Primary adenocarcinoma of the base of tongue: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Primary adenocarcinoma of the base of the tongue is an exceptionally rare malignancy, accounting for only a small proportion of oropharyngeal tumors. Diagnosis is challenging due to nonspecific symptoms and overlap with more common squamous cell carcinomas and salivary-type neoplasms. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 59-year-old Moroccan woman presenting with progressive dysphagia and referred otalgia. Nasofibroscopy revealed a right-sided base of the tongue mass extending to the vallecula. Magnetic resonance imaging confirmed a 28 × 19 mm lesion with ipsilateral cervica

[Lipoma on the Tongue].

Lipomas are benign mesenchymal tumors composed of mature adipose tissue. While common in the head and neck region, they are rarely found intraorally, representing 1-5 % of all tumors. The tongue is an uncommon site, despite isolated cases being reported. Clinically, lipomas present as slow-growing, soft, mobile nodules, including a shimmering yellowish appearance, beneath intact mucosa. Trauma and hereditary or metaplastic processes have been proposed as possible etiologic factors. Diagnosis is primarily clinical but must be confirmed histopathologically, especially due to overlapping features

Benign HPV-associated oral, oropharyngeal and sinonasal lesions in anatomical and oral pathology laboratories in Mexico.

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated benign epithelial lesions often exhibit overlapping clinical and histopathological features, making differential diagnosis challenging. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinicodemographic profiles of benign HPV-associated epithelial lesions diagnosed in anatomical and oral pathology laboratories. METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted and included cases diagnosed between January 2014 and April 2023 in six pathology laboratories. Rendered diagnoses were squamous papilloma (SP), condyloma acuminatum (CA), verruca vulgaris (VV

Resection and Reconstruction of Cribriform Adenocarcinoma of the Posterior One-third of the Tongue - A Case Report.

RATIONALE: Cribriform adenocarcinoma of the tongue and minor salivary glands (CATMSG) is a very rare salivary gland tumour mimicking adenoid cystic carcinoma (AdCC) or polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma, impacting treatment, prognosis and management. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 71-year-old female presented with a painful, bleeding left tongue mass. An external biopsy reported AdCC. DIAGNOSIS: A rebiopsy at our centre diagnosed the lesion as a classic CATMSG: cribriform architecture, pale overlapping nuclei and S-100/SMA positivity on immunohistochemistry. TREATMENT AND OUTCOMES: Based on the rev

Kawasaki disease following a pediatric scald burn: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Kawasaki disease (KD) is a systemic medium-vessel vasculitis of early childhood that, rarely, has been reported during the course of a pediatric burn. Because persistent fever, rash, and mucocutaneous changes overlap with the systemic inflammatory response to a burn wound, KD can go unrecognized, delaying the administration of intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG), which reduces the risk of coronary sequelae. CASE DESCRIPTION: A previously healthy 1-year-old boy sustained a 6% total body surface area deep partial-thickness scald to the left lower limb. The wound healed with conservati

Unusual Presentation of Orofacial Granulomatosis Leading to the Incidental Diagnosis of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis: A Case Report.

Orofacial granulomatosis (OFG) is a rare chronic inflammatory disorder characterized by non-caseating granulomatous inflammation involving the oral and maxillofacial region. Its heterogeneous clinical presentation and overlap with systemic granulomatous diseases often make diagnosis challenging. We report the case of a 54-year-old woman presenting with a four-month history of progressive mandibular mucosal hypertrophy mimicking an epulis-like lesion. Clinical examination revealed multiple pedunculated, firm, painless mucosal lesions localized to the anterior mandibular ridge in a fully edentul

Co-Occurrence of En Coup de Sabre, Parry-Romberg Syndrome, and Hemimasticatory Spasm: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: En coup de sabre (ECDS) and Parry-Romberg syndrome (PRS) are rare, localised scleroderma subtypes, often considered to be overlapping variants of morphea. Hemimasticatory spasm (HMS), a distinct rare neuromuscular disorder characterised by unilateral paroxysmal contraction of the jaw muscles, has rarely been reported in association with these conditions. CASE PRESENTATION: A 20-year-old man presented with a linear, cicatricial alopecic patch over the left parietal scalp, along with indurated and bound-down skin over the left cheek. This was followed by progressive depression and

Unusual denture-associated oral squamous papilloma with koilocytosis: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Oral squamous papilloma (OSP) is a benign epithelial proliferation commonly linked to human papillomavirus (HPV) and usually affects the palate, tongue and lips. Anterior mandibular alveolar mucosa involvement is uncommon, and overlap between koilocytic HPV-suggestive change and chronic denture-related trauma is rarely documented. A review of the literature indicates limited documentation of such overlapping clinicopathological features at this anatomical site. CASE PRESENTATION: A 49-year-old non-smoking male with absence of alcohol consumption history, presented with a 12-month

Ranula vs. Atypical Sublingual Branchial Cleft Cyst: A Case Report.

Congenital cystic lesions in the floor of the mouth in infants present significant diagnostic challenges owing to overlapping clinical and radiological features. We report a rare case of a one-year-old boy with a gradually enlarging, painless left sublingual swelling noticed since birth. Clinical examination revealed a soft, fluctuant 3 × 4 cm mass that did not move with deglutition or tongue protrusion, along with a small midline submental dimple. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) showed a well-defined, non-enhancing cystic lesion (4.1 × 2.1 × 3.9 cm) in the left sublingual space,

Solitary fibrous tumor of the oral cavity: a systematic review of the literature and a new clinicopathologic case report.

BACKGROUND: Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm of fibroblastic differentiation, originally described in the pleura and subsequently documented at multiple extrapleural sites. Oral involvement is uncommon and may be diagnostically challenging because of its variable clinical presentation and overlapping spindle-cell morphology. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We report a palatal SFT with clinical, imaging, histopathological and immunohistochemical correlation. In parallel, a systematic review was conducted in PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science for studies published between Janua

Genetic Landscape of Oral Carcinoma Cuniculatum and its Histological Mimics.

PURPOSE: Oral carcinoma cuniculatum (CC) is a rare variant of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), characterized by a well-differentiated, burrowing invasive pattern and minimal cellular atypia. Its diagnosis is challenging owing to its bland morphology, which makes differentiation from non-neoplastic lesions difficult on biopsy. Despite this, CC often requires distinction from conventional OSCC, even in surgical specimens. Histological overlap with conventional OSCC suggests a continuous spectrum of diseases. To clarify the genetic identity of pure CC, we analyzed 23 cases of OSCC with burrow

Benign and Malignant Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumors of the Oral Cavity: Two-Case Series Emphasizing Diagnostic Challenges.

Background: Peripheral nerve sheath tumors of the oral cavity are rare and encompass both benign and malignant entities. Differentiating between these lesions remains challenging due to overlapping clinical and histopathological characteristics. Case presentation: We present two cases illustrating the biological spectrum of peripheral nerve sheath tumors in the oral cavity. The first case involves a 76-year-old male with a recurrent lower lip lesion initially diagnosed as benign, which progressed to a high-grade malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST). The second case describes a 20-ye

Focal Leptomeningeal Metastasis Mimicking Inflammatory Lesion: Role of Serial MRI and MR Spectroscopy.

BACKGROUND: Leptomeningeal metastasis (LM) is a rare and severe complication of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), occurring when cancer cells spread to the meninges and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) compartment. Diagnosing LM is challenging due to nonspecific clinical symptoms and routine magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings that show meningeal enhancement along the cerebral sulci, which can resemble inflammatory, infectious, or autoimmune conditions. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this case presentation was to illustrate the diagnostic challenges of LM and the role of advanced MRI, and we present

Dural arteriovenous fistulas of the anterior condylar confluence involving the anterior condylar vein within the hypoglossal canal: Two case reports.

BACKGROUND: Dural arteriovenous fistulas (DAVFs) of the anterior condylar confluence (ACC) are rare vascular lesions at the skull base, often characterized by complex venous anatomy and variable clinical presentations. Their symptoms may overlap with those of cavernous sinus (CS) DAVFs, leading to potential misdiagnosis. Advanced imaging techniques and individualized treatment approaches are essential for accurate diagnosis and effective management. CASE DESCRIPTION: We present two cases of ACC DAVFs successfully treated with transvenous embolization (TVE). The first case involved a patient w

Extranasopharyngeal Angiofibroma in the Tongue: A Case Report With Literature Review.

Angiofibroma is a rare, benign vascular tumor traditionally associated with the nasopharynx of adolescent males. In contrast, extranasopharyngeal angiofibromas (ENAs) exhibit a wider demographic distribution and may arise in diverse anatomical sites. We report a case involving a 45 year-old woman presenting with a 4 month history of a mass located on the lateral border of the anterior tongue. Complete excision under local anesthesia was performed. Histopathological analysis demonstrated a proliferation of irregular vascular channels lined by benign endothelial cells, set within a fibrovascular

A Rare Case of Lipidized Fibrous Histiocytoma of the Oral Cavity.

Benign fibrous histiocytoma (FH) is a common cutaneous tumor that rarely occurs in the oral cavity. Lipidized FH is an uncommon variant characterized by abundant foam cells in collagenized stroma. To our knowledge, only a single case of oral lipidized FH affecting the tongue has been reported. We examine a case of lipidized FH in the buccal mucosa of a patient presenting with a gradually enlarging, pedunculated lesion measuring up to 26 mm. A histological examination revealed a well-marginated but unencapsulated tumor with a Grenz zone, hyalinized stroma, and central foam cell aggregation. Imm

Amyopathic Dermatomyositis Presenting With Oral Mucocutaneous Lesion and No Muscle Involvement in an Elderly Woman: A Mimicry of Fungal Infection and Eczema.

Amyopathic dermatomyositis (ADM) is a rare subtype of dermatomyositis defined by characteristic cutaneous findings without clinical or laboratory evidence of muscle involvement for at least six months. Although lacking myopathy, patients remain at risk for systemic complications, particularly rapidly progressive interstitial lung disease (RP-ILD) in the presence of anti-melanoma differentiation-associated gene 5 (MDA5) antibodies, as well as autoimmune overlap and malignancy. Diagnostic recognition may be delayed due to subtle clinical features and non-specific biopsy results. We report a 76-y

Comparative Pilot Study of Chronic Hyperplastic Candidiasis and Atypical Epithelial Proliferation With Candida Utilizing p53, p16, CD44, and OCT4 Immunohistochemistry.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic hyperplastic candidiasis (CHC) has a controversial potential role in the carcinogenesis of oral epithelium. In addition, histological overlap between CHC and atypical epithelial proliferation with Candida (AEPC) may cause a diagnostic dilemma. In this pilot study, potential premalignant markers including tumor suppressor gene proteins p53 and p16, and cancer stem cell markers CD44 and OCT4, were investigated in CHC and AEPC with benign and malignant validation groups. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 20 tongue lesions were identified, with 5 cases of each: benign valida

A case of Schöpf-Schulz-Passarge syndrome presented with widespread apocrine hidrocystomas showing variable clinical features.

Dear Editor, Genodermatoses are usually diagnosed in early childhood but diagnosis may be delayed in rare cases. Schöpf-Schulz-Passarge syndrome (SSPS) first described in 1971 is a rare type of autosomal recessive ectodermal dysplasia characterized by palmoplantar keratoderma, periocular and eyelid apocrine hidrocystomas, hypodontia, hypotrichosis, and nail dystrophy (1). Fewer than 40 cases have been reported up to 2018 (2) and the number has slightly increased with subsequent case reports. We report here a 73-year-old male patient whose parents were third-degree cousins presented to dermatol

Lymphangioma Circumscriptum of the Tongue in Paediatric Patients: A Clinic-Pathological and Immunohistochemical Study With High-Tech Protocol and Comprehensive Literature Analysis.

PURPOSE: Vascular anomalies (VAs) are a heterogeneous group of congenital disorders characterized by variable clinical presentation, biological behaviour, and therapeutic response. The classification system developed by the International Society for the Study of Vascular Anomalies (ISSVA) is currently the global standard, categorizing VAs based on histopathological features, hemodynamic, and clinical progression. Lymphatic malformations (LMs), including Lymphangioma Circumscriptum (LC)-a localized and often superficial variant-are stratified into macrocystic, microcystic, or mixed subtypes. De
