Group B streptococcus colonization in pregnancy and neonatal outcomes: a three-year monocentric retrospective study during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is a major cause of sepsis and meningitis in newborns. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends to pregnant women, between 35 and 37 weeks of gestation, universal vaginal-rectal screening for GBS colonization, aimed at intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis (IAP). The latter is the only currently available and highly effective method against early onset GBS neonatal infections. Since the onset of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the preventive measures implemented to mitigate the effects of SARS-CoV-2 infection led to

Surface protein distribution in Group B Streptococcus isolates from South Africa and identifying vaccine targets through in silico analysis.

Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is a major cause of pneumonia, sepsis, and meningitis in infants younger than 3 months of age. Furthermore, GBS infection in pregnant women is associated with stillbirths and pre-term delivery. It also causes disease in immunocompromised adults and the elderly, but the highest incidence of the disease occurs in neonates and young infants. At this time, there are no licensed vaccines against GBS. Complete GBS genome sequencing has helped identify genetically conserved and immunogenic proteins, which could serve as vaccine immunogens. In this study, in silico reverse

The Streptococcus agalactiae LytSR two-component regulatory system promotes vaginal colonization and virulence in vivo.

Streptococcus agalactiae (or group B Streptococcus, GBS) is a leading cause of neonatal sepsis and meningitis globally. To sense and respond to variations in its environment, GBS possesses multiple two-component regulatory systems (TCSs), such as LytSR. Here, we aimed to investigate the role of LytSR in GBS pathogenicity. We generated an isogenic lytS knockout mutant in a clinical GBS isolate and used a combination of phenotypic in vitro assays and in vivo murine models to investigate the contribution of lytS to the colonization and invasive properties of GBS. Deletion of the lytS gene in the

Group B Streptococcus vaginal colonisation throughout pregnancy is associated with decreased Lactobacillus crispatus and increased Lactobacillus iners abundance in the vaginal microbial community.

Group B Streptococcus (GBS) asymptomatically colonises the vagina of up to 40% of pregnant women and can transmit to neonates during birth, causing neonatal pneumonia, sepsis, meningitis, and significant mortality. Vaginal GBS colonisation can be attributed to a range of host and bacterial factors, which may include the composition of the vaginal microbial community. There are few studies that have examined the vaginal community composition in relation to GBS colonisation throughout pregnancy. Here, we performed 16S rRNA sequencing (V3-V4) on vaginal swabs from women at 24- and 36-weeks' gesta

Burden of infant group B Streptococcus disease and impact of maternal screening and antibiotic prophylaxis in Ontario, Canada: a population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Group B Streptococcus (GBS) significantly contributes to neonatal sepsis and meningitis, with varying disease rates reported globally and limited population-based data. We estimated infant GBS disease burden in Ontario, Canada and assessed the association of maternal GBS screening (35-37 weeks' gestation) and intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis (IAP) provision with infant disease rates. METHODS: Our population-based cohort study included pregnant individuals and their offspring from April 2012 to March 2018, utilising the provincial birth registry linked to health administrative da

Group B streptococcal infections in pregnancy and early life.

SUMMARYBacterial infections with Group B Streptococcus (GBS) are an important cause of adverse outcomes in pregnant individuals, neonates, and infants. GBS is a common commensal in the genitourinary and gastrointestinal tracts and can be detected in the vagina of approximately 20% of women globally. GBS can infect the fetus either during pregnancy or vaginal delivery resulting in preterm birth, stillbirth, or early-onset neonatal disease (EOD) in the first week of life. The mother can also become infected with GBS leading to postpartum endometritis, and rarely, maternal sepsis. An invasive GBS

Comparison of lateral tail vein and retro-orbital venous sinus as routes of inoculation to study Group B streptococcal systemic infection.

UNLABELLED: Murine models are commonly used to understand pathogen and host determinants of systemic infection. While these models have proven beneficial for uncovering bacterial mechanisms required for progression to invasive disease, it can be challenging to draw comparisons across studies as several different routes of infection are standardly used for these experiments. In this study, one of the leading bacterial meningeal pathogens, Streptococcus agalactiae, or Group B Streptococcus (GBS), was used to compare experimental outcomes of two commonly used routes of hematogenous infection, lat

Bacterial meningitis in a quaternary NICU: A multiyear retrospective study.

Bacterial meningitis causes significant morbidity and mortality in infants. Lumbar punctures are often deferred until the results of blood cultures are known and sometimes not considered, making this population susceptible to a missed diagnosis. There are few studies describing the epidemiology of neonatal meningitis in quaternary neonatal intensive care unit settings. We describe the epidemiology of meningitis in a level IV neonatal intensive care unit; compare pathogens and rates of concordant bacteremia between infants with and without neurosurgical (NS) devices. Retrospective review of inf

Invasive infections by group A Streptococcus infections in Brazil: a pediatric case series.

OBJECTIVE: Group A Streptococcus (GAS) are Gram-positive cocci that colonize the nasopharynx and/or skin and in rare cases may cause severe invasive infections. Although these infections decreased during the COVID-19 pandemic, some countries have observed an increased number of invasive GAS (iGAS) diseases in recent years. The objective of this study was to describe a series of iGAS diseases in a referral hospital for the treatment of pediatric infectious disease in Minas Gerais State, Brazil, between September 2022 and August 2023. The data were obtained from medical records, and GAS was isol

Invasive meningococcal disease in older adults: current perspectives and call for action.

PURPOSE: Invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) is a devastating condition. While most attention is directed towards disease in children and adolescents, IMD poses an important cause of morbidity and mortality in adults ≥60 years. While immunization is a critical component of healthy ageing strategies, meningococcal immunization is not routinely offered to older adults. The aim of this review was to summarize clinical and epidemiological aspects of IMD and available immunization strategies, with a particular focus on disease in older individuals, to emphasize the importance of this rather neglec

Prediction by genetic MATS of 4CMenB vaccine strain coverage of invasive meningococcal serogroup B isolates circulating in Taiwan between 2003 and 2020.

Neisseria meningitidis serogroup B (NmB) strains have diverse antigens, necessitating methods for predicting meningococcal serogroup B (MenB) vaccine strain coverage. The genetic Meningococcal Antigen Typing System (gMATS), a correlate of MATS estimates, predicts strain coverage by the 4-component MenB (4CMenB) vaccine in cultivable and non-cultivable NmB isolates. In Taiwan, 134 invasive, disease-causing NmB isolates were collected in 2003-2020 (23.1%, 4.5%, 5.2%, 29.8%, and 37.3% from individuals aged ≤11 months, 12-23 months, 2-4 years, 5-29 years, and ≥30 years, respectively). NmB isolates
