Kidney Biopsy in Patients With Mechanical Ventilation: A Report of Ten Cases.

In patients with mechanical ventilation or critically ill patients there are various mechanisms for kidney function impairment, ranging from systemic disease to intrinsic kidney etiology. Kidney biopsy is the study of choice for the diagnosis, treatment decision and prognosis of kidney disease. Ten critically ill patients on mechanical ventilation underwent kidney biopsy using 2 kidney biopsy techniques: the standard technique (prone position) in 5 patients and the lateral position (left lateral decubitus position) in 5 patients. Most of our patients had a kidney histological diagnosis seconda

CRISPR/Cas9-mediated uORF engineering enhances tanshinone biosynthesis in Salvia miltiorrhiza.

Tanshinone accumulation serves as a critical determinant of medicinal value in Salvia miltiorrhiza cultivars. Precise fine-tuning of tanshinone biosynthesis while preserving elite agronomic traits remains a pivotal challenge in molecular breeding. Here, we report, for the first time, the successful application of CRISPR/Cas9-mediated upstream open reading frame (uORF) editing in medicinal plants to enhance the production of specialized metabolites. Five evolutionarily conserved uORFs identified in the 5' leader sequence of the key diterpene synthase gene SmCPS1 were strategically edited to mod

Artificial intelligence-curated repository of gene-encoded natural diverse components from herbal medicines.

Natural components, evolved to help organisms adapt and defend against threats, are also vital sources for drug discovery due to their diverse and potent bioactivities. In the present work, we proposed the Gene-encoded Natural Diverse Components Repository (GNDC, https://cbcb.cdutcm.edu.cn/gndc/), a primary and most extensive database dedicated to cataloging diverse natural components. GNDC currently catalogs over 234 million natural components that are organized into four specialized sub-databases: HerbalMDB for 2.32 million secondary metabolites, HerbalPDB for 229 million small peptides, Her

Beyond conventional therapies: Gut microbiota modulation and macromolecular drugs in the battle against cardiometabolic diseases.

Cardiometabolic diseases (CMDs) represent an ongoing major global health challenge, driven by complex interactions among genetic, environmental, microbiome-related, and other factors. While small-molecule drugs and lifestyle interventions can provide clinical benefits, they are possible to be constrained by the limited druggability of key target proteins, the potential risks of off-target effects, and difficulties in maintaining long-term adherence. In recent years, gut microbiota modulation and macromolecular drugs have emerged as promising therapeutic strategies. Gut microbiota modulation (e

Integrative chromosome-level genomics and metabolomics uncover regulatory networks linking monoterpenoid biosynthesis and glandular trichome formation in Mosla chinensis.

Xiangru, with Mosla chinensis (Mc, 2n = 18) and its considered cultivar M. chinensis 'Jiangxiangru' (McJ, 2n = 18) as original plants, is an annual herb of the Lamiaceae family, and is widely used as medicinal and edible plant due to its spleen strengthening function. However, absence of genomic resource impedes in-depth research towards Xiangru. In this study, the morphological characteristics and volatile organic compounds (VOC) contents of Mc and McJ were analyzed, showing higher trichome density and monoterpenoid accumulation obtained in Mc, whereas McJ possessed higher biomass. We assembl

A critical review of the evolution and interrelation of traumatic stress disorders.

Trauma is a complex and often contentious psychopathological construct. The term trauma has become ubiquitous within mental health literature and practice. It is often used interchangeably to describe the etiology and the reaction to it. In this article we describe its historical and contemporary conceptualization through a review of the disorders that claim a direct relation to traumatic events whether or not they are recognized by official psychiatric classification systems. We critically evaluate the extent to which current understandings of traumatic stress disorders capture the diversity

An examination of inpatient ward and secondary community care stay costs for individuals with complex mental health needs in the UK.

Some people with mental health problems have such high levels of complex clinical and/or risk needs that those needs cannot be adequately met within generic mental health services. To design health and social provisions to better serve these people's needs, it is necessary to first characterise the current provision. This study examines the cost element of this provision. This retrospective observational cohort study examined routinely collected healthcare service administrative data from a large UK-based NHS provider of community and hospital-based mental health services. Data were collected

Design of electroactive consortium synthesizing flora enables synergistic biomass-to-bioenergy conversion.

Efficient biomass-to-energy conversion is key to sustainable development. We engineered a dual-functional synthetic microbial communities(SMC) (Bacillus subtilis XJU-1, XJU-2, Bacillus cereus XJU-3, and Enterobacter hormaechei XJU-5) to simultaneously degrade marine biomass and generate electricity in microbial fuel cells (MFCs). Using porous nickel-molybdenum foam as the anode, the 2-L MFCs achieved 941.67 mV and 443.67 mW m-3. Multi-omics analyses showed that vitamin B6 and amino acid pathways boosted NADH/FADH2 production, while higher SDH and COX activities enhanced electron transfer. The

The combined influence of microbiome and soil environment contributes to the chemotype differentiation in Atractylodes lancea.

Atractylodes lancea, a traditional Chinese medicinal herb, is divided into two chemotypes based on the production of volatile bioactive compounds: the geo-authentic Maoshan chemotype (MSA, rich in atractylon and atractylodin) and the non-authentic Hubei chemotype (HBA, dominated by hinesol and β-eudesmol). However, the mechanisms underlying the differentiation of these chemotypes remain poorly understood. By sequencing analysis of wild and cultivated A. lancea samples from multiple provinces in China, we revealed that the genetic divergence into Maoshan-Dabie Mountains group (MA) and Qinling-T
