The role of TRPV1 in corneal wound healing under a thyroxine-induced TAO-like condition.

Thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO) is an autoimmune orbital disorder associated with proptosis, ocular surface exposure, and corneal complications that may impair corneal repair. Transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) is a calcium-permeable stress sensor involved in epithelial repair, inflammation, and stromal remodeling; however, its role in corneal wound healing under TAO-like ocular surface conditions remains unclear. In this study, a thyroxine (T4)-induced TAO-like condition was established in rats, followed by standardized alkali corneal injury to evaluate healing responses

Ocular and associated brain injuries caused by less-lethal kinetic impact projectiles: A systematic review.

Kinetic impact projectiles (KIPs), used by law enforcement and in crowd control, are "less-lethal" weapons designed to reduce injury risk. However, they can cause severe craniofacial trauma, particularly to the orbit, a vulnerable structure that may transmit impact forces to the brain. This systematic review evaluates ocular and orbital injuries caused by KIPs, focusing on associated brain injuries, sequelae, and forensic implications. A systematic review was conducted following PRISMA 2020 guidelines and registered in PROSPERO (CRD420261294742). PubMed, Scopus, and Embase were searched up to

Traumatic dislocation of the eye into the brain-a "harrowing" experience-a rare case report with literature review.

Traumatic dislocation of the eye into the cranial cavity is a rare phenomenon described in the literature. Trans-orbital penetrating brain injuries are significant injuries accounting for 0.4% of all head injuries. Agriculture farm-related injuries are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in the rural population. Cranio-orbito-facial injuries can occur with farming vehicles, equipment, heavy machinery, and animals. Challenges in managing these trans-orbital penetrating brain injuries include hemorrhagic contusion, loss of vision, meningitis, abscess formation, CSF leak, encephalocele

Finesse in Forehead Lifting-Asymmetric Ligament Release for Asymmetric Brow Ptosis.

BACKGROUND: Asymmetric brow ptosis presents a unique surgical challenge. It has been traditionally managed with full deep-plane release of the forehead retaining ligaments, which often leads to overcorrection or persistent asymmetry. This case series evaluates an approach using titrated asymmetric ligament release and selective fixation to address brow asymmetry while minimizing complications. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 50 consecutive patients (average age: 62.1 years) with preoperative brow asymmetry greater than 2 mm who underwent endoscopic brow lift between 2022 and

Orbital Apex Syndrome Secondary to Middle Cranial Fossa Meningocele: A Rare Pediatric Case.

BACKGROUND: Orbital apex syndrome (OAS) is a rare, sight-threatening condition caused by injury or compression of neurovascular structures in the orbital apex, which, depending on the underlying etiology, may even pose a life-threatening risk. Prompt recognition and intervention are essential to prevent permanent visual loss and systemic complications. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 10-year-old child presenting with acute left-sided proptosis, eyelid edema, ophthalmoplegia, and optic disc edema, following a history of orbital cellulitis and meningitis in early childhood. Imaging revealed a mi

Globe-sparing transorbital penetrating injury with sinonasal extension caused by a nail gun.

We report the case of a woman in her 40s who sustained a left transorbital penetrating injury caused by an accidentally discharged nail from a nail gun. On presentation, visual function was preserved despite visible medial canthal penetration. CT demonstrated a medial extraconal trajectory, adjacent to the medial rectus muscle, traversing the ethmoidal air cells and approaching the sphenoid sinus without intracranial involvement or optic nerve damage. Multidisciplinary management involving ophthalmology and otorhinolaryngology enabled controlled external extraction of the foreign body. A hook-

Traumatic Carotid-Cavernous Fistula in a Child with Nasal Penetrating Injury.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic penetrating carotid-cavernous fistula (CCF) is an uncommon complication of craniofacial trauma, particularly in pediatric patients. Prompt recognition is essential to prevent irreversible visual and neurological deficits. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a 2.5-year-old boy who sustained a penetrating nasal injury caused by a screwdriver. He initially presented with epistaxis and subsequently developed left-sided proptosis, chemosis, and restricted ocular motility. Early imaging studies were inconclusive, and orbital cellulitis was initially suspected. DIAGNOSIS AND MANAGE

Metallic clip removal 40 years after scleral encircling surgery for retinal detachment: A case report.

PURPOSE: To report our findings in a case in which a metallic clip used for scleral encircling surgery was accidentally detected and surgically removed more than 40 years after its use in the initial retinal detachment surgery. OBSERVATIONS: The patient was a 54-year-old woman who had undergone surgical treatment for a rhegmatogenous retinal detachment in both eyes during childhood. Her preoperative decimal best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 0.5 in the right eye and 0.01 in the left eye. Postoperatively, the BCVA improved to 1.0 in the right eye, but remained at 0.01 in the left eye. Dur

Kielland Rotational Forceps Delivery Reduces Ophthalmic Complications Compared to Nagele Non-Rotational Forceps Delivery.

OBJECTIVES: Non-rotational forceps delivery (NRFD) has a possibility of ophthalmic complications when applied in cases with an oblique sagittal suture. To overcome this and improve the success rate of forceps delivery, we have introduced Kielland rotational forceps delivery (KRFD) since 2016; however, reports about the ophthalmic complications of KRFD are limited. Here, we aimed to investigate the safety and availability of KRFD compared to NRFD. METHODS: We collected forceps delivery from April 2016 to August 2023, excluding cases using both forceps or ending in cesarean section. Cases were

Risk of mental health disorders following traumatic ocular and orbital injury.

PURPOSE: Traumatic ocular injuries may lead to short- and long-term psychiatric consequences; however, the risk of developing mental health disorders after such injuries is not well defined. This study aimed to determine the incidence rates of mental health disorders following traumatic ocular or orbital injury compared to matched controls. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, we used electronic health records from a federated database covering 20 years, through December 5, 2025. Patients with ocular or orbital trauma were matched by age, sex, and race to controls who underwent compreh

Unfolding tale of post-traumatic globe luxation into the ethmoid sinus: an unusual encounter in ophthalmology.

Traumatic displacement of the eyeball into the paranasal sinuses is an exceptionally uncommon sequelae following head injury, particularly when the orbit is the site of major impact. We present a case of a ruptured globe dislocation into the ethmoid sinus with extensive bilateral orbital fractures in a male in his early 20s, following a high-velocity motor vehicle (two-wheeler) road traffic accident 3 weeks ago. He also sustained a right optic canal fracture with encephalocele, which led to traumatic optic neuropathy. The case was managed through a multidisciplinary staged surgical approach. T

Determinants of loss to follow-up after eye-related emergency visits: A race-stratified analysis at a level I trauma center.

IMPORTANCE: Strict adherence to follow-up ophthalmic care after emergency department visits is critical not only for monitoring disease progression, assessing therapeutic response, and preventing avoidable complications, but also because ophthalmic examinations may provide one of the few opportunities to identify otherwise unrecognized systemic disease. OBJECTIVE: To identify variables associated with loss to follow-up (LTFU) care after emergency department ophthalmology consultations, and to characterize similarities and differences between self-reported race. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort s
