The history of the Japanese Society for Neuro-infectious Diseases: Foundation, objectives, and legacy.

The Japanese Research Group for Neuro-infectious Diseases was founded in August 1996, and by 2004 it had evolved into the Japanese Society for Neuro-infectious Diseases. The Society focuses on neuroinfectious conditions (e.g., encephalitis/encephalopathy, myelitis, and meningitis), providing a venue for academic presentations and exchanges. Clinical guidelines for major neurological infectious diseases are also published by the Society, in order to meet the social demands of each era. Although the threat of herpes simplex encephalitis has declined due to acyclovir's introduction, the frequency

The burden of medical contraindications to corneal donation: Time for review.

Corneal graft (keratoplasty) is the most common allograft in the world, but the imbalance between the number of donors and the number of patients waiting for transplants is abysmal on a global scale and varies enormously from one country to another. The risk of transmission of systemic diseases from donor to recipient is demonstrably low. In over 50 years and an estimated 2.5 million transplants, only 8 cases of rabies, 2 cases of hepatitis B and 2 cases of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) have been documented. Conversely, other cases of rabies, HIV, hep C, hep B and CJD have not been transmitt

High Detection Frequency of Vaccine-Associated Polioviruses and Non-Polio Enteroviruses in the Stools of Asymptomatic Infants from the Free State Province, South Africa.

Enterovirus (EV) infections are widespread and associated with a range of clinical conditions, from encephalitis to meningitis, gastroenteritis, and acute flaccid paralysis. Knowledge about the circulation of EVs in neonatal age and early infancy is scarce, especially in Africa. This study aimed to unveil the frequency and diversity of EVs circulating in apparently healthy newborns from the Free State Province, South Africa (SA). For this purpose, longitudinally collected faecal specimens (May 2021-February 2022) from a cohort of 17 asymptomatic infants were analysed using metagenomic next-gen

Ocular inflammation in tsutsugamushi disease - a case report.

A 64-year-old male, working at a mountain site in Taitung County, suffered from primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) post trabeculectomy with well-controlled intraocular pressure (IOP) in both eyes (OU). He presented with headache accompanied by red eyes (OU) for 10 days. Physical examination revealed fever up to 38.2°C, neck stiffness, one eschar at the left forearm and another at the left ankle. Abnormal laboratory data indicated bacterial infection with central nervous system involvement. Ophthalmic examination showed elevated IOP, moderate conjunctival congestion, subconjunctival hemorrhage,

Typhus group Rickettsia community-acquired bacterial central nervous system infections: We must think outside the box!

Typhus group rickettsiosis (TGR), caused by Rickettsia typhi and Rickettsia prowazekii, are globally distributed vector-borne diseases with increasing cases. Diagnosis is usually clinical, confirmed by seroconversion of IgG antibodies. Human infection occurs in diverse geographic areas with some developing CNS infection characterized by fever, headache, meningismus, and/or focal signs - usually beyond the first week of initial symptomatology. Seizures and other CNS manifestations have been observed. When untreated, infection may result in neurologic sequelae and even death. This study presents

Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Prediction of Sensorineural Hearing Loss in Patients with Neuroinfections.

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may be useful in detecting labyrinthitis and thereby predicting the development of sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) in adults with central nervous system (CNS) infections. We therefore investigated the coherence between brain MRI and SNHL among adults with CNS infections. METHODS: Twenty-eight patients with bacterial or viral meningitis, viral encephalitis, or Lyme neuroborreliosis, who had a brain MRI during the acute disease and pure-tone audiometry at follow-up, were included. Neuroradiologists were blinded to the audiometric outcome when ratin

Diagnostic Challenges of Lyme Co-infections: Lessons From a Lyme and Herpes Simplex Virus-1 (HSV-1) Cocktail.

Lyme borreliosis (LB) is a complex tick-borne illness with diverse presentations. We report a case of LB meningitis with herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1) co-infection in a 55-year-old woman initially presenting with isolated facial nerve palsy. This case illustrates the multifaceted diagnostic challenges associated with Lyme co-infections. It emphasizes the need for thorough testing to identify all potential pathogens and the importance of differentiating between true co-infection and incidental HSV-1 reactivation. Understanding these complexities is crucial for guiding appropriate treatment dec

Rare Presentation of Pediatric Nervous System Lyme Disease: A Case Report.

Lyme disease is a multisystem infectious disease. It is caused by the dissemination of Borrelia spirochetes after a tick bite. It has various manifestations across different age groups. Commonly involved organs are the skin, joints, and nervous system. Nervous system Lyme disease has a wide spectrum of manifestations. While facial nerve palsy and subacute meningitis are commonly observed in the pediatric population, our case report reveals an uncommon manifestation of the nervous system Lyme disease. A four-year-old patient exhibited mood changes, behavioral issues, and generalized tonic-cloni

Diagnostic Challenges of Lyme Neuroborreliosis in Inpatient Neurology: A Case Series.

Lyme disease is a multisystem disorder transmitted through the Ixodes tick and is most commonly diagnosed in northeastern and mid-Atlantic states, Wisconsin, and Minnesota, though its disease borders are expanding in the setting of climate change. Approximately 10%-15% of untreated Lyme disease cases will develop neurologic manifestations of Lyme neuroborreliosis (LNB). Due to varying presentations, LNB presents diagnostic challenges and is associated with a delay to treatment. We discuss three cases of LNB admitted to our referral center in a traditionally low-incidence state to highlight cli

Lyme Neuroborreliosis in the Context of Dementia Syndromes.

Lyme disease (LD) can affect the skin, joints, heart, and nervous system as a multisystemic condition. The cause of the illness is the spirochete of the genus Borrelia. These pathogens can affect the skin, joints, heart, and nervous system. Lyme neuroborreliosis (LNB) is the term for the disease, which occurs when the nervous system gets involved. Regarding geographical distribution, LNB is more prevalent in Europe than in North America. The most significant change in pathogenesis is inflammation of the central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral nervous system (PNS). Furthermore, clinically,
