Adapting the Tobacco Pack Surveillance System Protocol to Assess Electronic Cigarette Packaging: Protocol for a Content Analysis.

BACKGROUND: In 2021, a total of 82 million people used electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) globally. E-cigarette regulations around the globe vary widely from the product being banned in some jurisdictions to being completely unregulated in others. The Tobacco Pack Surveillance System (TPackSS) was initiated in 2012 to monitor tobacco packs available in 14 low- and middle-income countries with the greatest number of people who smoke. The aim of TPackSS is to assess compliance with country-specific tobacco packaging and labeling requirements and identify marketing features and appeals used on

Standardising the measurement of cigar tax rates in the USA, 2010-2024.

BACKGROUND: State cigar taxes in the USA vary widely in structure and level, unlike cigarette taxes which are typically levied uniformly per pack. This complexity has limited the comparability of cigar tax levels across states, products and time and relative to other tobacco products. METHODS: We create and publicly release a database of quarterly state and local cigar taxes from 2010 to 2024, standardised to per unit rates by cigar type. Matching Universal Product Code (UPC)-level cigar sales data from the NielsenIQ Retail Scanner Dataset to state and local tax rates by product type, we deve

The Case for a Pregnancy-Specific Nicotine Policy.

AIMS: We aimed to evaluate the proposition that nicotine delivery by any means during pregnancy adversely affects the fetus and infant, review national policies on nicotine use in pregnancy across four high-income countries and propose a coherent pregnancy-specific nicotine policy framework. METHODS: Clinical guidelines, public health policy documents and evidence-based recommendations on tobacco and nicotine use in pregnancy were reviewed. RESULTS: Smoking in pregnancy is strongly associated with adverse perinatal outcomes. Similar but less consistent associations are reported with snus and

Beyond Acculturation: Ethnic Identity, Tobacco and Nicotine Product Use, and Health Among Arab Americans.

BACKGROUND: Arab Americans are one of the fastest-growing immigrant populations in the United States, yet they remain largely invisible in tobacco surveillance and prevention efforts due to their classification as "White" in national data. Despite evidence of elevated tobacco use and chronic disease burden, limited research has examined how cultural, psychological, and social factors shape tobacco-related health risks in this community. OBJECTIVES: This study examined associations between ethnic identity, tobacco use, and health outcomes (self-rated health, chronic disease diagnosis) among Ar

From awareness to action: building monitoring capacity for tobacco and nicotine industry interference-experience from the JA PreventNCD project.

Industry interference remains a major barrier to effective tobacco control. WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) Article 5.3 obliges Parties to protect public health policies from industry influence, yet systematic monitoring of interference is often lacking. The emergence of new nicotine products and actors further complicate implementation and monitoring. Within Joint Action PreventNCD, we assessed monitoring and information exchange practices related to tobacco and nicotine industry interference in five European countries (Belgium, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, and Slovenia). Characterizing the tobacco and nicotine information environment for information seekers on YouTube.

OBJECTIVE: This research aims to characterize the English language tobacco and nicotine information environment on YouTube by examining the content to which those who actively seek tobacco and nicotine content are exposed. METHODS: We used Google Trends, YouTube's Application Programming Interface (API), and a custom python script to sample the most common videos populated by the most common search terms, and the most common videos populated by YouTube's recommendation feed. After categorizing search terms as "Health Information Seeking" (HIS), "Pro-tobacco/Nicotine" (PtN), or Ambiguous, a co

Accurate health information is the best strategy against misinformation and disinformation: respiratory specialists are on the front line.

INTRODUCTION: Disinformation refers to false information deliberately shared with the intent to cause harm. Disinformation is escalating because health is a global concern and tends to elicit strong emotional responses. Misinformation refers to false information shared without malicious intent. AREAS COVERED: Health-related misinformation and disinformation undermine prevention efforts, distort health behaviors, and erode trust in institutions and professionals. A French mission identified three vulnerabilities: low health literacy, difficulty in assessing the reliability of sources, and algo

Preferred Sources of Health-Risk Information About Cigarettes, e-Cigarettes, and Waterpipes Among Adolescents in Germany: A Cross-Sectional Analysis of a Large School-Based Survey.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent nicotine use remains a major public health concern, particularly in the context of increasing e-cigarette uptake and gaps in tobacco-control communication. Effective prevention requires evidence on the information channels through which adolescents prefer to receive risk information about tobacco and nicotine products. OBJECTIVES: This study examined adolescents' preferred sources for receiving information about the health risks of cigarettes, e-cigarettes, and waterpipes in Germany, and assessed differences by age, gender, school type, and nicotine-use status. DESIGN:

Tobacco use and commercial variants: Trends in biomarker-based research.

The health consequences of cigarette smoking and its commercial variants have been extensively investigated for more than three decades. However, despite substantial evidence demonstrating the detrimental effects of tobacco use, including respiratory and cardiovascular diseases and several types of cancer, the global number of users remains alarmingly high. This scientometric review mapped the scientific literature on the health impacts of cigarettes and commercial tobacco products, focusing on studies employing biomarkers of toxicological effects, including the comet assay, micronucleus test,

When 'vape-free' should mean 'smoke-free': third-hand e-cigarette residues and the developing lung.

E-cigarettes are widely perceived as a safer alternative to tobacco, and that perception often extends to their use around infants and children. Yet exhaled aerosol deposits onto indoor surfaces, leaving a residue, known as third-hand e-cigarette aerosol, that can be re-emitted, ingested, or absorbed through the skin. The developmental consequences of such exposure have been almost entirely unexplored. In this issue of Pediatric Research, Zaman et al. begin to address that gap, exposing neonatal mice to third-hand e-cigarette aerosol-contaminated terrycloth and carpet in early-life. The author

Key challenges for in vitro testing of oral tobacco and nicotine products for regulatory applications: Recommendations for using in vitro toxicity and disease models.

The Institute for In Vitro Sciences (IIVS) has sponsored a series of workshops with the aim of developing recommendations for scientific and technical approaches to conducting in vitro assays to assess potential toxicity within and across tobacco and nicotine products. As well as providing a background overview of oral tobacco and nicotine products, this report focuses on the methods used to generate extracts from these products for in vitro testing, the recommended best testing practices, and suggested areas for future research. This publication was developed by a working group of workshop me

Preliminary evaluation of UP2UTeacher, a brief intervention addressing tobacco and nicotine use for high school students.

BACKGROUND: Given the changing tobacco landscape and rates of tobacco and nicotine product (TNP) use among youth, there is a need for effective interventions that address all forms of currently available TNPs. The current study sought to evaluate the short-term impact of UP2U Teacher, a single session, universal group-based intervention delivered in schools that addresses all TNPs. METHODS: High school students (N = 242) were provided with a pre- and immediate post-survey upon receiving UP2UTeacher. McNemar's test was used to assess pre-post changes in willingness among groups. Trends in waterpipe and e-cigarette use among young people in the European Union, 2012-2023: a repeated cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Alternative tobacco and nicotine-containing products can challenge progress in tobacco control. Waterpipes and e-cigarettes gained popularity among youth at different times, driven by flavours, social influence, and perceived reduced harm. This study examined trends in waterpipe and e-cigarette use among youth in the European Union (EU) from 2012 to 2023. METHODS: We analysed data from five waves (2012-2023) of the Special Eurobarometer surveys in 26 EU Member States (N = 20,466; ages 15-30). Multilevel Poisson models assessed trends by sociodemographic subgroups, adjusting for co

Awareness and use of oral tobacco and nicotine products among people who smoke or recently stopped smoking: Descriptive findings from the 2024 EASE/ITC New Zealand Survey.

INTRODUCTION: Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ) disallows sales of oral tobacco and nicotine products, although importation for personal use is permitted. The government proposes legalising sales, claiming this will aid smoking cessation among "older, long-term smokers." We examined awareness and use of tobacco-free oral nicotine products (ONPs), snus, and other oral tobacco products among adults who smoke or who recently stopped smoking. METHODS: We analysed Wave 5 (2024) data from the EASE/International Tobacco Control (ITC) NZ Survey (N=1,371) of adults who smoke or recently stopped smoking. We ex

"Nicotine initiation products in Germany: Findings from a representative survey of individuals aged 14 years and older who had ever used nicotine-containing products".

INTRODUCTION: Smoking prevalence in Germany has remained high in recent years, with around 30 % of the population smoking. Related nicotine products, such as e-cigarettes, are increasingly popular, especially among youth. Unlike previous generations, for whom nicotine use typically began with traditional cigarettes, initiation pathways may now increasingly involve these related nicotine products. METHODS: Data from 1,164 participants aged 14 years and older were collected between August and September 2022 through the DEBRA study (German Study on Tobacco Use), using computer-assisted household

Cigarette smoke and e-cigarette aerosol extracts induce myelopoiesis and suppress inflammatory cytokine production.

Tobacco and nicotine use remain leading preventable drivers of cancer risk, and both combustible cigarettes and electronic nicotine devices perturb immune function and hematopoiesis. However, side-by-side comparisons of their effects across the hematopoietic hierarchy remain limited. Here, we evaluate the impact of cigarette smoke extract (CSE) and e-cigarette vapor extract (EVE) on inflammatory responses in mature myeloid cells and on hematopoietic stem and progenitor cell function using complementary in vitro and in vivo approaches. Using a standardized protocol applied across multiple macro
