Pseudo-Dribbling Experience Using Single Overlapped Vibrotactile Stimulation Simultaneously to the Hand and the Feet.

When designing a haptic interface, simplicity is crucial to avoid negative effects caused by excessive weight and complexity. Using multimodal information, haptic illusions, and providing context are known to create simpler interfaces. We have previously proposed the use of single overlapped vibrotactile stimulation (SOVS) for presenting spatiotemporal tactile perception, a method that simultaneously presents overlapped waveforms to multiple body parts. There, the acceleration measured from a person dribbling a basketball with an accelerometer positioned on the index finger and the floor was o

Trends and Associations of Chilblains Prevalence with Connective Tissue Diseases, Including COVID-19 Incidence.

BACKGROUND: Chillblains, also known as perniosis, are inflammatory skin lesions that have long been associated with exposure to low temperatures. However, their co-occurrence with autoimmune illnesses and viral infections, particularly COVID-19, has received increased attention. This study was designed to examine chilblains' documented prevalence and association with autoimmune diseases and COVID-19. METHODS: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study carried out at Mass General Brigham (MGB), an extensive integrated healthcare system situated in Greater Boston, Massachusetts. The study inc

Tokishigyakukagoshuyushokyoto (TSGST) Inhibits Aggression Induced by Isolation Rearing in Mice.

Herbal medicines are widely used in clinical practice. Several herbal medicines are prescribed in clinical practice to improve mental symptoms. Yokukansan is an effective prescription for irritability and aggression, which are behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) or autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, because herbal medicines contain many components, their pharmacological effects have not been analyzed in detail. Risperidone and quetiapine are prescribed in severe cases; however, their side effects of oversedation are problematic. Tokishigyakukagoshuyushokyoto (TSGST)

Myasthenia Gravis as a Manifestation of Aicardi-Goutières Syndrome Due to a SAMHD1 Variant Successfully Treated With Baricitinib.

Aicardi-Goutières syndrome (AGS) is a rare inherited disorder that mainly affects the brain, immune system, and skin. It is caused by mutations that lead to calcium buildup in the brain, which is thought to trigger an immune response. Autoimmune features, such as chilblains, overlap with those seen in systemic lupus erythematosus. We describe a case of a male toddler with an AGS phenotype and a heterozygous mutation in the SAMHD1 gene, who developed juvenile myasthenia gravis (MG) and was successfully treated with baricitinib. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of AGS associated

Discordant phenotype caused by TREX1 variant in siblings with Aicardi-Goutières syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Autosomal recessive Aicardi-Goutières syndrome (AGS) and autosomal dominant familial chilblain lupus (FCL) are rare type I interferonopathies that can both result from loss-of-function variants in the TREX1 gene, which encodes a DNA exonuclease. Although phenotypic variability is well recognized in TREX1-related disorders, intrafamilial phenotypic discordance is seldom seen. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe two siblings carrying a novel homozygous TREX1 variant (c.341G > T, p.Arg114Leu) who exhibit strikingly different clinical phenotypes. The younger sibling presented at 4 months of

Novel association of chilblains with inflammatory arthritis- series of three cases and review of literature.

Chilblains are well circumscribed erythrocyanotic lesions seen usually on limbs distally and triggered by cold and damp conditions; they can be primary or secondary. Association of SLE and chilblains is well established, and there are also reports of associations with vasculitis and antiphospholipid syndrome. There remain considerable gaps in literature about the management of secondary chilblains. Three studies looking at primary chilblains showed some benefit from corticosteroids, but this was inferior to pentoxifylline and tadalafil. There are no trials in secondary chilblains. Chilblains h

Overlapping Aicardi-Goutières and Singleton-Merten syndromes with a heterozygous gain-of-function mutation in IFIH1 mimicking juvenile idiopathic arthritis.

Aicardi-Goutières syndrome (AGS) and Singleton-Merten syndrome (SMS) are associated with heterozygous gain-of-function mutations in the interferon induced with helicase C domain 1 (IFIH1) gene. Recent reports describe patients exhibiting overlapping clinical features of AGS and SMS, along with marked type I interferon (IFN) overproduction. However, the clinical characteristics and optimal treatment strategies remain unclear. Herein, we present a patient with overlapping clinical features of AGS and SMS who was initially misdiagnosed with juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Surgical soft tissue rele

Acrocyanosis: The Least Known Acrosyndrome Revisited With a Dermatologic Perspective.

Background: Acrocyanosis is a functional peripheral vascular disorder, currently categorized under the canopy of acrosyndromes, i.e., a group of clinically similar and significantly overlapping vascular disorders involving the acral skin. The disorder might be primary or secondary, depending on the cause. Recently, there has been a remarkable surge in acrocyanosis prevalence along with the COVID-19 pandemic. Both COVID-19 infection and vaccines for COVID-19 have been affixed to the list of disorders instigating acrocyanosis. Objectives: The goal of this narrative review was to evaluate the exi

Chilblains With Tumid Lupus Features in a Patient With Sjögren's Syndrome: A Case Report.

Sjögren's syndrome is an autoimmune disorder characterized by lymphocytic infiltration of exocrine glands, primarily affecting the lacrimal and salivary glands, resulting in dry eyes and mouth. We report a case of a 22-year-old female with Sjögren's syndrome (diagnosed at age 14), who developed chilblain-like lesions with histopathological features of tumid lupus. The patient presented with low-grade fever and painful erythematous papules on the fingers, toes, ears, face, and trunk. Serological workup revealed multiple autoantibodies (anti-SSA (Sjögren's-syndrome-related antigen A), anti-SSB (

A China-Based exploration of surgical timing for polytrauma with a focus on fracture reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: For patients with severe polytrauma and fractures, early fracture reconstruction surgery under stable conditions can significantly reduce pulmonary and other complications. However, premature surgical intervention may heighten infection risk, adversely affecting the patient's prognosis. Consequently, determining the optimal timing of surgery is crucial for patients with multiple traumatic injuries. Given China's healthcare context, this study will assess injury severity and perform definitive fracture reconstruction at specified post-trauma intervals. Postoperative infection rates,

Proactive esophageal cooling during radiofrequency cardiac ablation: data update including applications in very high-power short duration ablation.

INTRODUCTION: Proactive esophageal cooling reduces injury during radiofrequency (RF) ablation of the left atrium (LA) for the treatment of atrial fibrillation (AF). New catheters are capable of higher wattage settings up to 90 W (very high-power short duration, vHPSD) for 4 s. Varying power and duration, however, does not eliminate the risk of thermal injury. Furthermore, alternative energy sources such as pulsed field ablation (PFA) also exhibit thermal effects, with clinical data showing esophageal temperatures up to 40.3°C. The ensoETM esophageal cooling device (Attune Medical, now a part o

French protocol for diagnosis and management of type 1 interferonopathies.

Type I interferonopathies are rare genetic diseases characterised by excessive production or signalling of type I interferons (IFN-I), which are key cytokines in the antiviral response. These conditions lead to inappropriate activation of IFN-I pathway, even in the absence of viral stimulation. Over thirty monogenic conditions have been identified, with Aicardi-Goutières syndrome being the most common. The genes involved often relate to the metabolism of intracellular nucleic acids, their detection and signalling pathways, contributing to excessive IFN-I production or signalling. Features usua

Influence of Drying Condition and Other Aspects on Recovery of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in the PN-EN 14561 Carrier Test.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a bacterium sensitive to desiccation. Its use in disinfectant testing methods is important given its association with hospital-acquired infections. According to PNEN 14561:2008, obtaining a sufficient number of P. aeruginosa cells on a glass test surface under clean conditions after the drying process is essential for evaluating the bactericidal effectiveness of disinfectants. Does reducing the drying temperature of glass carriers contaminated with P. aeruginosa under clean conditions from the standard-recommended 37°C ± 1°C to 24°C ± 1°C improve bacterial recovery af

Exponentially tighter bounds on limitations of quantum error mitigation.

INTRODUCTION: The reported incidence of pediatric facial fractures is relatively low, within age limits of up to 5 years, whereas prevalence increases in children and adolescents. Considering the active growth that takes place in children, maxillofacial trauma can have deleterious effects if it involves growth centers present in the facial region and may lead to disability, morbidity as well as major financial consequences linked to the surgical procedures and hospital stay. AIM OF THE STUDY: The present study aimed to evaluate the relative frequency of maxillofacial traumatic injuries in the

Development of chilblain lesions during the COVID-19 pandemic is strongly associated with cold weather: a retrospective analysis of patients from a single centre in the USA.

This study aimed to retrospectively investigate the association between chilblain lesions and SARS-CoV-2 infection. Our results demonstrate a stronger and more significant association between incidence of chilblain cases and monthly temperature compared with incidence of SARS-CoV-2 infection. These results suggest cold weather was an important risk factor for developing chilblains during the COVID-19 pandemic.
