Locomotion in Virtual Reality (VR) is a key factor in determining user immersion and comfort. Thus, various locomotion methods in VR while seated have been explored. While controller-based seated locomotion is widely used due to its simplicity and low physical effort, it often lacks embodied motion cues, reducing immersion. On the other hand, seated walking-in-place (WIP) techniques enhance immersion through body-based interaction but can introduce significant physical fatigue. In this paper, we propose Leg-swing, a novel foot-based seated VR locomotion interface designed to balance immersion

When designing a haptic interface, simplicity is crucial to avoid negative effects caused by excessive weight and complexity. Using multimodal information, haptic illusions, and providing context are known to create simpler interfaces. We have previously proposed the use of single overlapped vibrotactile stimulation (SOVS) for presenting spatiotemporal tactile perception, a method that simultaneously presents overlapped waveforms to multiple body parts. There, the acceleration measured from a person dribbling a basketball with an accelerometer positioned on the index finger and the floor was o

Rapid advancements in immersive communications and artificial intelligence have created a pressing demand for high-performance tactile sensing gloves capable of delivering high sensitivity and a wide sensing range. Unfortunately, existing tactile sensing gloves fall short in terms of user comfort and are ill-suited for underwater applications. To address these limitations, we propose a flexible hand gesture recognition glove (GRG) that contains high-performance micropillar tactile sensors (MPTSs) inspired by the flexible tube foot of a starfish. The as-prepared flexible sensors offer a wide wo

The cold pressor test (CPT) involves cold water immersion of either the upper or lower limb(s) and elicits increases in sympathetic nervous activity (SNA), heart rate (HR), and mean arterial pressure (MAP) via stimulation of pain and cutaneous thermoreceptors. Greater pain perception during the CPT is associated with greater increases in SNA and more robust physiological responses. Due to potential differential sensitivity to both painful and thermal stimuli between upper and lower limbs, as well as potential effects of total exposure area, it is unclear whether the choice of limb(s) in CPT pr

The cold-induced vasodilation (CIVD) response of the human body to Arctic-like environments helps delay or prevent cold injuries to peripheral regions, such as the hands and feet. To more comprehensively predict the thermal responses of these body regions to cold stress, here we extended our previously developed and validated anatomically accurate three-dimensional whole-body thermoregulatory human model by incorporating a new phenomenological formulation of the CIVD mechanism. In this formulation, we modulated the cyclic vasodilation and vasoconstriction flow of warm blood from the body core

Cold associated foot injuries, such as frostbite and trench foot (immersion foot) are relatively common in cold environments. The former is classified as a freezing cold injury, and the latter as a nonfreezing cold injury. Trench foot is sometimes misdiagnosed as frostbite, and rapid rewarming exacerbates the condition. This paper aims to help differentiate between frostbitten foot and trench foot. This study included patients with frostbitten foot or trench foot treated at our hospital between December 2005 and May 2023. The differences in sex, age, month of injury, conditions at the time of

Over the 5-year surveillance period, from July 2019 through June 2024, the crude incidence rate of any cold weather injury was 31.1 per 100,000 person-years (p-yrs) for the active component and 6.4 per 100,000 persons for the reserve component of the U.S. Armed Forces. From July 2023 through June 2024, a total of 456 members of the active (n=403) and reserve (n=53) components of the U.S. Armed Forces had at least 1 cold weather injury. During the 2023-2024 cold season, the rates of any cold weather injury increased slightly for the active (31.1 per 100,000 p-yrs) and reserve (6.4 per 100,000 p

Cold injuries are a predictable and preventable threat. Continuous surveillance is essential to prevent cold weather injuries and mitigate their adverse impacts on military operations. Military training and combat operations require continued emphasis on effective cold weather injury prevention strategies and adherence to relevant policies and procedures to protect service members against such injuries. For all active component service members (ACSM), the rate of cold weather injuries in 2022-2023 decreased by 15.2% compared to the preceding cold season. The decrease was most pronounced in the

Recent studies have demonstrated that muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) responses to isometric exercise differs between active and inactive limbs. Whether limb-dependent responses are characteristic of responses to the cold pressor test (CPT) remains to be established. Therefore, we tested the hypothesis that CPT-induced MSNA responses differ between affected and unaffected limbs such that MSNA in the affected lower limb is greater than MSNA responses in the contralateral lower limb and the upper limb. Integrated peroneal MSNA (microneurography) was measured in young healthy individuals

BACKGROUND: Cold-induced vasodilation (CIVD) is a phenomenon that refers to a paradoxical increase in finger temperature that sometimes occurs during cold exposure. The aim of this study was to compare CIVD responses between women and men, during exposure to different environmental conditions.
METHODS: Seven men and seven women participated in a matched controlled study consisting of a familiarization protocol followed by three experimental sessions (cool (10.8 °C WBGT), thermoneutral (17.2 °C WBGT), and hot (27.2 °C WBGT)). In each session, participants were asked to immerse their left hand

BACKGROUND: Deficient endogenous pain modulation has been implicated in the development and exacerbation of chronic orofacial pain. To date, relatively little is known regarding the function of the endogenous pain modulation in patients with burning mouth syndrome (BMS). This case-control study investigated endogenous pain modulation in women with BMS.
METHODS: Conditioned pain modulation (CPM) was assessed upon temporal summation (TSP) of thermal pain. Forty female subjects, 20 BMS patients and 20 age-matched control subjects, were included in a 2 session-protocol. Mechanical and thermal pai

PURPOSE: The cold pressor test (CPT) is a clinical pain research method used to measure cold pain tolerance. During this test, participants immerse an extremity (ie, hand or foot) into cold water for as long as tolerable. The duration of the test (traditionally up to an experimentally imposed cut-off at 2 minutes) indicates the amount of cold pain tolerance by the participant. Prior research studies have investigated cold pain tolerance in patients with chronic pain. However, few of these studies have used survival analysis, which allows for proper handling of data censoring and is therefore,

Persistent pain despite satisfactory disease treatment is frequent in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and spondyloarthritis (Spa) and may result from specific changes in central pain processing. We assessed these mechanisms further by systematically comparing thermal pain thresholds and conditioned pain modulation (CPM) between patients with active RA or Spa and healthy controls. We included 50 patients with RA and 50 patients with Spa and 100 age-matched and sex-matched controls. Heat and cold pain thresholds (HPT-CPT) were measured on the dominant forearm, and CPM was assessed by applying conditio

NEW FINDINGS: What is the central question of this study? Does recreational cold exposure result in cold sensitivity and is this associated with endothelial dysfunction and impaired sensory thermal thresholds? What is the main finding and its importance? Previous cold exposure was correlated with cold sensitivity of the foot, which might indicate the development of a subclinical non-freezing cold injury. Endothelial function and thermal detection were not impaired in cold-sensitive individuals; therefore, further research is required to understand the pathophysiology of subclinical and clinica

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of cold exposure discontinuation on local cold tolerance of older retired female haenyeos in Korea. A total of 30 older women participated in this study: older retired haenyeos (89 ± 4 y in age, N = 10), active haenyeos (current divers) (75 ± 4 y, N = 10), and age-matched non-divers (75 ± 6 y, N = 10). Our criterion for local cold tolerance was cold-induced vasodilation (CIVD) of the finger. Active haenyeos showed greater local cold tolerance in terms of higher minimum temperature of the left finger during immersion and recovery t
