Efficacy and security of transcutaneous closure for secondary defect of interatrial septum (DIAS) in 299 patients, using occluders, were studied. Cardiac dysrythmia was the most frequent complication--in 10 (3.3%) patients, the apparatus shift was noted in 4 (1.3%), in 1 (0.3%)--the air embolism of right parts of the heart have occurred. In 289 (98.2%) patients normalization of right parts of heart was achieved. In 84.4% of patients the absence of a residual shunt immediately after the procedure was observed, before the check-out from the hospital--in 89.2%, and in 6 mo--in 97.7%. Transcutaneo

Cerebral venous air embolism is a relatively rare condition that arises from iatrogenic or traumatic introduction of air into the venous system. We describe the ultrasonographic findings in a 1-day-old infant with iatrogenic retrograde cerebral venous air embolism, which to our knowledge, is the earliest case reported in the literature to date. This case highlights the role of cerebral ultrasonography in the detection and surveillance of cerebral venous air embolism in neonates.

Postmortem imaging consists in the non-invasive examination of bodies using medical imaging techniques. However, gas volume quantification and the interpretation of the gas collection results from cadavers remain difficult. We used whole-body postmortem multi-detector computed tomography (MDCT) followed by a full autopsy or external examination to detect the gaseous volumes in bodies. Gases were sampled from cardiac cavities, and the sample compositions were analyzed by headspace gas chromatography-mass spectrometry/thermal conductivity detection (HS-GC-MS/TCD). Three categories were defined a

BACKGROUND: Sinus pericranii is a rare, usually asymptomatic condition that is characterized by an abnormal communication between the intra- and extracranial venous drainage pathways. The etiology is unknown but both congenital and post-traumatic etiologies have been proposed. Treatment is primarily surgical but newer minimally invasive endovascular approaches have been reported and is indicated due to cosmesis, hemorrhage, and air embolism.
ILLUSTRATIVE CASE: We present a case of an 11-month-old boy having sinus pericranii, who was referred for a slowly growing tumor located frontally in the

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), i. e. breathing pure oxygen at elevated ambient pressure, remains the gold standard of care in treating air or gas embolism and decompression illness. Guidelines are less clear on the value of HBOT in acute management of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning or clostridial necrosis. To evaluate the evidence of clinical efficacy of HBOT we performed a systematic literature review. Part 1 assesses acute indications such as air or gas embolism, decompression sickness, CO-poisoning, clostridialmyonecrosis, necrotizing problem wounds, acute traumatic wounds and arterial r

With the increasing incidence of blast injury, the research on its mechanisms and protective measures draws more and more attention. Blast injury has many characteristics different from general war injuries or trauma. For example, soldiers often have various degrees of visceral injury without significant surface damage, combined injuries and arterial air embolism. Researchers in China began to investigate blast injury later than the United States and Sweden, but the development is so fast that lots of achievements have been gained, including the development of biological shock tube, the mechan

The present study reports the case of an adult patient with non-traumatic acute paraplegia following a computed tomography (CT)-guided automated cutting needle biopsy (ACNB). Multiple nodules and masses were revealed on performing chest radiography and CT on a 45-year-old man. In order to make a pathological diagnosis, a CT-guided biopsy using an automatic cutting needle was performed. However, 10 min after the biopsy, a weakness of the lower extremities occurred, and the patient collapsed to the ground, albeit with clear consciousness. Spinal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) performed subsequ

X-ray is the most common, basic and essential imaging method used in forensic medicine. It serves to display and localize the foreign objects in the body and helps to detect various traumatic and pathological changes. X-ray imaging is valuable in anthropological assessment of an individual. X-ray allows non-invasive evaluation of important findings before the autopsy and thus selection of the optimal strategy for dissection. Basic indications for postmortem X-ray imaging in forensic medicine include gunshot and explosive fatalities (identification and localization of projectiles or other compo

PURPOSE: To describe a case of intraoperative mortality because of air embolism during resection of a choroidal melanoma by pars plana vitrectomy.
METHODS: Retrospective interventional case report.
RESULTS: A 69-year-old man died unexpectedly at the time of pars plana vitrectomy. The operative technique involved the use of high-pressure air (60 mmHg) in the presence of traumatically exposed choroidal vasculature. Autopsy revealed a large air embolus in the right ventricle, which resulted in sudden cardiovascular collapse.
CONCLUSION: Air embolism is a rare complication of ophthalmic surgery

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to explore whether postmortem hemorrhage can occur in brain tissue using rabbit models.
METHODS: The rabbits killed by air embolism were randomly divided into the horizontal-position group and the upside-down group. Autopsy was performed after 48 hours, and the brains were investigated with macroscopic assessment and histologic examination.
RESULTS: Macroscopically, congestion of vessels on the surface of the brain was identified in all the subjects in both groups. Microscopically, the presence of multifocal extravascular red blood cell aggregation was ob

The progress in quality and availability of imaging studies has made them an invaluable part of the clinical diagnostic process, so much so that the forensic medical community had to acknowledge their importance and to implement them in death investigations. Since 2011 roughly 200 post-mortem radiographic examinations were conducted, mostly followed by full autopsies. Four of those cases are given as an example of the benefits and limitations of these methods. A review of the literature and our experience so far, show that computed tomography provides better visualization and 3D reconstruction

Systemic air embolism is known to rarely complicate blunt chest trauma. However, cerebral infarction caused by air emboli possibly originating from a traumatic pneumatocele has not been previously reported. We report a case of a 46-year-old woman who sustained blunt chest trauma with multiple rib and clavicular fractures, hemothorax and a huge, tense traumatic pneumatocele. She subsequently developed clinical and radiologic features of cerebral infarction. The cerebral infarct is likely to be secondary to cerebral air embolism originating from a traumatic pneumatocele.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is the use of 100% oxygen at pressures greater than atmospheric pressure. Today several approved applications and indications exist for HBOT. HBOT has been successfully used as adjunctive therapy for wound healing. Non-healing wounds such as diabetic and vascular insufficiency ulcers have been one major area of study for hyperbaric physicians where use of HBOT as an adjunct has been approved for use by way of various studies and trials. HBOT is also indicated for infected wounds like clostridial myonecrosis, necrotising soft tissue infections, Fournier's gangre

A traditional method for internal jugular vein catheterization has been through the transjugular approach. These days, ultrasound-guided cannulation is the preferred mode because of the higher success and lower complication rates. Complications associated with the transjugular approach include neck hematoma caused by carotid artery puncture, pleural puncture leading to pneumothorax and air embolism. Thoracic duct injury is a rare complication of left internal jugular vein catheterization. This complication occurred in one of the patients in whom ultrasound-guided left internal jugular vein cat

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) arising from blast exposure during war is common, and frequently complicated by psychiatric morbidity. There is controversy as to whether mild TBI from blast is different from other causes of mild TBI. Anxiety and affective disorders such as Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and depression are common accompaniments of blast injury with a significant overlap in the diagnostic features of PTSD with post-concussive syndrome (PCS). This review focuses on this overlap and the effects of mild TBI due to bomb blast. Mild TBI may have been over diagnosed by late retros

BACKGROUND: Robotic-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (RALRP) is gaining popularity as a less traumatic and minimally invasive alternative to open radical retropubic prostatectomy (RRP). The aim of this study was to evaluate the incidence and grade of venous gas embolism (VGE) during RALRP compared with those during RRP using transoesophageal echocardiography (TOE).
METHODS: Fifty-two patients undergoing RRP (n=26) or RALRP (n=26) were consecutively enrolled. TOE was continuously applied during surgery and VGE was graded by an independent researcher.
RESULTS: The total incidence of

We report a case of traumatic Foley catheter placement and manipulation that resulted in a large, symptomatic, vena cava air embolism confirmed on computed tomography. To the best of our knowledge, our report represents the first case of a large, symptomatic, vena cava air embolism as a direct result of Foley catheter trauma. The included computed tomography images are unique in that they simultaneously show an improperly positioned Foley catheter and a large vena cava air embolism.
