The Physiology behind the Epidemiology of Heat-Related Health Impacts.

A direct consequence of climate change is the intensification of hot weather and extreme heat events that are epidemiologically associated with a greater risk of heat-related illnesses and other adverse health outcomes, often resulting in subsequent hospital admissions and mortality. The health risks associated with hot weather directly arise from the body's physiological responses (i.e., heat strain) to heat exposure. The magnitude of heat strain experienced and the extent of heat strain required to cause an adverse health outcome can be modulated by personal characteristics and the adoption

The Potential Role and Effective Components of Sanyeqing as the Potential Therapeutic Candidates for IBD and CRC.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a family of chronic inflammatory diseases such as Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). Among the serious malignancies that can arise from IBD, colorectal cancer is particularly prevalent. Individuals suffering from both IBD and CRC often endure similar symptoms, which include diarrhea, rectal bleeding, abdominal discomfort, weight decline, and profound exhaustion. Sanyeqing is a traditional herbaceous medicinal plant with anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, heat-clearing, detoxifying, and liver-protecting effects. Here, we summarize the po

Prediction modeling of land surface temperature in relation to land cover dynamics and health risk perception analysis in barishal city of Bangladesh.

Rapid urbanization has brought about rapid changes in land-use and land-cover (LULC) patterns, significantly affecting land surface temperatures (LST). This study uses GIS and remote sensing techniques to assess changes in LULC classes and their impacts on LST at the Barishal City Corporation (BCC) of Bangladesh. As summer is the season with the highest temperature, the study considered the months from March to July from 1998-2024. The key findings of this study reveal a substantial increase in the mean land surface temperature, increasing by 5.75°C from 1998-2024, with the highest temperature

Discarded sericultural mulberry branch based triple layer composite phase change material with lignin enhanced thermal management capability.

With the exhaustion of fossil fuels, prior phase change materials are characterized by such drawbacks as poor thermal conductivity, weak shape stability, and high costs. Therefore, the preparation of phase change materials with brilliant thermal-insulating properties, high thermal conductivity, and leakage-free properties has emerged as a crucial research focus. Herein, a sericultural mulberry branch-derived (SMB) composite phase change material was prepared by deep eutectic solvent pretreated SMB and vacuum-assisted impregnated paraffin wax with cupric oxide (CuO). The anisotropic porous SMB

Skin temperature adapted physiological strain index (aPSI) predicts exertional heat illness.

Objective.Exertional heat illness (EHI) remains a challenge for those that exercise in hot and humid environments. Physiological status monitoring is an attractive method for assessing EHI risk and a critical component of recommended layered risk management approaches. While there is consensus that some combination of core body temperature, mean skin temperature, heart rate, and hydration provide an indication of heat strain, a field-feasible metric that correlates to EHI incidence has not been identified.Approach.We present a comparison of five practicable heat strain indices (skin temperatur

Detection of activated perforasome patterns and the correlation with acute internal load parameters during and following incremental cycling.

PURPOSE: Infrared thermography can be used to investigate the kinetics of thermoregulatory processes during exercise. The kinetics of the thermal contrast index (TCI), associated with activated perforasomes, and correlation with selected cardiovascular, metabolic, and subjective parameters have not been investigated during exercise. METHODS: After a 5 min warm-up, n = 21 male cyclists performed an incremental test on a cycling ergometer until volitional exhaustion, followed by 15 min passive recovery. Lactate, heart rate, energy expenditure, oxygen consumption, and rating of perceived exertio

Acute Effects of Caffeine and Taurine Co-Ingestion on Time to Exhaustion and Thermoregulatory Responses to Cycling in the Heat.

Caffeine and taurine are commonly co-ingested pre-exercise but elicit different thermoregulatory responses; however, their combined effect on thermoregulation is unknown. Therefore, we evaluated the effects of oral caffeine and taurine co-ingestion on time to exhaustion (TTE) and thermoregulatory responses to cycling in the heat at the gas exchange threshold (GET). Ten healthy nonheat acclimated participants took part in a double-blind crossover study, completing a TTE in the heat (35°C; 40% relative humidity), cycling at a power output associated with the GET and 1 h after ingesting: caffeine

Exertional Heat Illness Recovery and Recurrence.

INTRODUCTION: Exertional heat illness (EHI) is a threat to force health and readiness. EHI recovery can entail lengthy periods of lost duty time as providers ensure that patients have completely recovered and that the risk for recurrent EHI is low. Although EHI recurrence is a common concern, there is little research to inform or predict EHI recurrence. Here we describe characteristics associated with EHI duty restrictions and use them to predict EHI recurrence and prognosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We studied a retrospective cohort of 1,742 US Army soldiers who received EHI duty restrictions

Eomesodermin+ CD4+ T cells are critical for curative immunotherapy outcomes.

Interleukin 10 (IL-10)-producing CD4+ type-1 regulatory T cells (Tr1) promote immune tolerance during chronic infection, autoimmunity, and transplantation. However, specific Eomesodermin (Eomes)-dependent stages of Tr1 differentiation and function remain unclear. Using preclinical models of bone marrow transplantation (BMT), we demonstrated a Tr1 differentiation trajectory in vivo from Eomes+IL-10- to Eomes+IL-10+ subsets with the acquisition of cytokine, cytolytic, and exhaustion features. The Eomes+CD4+ fraction represented the dominant cytotoxic subset after BMT, mediating graft-versus-leuk

Smallholder farmers' perceptions of the impact of climate change on the mental and physical health of their livestock in semi-arid Ghana.

Climate change is increasingly disrupting smallholder farming systems across sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), with significant consequences for livestock health. While physical health impacts are relatively documented, the mental health dimension of livestock welfare remains underexplored, particularly in climate-vulnerable, low-resource settings. This study examined smallholder farmers' perceptions of their livestock health in Ghana's semi-arid Upper West Region and identified farmer-driven solutions for adaptation. Guided by the One Health framework, qualitative data were collected through focus gr

Evaporative microclimate interval cooling reduces heat stress in thermal insulating protective clothing.

BACKGROUND: Water vapour resistance of thermal insulating protective clothing impedes sweat evaporation, the most substantial pathway of heat dissipation for working humans. Consequently, metabolic heat can increase body core temperature rapidly, which can result in life-threatening heat illnesses. The evaporative microclimate cooling method Dry Air Comfort (DAC) has been shown to be very effective for reducing the risk of heat induced illnesses. Aim of this study was to determine whether DAC can also prevent heat stress when used in intervals. METHODS: Using a balanced within-subject design

Infection-adaptive regenerative wound healing through rationally engineered copper-polyphenol artificial enzymes enabling quadruple-modal ROS cascade modulation in pathological microenvironments.

While artificial enzyme-based catalytic therapies offer promise for bacterial infection treatment through cost-effectiveness and substrate specificity, conventional systems remain hampered by monofunctionality and inadequate catalytic efficiency. Here, we developed PRSA-Cu, a copper-phenolic coordination polymer artificial enzyme with multi‑copper centers and mixed-valence states (Cu2+ and Cu+) enabling synergistic antibacterial mechanisms. Initially, this multimodal system amplifies oxidative stress by imitating enzyme processes to generate hydroxyl radicals (•OH) through Cu2+/Cu+-mediated pe
