BACKGROUND: Isolated mechanical tricuspid valve replacement (mTVR) is uncommon, early mortality is reported to be high, and little is known regarding the long-term outcome. We sought to evaluate the long-term outcome of mTVR.
METHODS: From 1980 to 2007, isolated mTVR was performed in 64 patients (33 men) at our institution; the median age was 45.5 years (6-71 years). BACKGROUND: European and Swiss guidelines recommend hepatocellular carcinoma surveillance of high-risk patients every 6 months using ultrasound (US), with/without α-fetoprotein (AFP). Other surveillance strategies are available, but evidence of their comparative cost-effectiveness is lacking. This study evaluated the cost-effectiveness of current hepatocellular carcinoma surveillance strategies in Switzerland, including the novel GAAD (gender [biological sex], age, α-fetoprotein, protein induced by vitamin K absence or antagonist-II [PIVKA-II]) serum-based algorithm in high-risk patients.
