PURPOSE: To describe an unusual case of mandibular fracture after osseointegrated dental implant removal placed after inferior alveolar nerve transposition.
REPORT OF CASE: The patient underwent inferior nerve transposition for implant placement due to lack of interarch space. Two months after metal-ceramic crowns installation, the patient began to complain of pain in the region of the implant. In an attempt to remove the implant, there was a fracture of the implant, and only two third of it was removed, leaving only the apical portion of the implant in the mandible. The patient opted for the

Peripheral tissue inflammation or injury causes glutamate release from nociceptive axons, keratinocytes, and Schwann cells, resulting in thermal hypersensitivity. However, the detailed molecular mechanisms underlying glutamate-induced thermal hypersensitivity are unknown. The aim of this study was to clarify the involvement of peripheral transient receptor potential (TRP) TRP vanilloid 1 (TRPV1), TRP ankyrin 1 (TRPA1), and protein kinase C epsilon (PKCε) in glutamate-induced pain hypersensitivity. The amount of glutamate in the facial tissue was significantly increased 3 days after facial Comp

BACKGROUND: The invasive nature of the current methods for monitoring of intracranial pressure (ICP) has prevented their use in many clinical situations. Several attempts have been made to develop methods to monitor ICP non-invasively. The aim of this study is to assess the relationship between ultrasound-based non-invasive ICP (nICP) and invasive ICP measurement in neurocritical care patients.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: This was a prospective, single-cohort observational study of patients admitted to a tertiary neurocritical care unit. Patients with brain injury requiring invasive ICP monitoring

The lamina cribrosa (LC) is a multilayered, collagenous, sieve-like structure at the deep optic nerve head, and is presumed to be the primary site of axonal injury. According to biomechanical theory, intraocular pressure-induced posterior deformation of the LC causes blockage of axonal transport and alters the ocular blood flow, so that the axons of the retinal ganglion cells lead to apoptosis, which results in glaucomatous optic disc change. Although most of the research on the LC to date has been limited to experimental animal or histologic studies, the recent advances in optical coherence t

OBJECTIVE Microvascular decompression (MVD) is effective for the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia (TN), hemifacial spasm (HFS), and glossopharyngeal neuralgia. The transposition technique is the standard procedure to avoid adhesions and granuloma around the decompression site but is more complex and difficult to perform than the interposition technique. The authors describe a simple and safe MVD transposition procedure they call the "birdlime" technique, which uses a tissue glue-coated collagen sponge soaked with fibrin glue, and the results of this technique. METHODS The authors retrospectiv

INTRODUCTION: Increased intracranial pressure (ICP) is a significant neurological issue that may lead to permanent neurological sequelae. When evaluating patients with traumatic brain injury, it is crucial to identify those with high ICP in order to expedite ICP lowering measures and maintain adequate cerebral perfusion. Several measures are used to recognise patients with increased ICP including CT scan, MRI, ICP monitor, and lumbar puncture (LP). However, these tests can be invasive, associated with radiation exposure, contraindicated, or not readily available. Ultrasonography measurement of

This clinical report describes a relatively infrequent patient with inferior alveolar nerve damage caused by foreign material within the mandibular canal, which is one of the most severe complications of endodontic therapy. Although the circumstance is uncommon, it can have extremely unfavorable consequences for patients, such as anesthesia and paresthesia. In the present case, a patient suffered pain and severe paresthesia in the corresponding area after routine endodontic therapy. Several treatments were conducted to relieve the patient's symptoms, ranging from medication to tooth extraction

While it is recognized that aquaporin-4 (AQP4)-specific T cells and antibodies participate in the pathogenesis of neuromyelitis optica (NMO), a human central nervous system (CNS) autoimmune demyelinating disease, creation of an AQP4-targeted model with both clinical and histologic manifestations of CNS autoimmunity has proven challenging. Immunization of wild-type (WT) mice with AQP4 peptides elicited T cell proliferation, although those T cells could not transfer disease to naïve recipient mice. Recently, two novel AQP4 T cell epitopes, peptide (p) 135-153 and p201-220, were identified when s

BACKGROUND: There are few reports on hemiparesis caused by vascular medullary compression, which can occur because of dolichoectasia of the vertebrobasilar arterial system. In this article, we report a case of vertebral artery compression of the medulla oblongata in a 67-year-old woman.
CASE DESCRIPTION: The patient was hypertensive, and she developed hemiparesis and intermittent spasms over 5 years. These spasms had worsened during the last year. Cranial nerve magnetic resonance imaging showed compression of the medulla oblongata by the left vertebral artery. A motor evoked potential (MEP) e
