopathy and bleeding elicited by acute poisoning with long-acting anticoagulant rodenticides (LAARs). However, long-term (months) treatment is required due to long LAAR biological half-lives that may lead to poor compliance and recurrent coagulopathy. The half-lives of LAARs are extended by slow metabolism, and similar to warfarin, are thought to undergo enterohepatic recirculation. We now show that treatment with the bile acid sequestrant cholestyramine (CSA) administered concomitantly with VK1 decreases plasma LAAR levels and increa

Broad-scale pesticide screening finds anticoagulant rodenticide and legacy pesticides in Australian frogs.

Pesticide contamination poses a significant threat to non-target wildlife, including amphibians, many of which are already highly threatened. This study assessed the extent of pesticide exposure in dead frogs collected during a mass mortality event across eastern New South Wales, Australia between July 2021 and March 2022. Liver tissue from 77 individual frogs of six species were analysed for >600 legacy and contemporary pesticides, including rodenticides. More than a third (36 %) of the liver samples contained at least one of the following pesticides: brodifacoum, dieldrin, DDE, heptachlor/he

A strategy to improve rodent control while reducing rodenticide release into the environment.

In addition to having a negative impact on the health of people and domestic animals, rodents often cause enormous damage to the environment by disrupting natural biodiversity. The negative impacts of rodents in urban and rural areas have required intensive use of rodentcides in spite of the proven risk of secondary poisoning of non-target predators and scavengers. Continuous and intensive use of rodenticides has led to environmental pollution through their retention in the environment. Commensal rodents are predominantly managed with anticoagulant rodenticides, which are very persistent in th

Elusive mustelids-18 months in the search of near-threatened stoat (Mustela erminea) and weasel (M. nivalis) reveals low captures.

Stoat (Mustela erminea) and weasel (M. nivalis) are hard to monitor as they are elusive of nature and leave few identifying marks in their surroundings. Stoat and weasel are both fully protected in Denmark and are thought to be widely distributed throughout the country. Despite this stoat and weasel were listed on the Danish Red List as Near Threatened in 2019, as their densities and population trends are unknown. Using a modified novel camera trapping device, the Double-Mostela, a wooden box comprising a tracking tunnel and two camera traps, we attempted to obtain density estimates based on i

The Enigma of Norbormide, a Rattus-Selective Toxicant.

Norbormide (NRB) is a Rattus-selective toxicant, which was serendipitously discovered in 1964 and formerly marketed as an eco-friendly rodenticide that was deemed harmless to non-Rattus species. However, due to inconsistent efficacy and the emergence of second-generation anticoagulants, its usage declined, with registration lapsing in 2003. NRBs' lethal action in rats entails irreversible vasoconstriction of peripheral arteries, likely inducing cardiac damage: however, the precise chain of events leading to fatality and the target organs involved remain elusive. This unique contractile effect

The missing toxic link: Exposure of non-target native marsupials to second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides (SGARs) suggest a potential route of transfer into apex predators.

Anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) are used globally to control rodent pests. Second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides (SGARs) persist in the liver and pose a significant risk of bioaccumulation and secondary poisoning in predators, including species that do not generally consume rodents. As such, there is a clear need to understand the consumption of ARs, particularly SGARs, by non-target consumers to determine the movement of these anticoagulants through ecosystems. We collected and analysed the livers from deceased common brushtail possums (Trichosurus vulpecula) and common ringtail possu

Anticoagulant rodenticide exposure in common buzzards: Impact of new rules for rodenticide use.

Rodenticides are a key component of rodent management strategies, but birds of prey are susceptible to non-target exposure. New rules on sale and use of rodenticide products were introduced across the UK in 2016 in an industry-led stewardship scheme, with the aim of reducing this risk. To determine if this intervention has achieved its aim, exposure to second generation anticoagulant rodenticides (SGARs) was measured in buzzards. Liver samples from 790 buzzards collected between 2005 and 2022 (excluding 2016 and 2017 samples) were analyzed and the percentage presence and concentrations of SGAR

Anticoagulation reversal (vitamin K, prothrombin complex concentrates, idarucizumab, andexanet-α, protamine).

Bleeding events are common in patients prescribed anticoagulants and can have devastating consequences. Several specific and nonspecific agents have been developed to reverse the effects of anticoagulant drugs or toxins. Vitamin K, as the oldest of these antidotes, specifically counteracts the effects of pharmaceuticals and rodenticides designed to deplete stores of vitamin K-dependent factors. In cases of life-threatening bleeding, the addition of prothrombin complex concentrates (PCCs) allows for the immediate replacement of coagulation factors. While the use of PCCs has been extended to the

Silent Bird Poisoning in Poland: Reconfirmation of Bromadiolone and Warfarin as the Proximal Causes Using GC-MS/MS-Based Methodology for Forensic Investigations.

The extensive use of rodenticides poses a severe threat to non-target species, particularly birds of prey and scavengers. In this study, a GC-MS/MS-based method was used to unlock the cause of bird deaths in Poland. Organs (liver, heart, kidney, and lungs) collected during autopsies of two rooks (Corvus frugilegus) and one carrion crow (Corvus corone corone), as well as fecal samples, were analyzed for the presence of anticoagulant coumarin derivatives, i.e., warfarin and bromadiolone. As for warfarin, the highest concentration was found in crow samples overall, with concentrations in the fece

Exposure to anticoagulant rodenticides in steppe polecat (Mustela eversmanii) and European polecat (Mustela putorius) in central Europe.

Poisoning caused by coumarin-type anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) stands as the predominant method for controlling rodents globally. ARs, through secondary poisoning, pose a significant threat to predators due to their lethal and sublethal effects. We examined the concentration of accumulated ARs in liver samples of mostly road-killed steppe polecats (Mustela eversmanii) and European polecats (M. putorius) collected throughout Hungary between 2005 and 2021. The steppe polecat samples were found mainly from Eastern Hungary, while European polecats from Western Hungary. We measured the concentr

Poisoning by butylated hydroxytoluene quinone methide acting as a superwarfarin: first reported case in humans.

Superwarfarins are anticoagulant rodenticides nearly 100-fold potent than the parent compound. Since their development, accidental and intentional cases of superwarfarin poisoning have been reported. We report the first human case of poisoning by butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) quinone methide acting as a superwarfarin otherwise reported to be a well tolerated food additive and preservative and used as an antioxidant, stabilizer, anti-skinning agent in various industries. We aim to highlight the possible underlying cause of this previously unreported and potentially lethal BHT-related complicat

Widespread use of anticoagulant rodenticides in agricultural and urban environments. A menace to the viability of the endangered Bonelli's eagle (Aquila fasciata) populations.

Anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) are one of the most toxic groups of compounds currently used worldwide for rodent pest control. Toxic baits are often, directly or indirectly, ingested by non-target animals, resulting in secondary poisoning and frequently affecting apex predators. Their presence in many species of raptors is quite common, particularly scavenger species, with some of these acting as sentinels for the presence of these substances in the environment. However, there is less data on the presence of ARs in Bonelli's eagle, one of the most endangered eagle species in Spain and which

Auxiliary Partial Orthotopic Liver Transplantation Is a Safe and Effective Option for Yellow Phosphorus Toxin-induced Acute Liver Failure.

BACKGROUND: Ingestion of yellow phosphorus-containing rodenticides (YPR) or firecrackers is an important cause of acute liver failure (ALF) in young adults and children, particularly in South and South-East Asia and South America. Emergency liver transplantation is indicated in cases refractory to intensive supportive therapy, including low-volume plasma exchange. There are no published reports on the feasibility of auxiliary partial orthotopic liver transplantation (APOLT) for YPR-induced ALF. METHODS: Clinical details of patients undergoing APOLT for YPR-induced ALF in 1 unit are reported.

Unveiling the potency of ready-to-use brodifacoum blocks in lesser bandicoot rats: exploring toxicity, blood clotting factors, and organ histology.

BACKGROUND: The present study unveiled the effectiveness of ready-to-use brodifacoum blocks (0.005%) against the prevalent field rat species in southeast Asia, Bandicota bengalensis. Brodifacoum, a more potent second-generation anticoagulant, offers a solution for managing rodents resistant to other anticoagulants of its class. METHODOLOGY: Male and female bandicoot rats caught wild were exposed to brodifacoum for 1, 2, and 3 days in both the no-choice and bi-choice tests. The observations included mortality rates, impact on body weight, food consumption, blood clotting factors, organ weights
