[Loss of eyeball and periorbital tissues due to craniofacial trauma: Clinical case].

BACKGROUND: Globe rupture constitutes a severe form of open-globe injury and carries a guarded prognosis with a risk of permanent visual loss. The loss of the eyeball entails functional, psychological, and social repercussions that require a comprehensive approach aimed at timely diagnosis, appropriate management, and patient rehabilitation. CLINICAL CASE: A 2-year and 1-month-old male patient was brought by his mother to the pediatric emergency department after sustaining craniofacial and ocular trauma caused by the impact of a 45 kg domestic gas tank striking his face while playing at home.

Hunting Firearm Induced Optic Nerve Transection.

Penetrating ocular trauma caused by firearms represents a severe ophthalmic emergency and is frequently associated with poor visual outcomes. We report the case of a 41-year-old man who presented with complete loss of visual acuity (no light perception) after a penetrating injury to the right eye sustained during a hunting accident involving a low-velocity firearm. Initial ophthalmic examination showed a full-thickness nasal scleral perforation with vitreous prolapse, mild corneal oedema, and limited fundus visualization due to dense vitreous haemorrhage. A relative afferent pupillary defect o

Association between concurrent orbital fracture and reduced glaucoma risk following ocular contusion.

PURPOSE/RELEVANCE: Ocular trauma is a recognized risk factor for glaucoma; however, how concurrent orbital injury modifies this risk remains poorly characterized. This study evaluates the long-term risk of glaucoma and traumatic glaucoma following ocular contusion (OC) and the impact of concurrent orbital fracture on these outcomes. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted using the TriNetX Research Network, which aggregates electronic health records from over 150 million patients across 112 healthcare organizations. We identified adults ≥18 years old with an OC and controls with n

Ophthalmological injuries in isolated orbital fractures: which patients need evaluation?

Orbital fractures are frequently associated with ophthalmological injuries, which range from minor irritation to vision-threatening trauma. This study was intended to identify predictive factors for ophthalmological injuries in patients with isolated orbital fractures, and to assess whether conventional assessment of facial trauma can reliably determine the need for specialist ophthalmological assessment. This prospective cohort study included adult patients with isolated orbital floor and/or medial wall fractures, who underwent standardised ophthalmological evaluation by an ophthalmologist. T

Advances in Eyelid Trauma Management: A Systematic Review of Surgical Strategies, Reconstructive Innovations, and Clinical Outcomes From 2000 to 2026.

Eyelids are vulnerable to trauma, leading to considerable morbidity because of impaired functionality, altered eyelid mechanics, and compromised cosmesis. In this regard, the purpose of the present systematic review is to provide comprehensive information on the prevalence of different types of eyelid trauma, treatment methods, and complications reported in the literature over the last 25 years (up to 2026). Specifically, a PRISMA 2020-based search strategy, conducted in accordance with the guidelines, was applied to the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases, identifying 1,330 relevant

Contrast sensitivity and quality of life after orbital decompression for dysthyroid optic neuropathy.

PURPOSE: To evaluate contrast sensitivity function in patients with thyroid eye disease (TED) associated compressive optic neuropathy (CON) who achieved full recovery of conventional visual function following three-wall orbital decompression and to evaluate its impact on vision-related quality of life. METHODS: In this prospective matched case-control study, 22 TED eyes (18 TED-CON, 4 TED-non-CON) were compared to 22 healthy eyes matched on age, sex, and refraction. All TED patients had recovered 10/10 best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), normal visual fields, and no OCT abnormalities after t

Chemotherapy-associated Optic Neuropathy in a Patient with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia and Hepatitis B: A Diagnostic Challenge.

Optic neuritis is a sight-threatening condition marked by inflammation or dysfunction of the optic nerve, typically presenting with sudden, often painful vision loss in one eye. While idiopathic and demyelinating forms are most common, optic nerve damage related to systemic chemotherapy remains an underreported but clinically significant entity. Patients undergoing intensive cancer treatment - particularly those with compromised immunity - are vulnerable to optic neuropathy from direct neurotoxic effects, opportunistic infections, or malignancy-related infiltration. We describe the case of a 3

Eye Loss, Orbital Sequelae, and Prosthetic Rehabilitation Following Crowd-Control Kinetic Impact Projectile Injuries: The Largest Civilian Cohort.

INTRODUCTION: During the 2019-2020 Chilean social unrest, massive police use of kinetic impact projectiles (KIPs) caused unprecedented severe ocular traumas, initially affecting over 460 individuals. We examined the largest civilian cohort with complete globe loss to characterize orbital/peri-orbital sequelae, analyze projectile-specific injury patterns, and assess factors affecting rehabilitation. METHODS: This retrospective cohort evaluated 57 individuals requiring ocular prostheses at Chile's national referral center (2019-2022). Sociodemographic, clinical, and prosthetic variables were an

Varicella-Zoster Virus and the Eye: Clinical Spectrum, Management, and Vaccination.

Varicella-Zoster Virus (VZV) is one of the most important pathogens in ophthalmology. Reactivation may involve the adnexa (blepharoconjunctivitis, pseudomembranous conjunctivitis), cornea (dendritic keratitis, nummular and necrotizing stromal keratitis, disciform endotheliitis, neurotrophic ulcers, mucous-plaque keratitis) and sclera (episcleritis, anterior scleritis). Uveal inflammation ranges from anterior uveitis-with iris atrophy, trabeculitis-induced glaucoma and complicated cataract-to posterior necrotizing syndromes: acute retinal necrosis in immunocompetent hosts and progressive outer

Towards credible digital twins for basic and preclinical research.

Atomoxetine (Strattera(R)) is a selective norepinephrine (noradrenaline) reuptake inhibitor that is not classified as a stimulant, and is indicated for use in patients with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Atomoxetine is effective and generally well tolerated. It is significantly more effective than placebo and standard current therapy and does not differ significantly from or is noninferior to immediate-release methylphenidate; however, it is significantly less effective than the extended-release methylphenidate formulation OROS(R) methylphenidate (hereafter referred to as osm

A novel rat model of neurotrophic keratopathy complicated with limbal stem cell deficiency induced by trigeminal ophthalmic branch injury.

BACKGROUND: Animal models that simultaneously reproduce neurotrophic keratopathy (NK) and limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD) are scarce, despite the frequent clinical coexistence of these two conditions. We aimed to establish a reproducible rat model showing a combined NK/LSCD phenotype by selectively injuring the ophthalmic branch of the trigeminal nerve (V1) within the orbit. METHODS: Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats underwent intraorbital V1 transection or V1 exposure without transection. Corneal sensitivity was evaluated qualitatively using a cotton-swab touch response and quantitatively us

Harnessing Artificial Intelligence to Restore Standards in Medical and Dental Education in Pakistan.

The month of March is dedicated to Colon Cancer Awareness. Worldwide, colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence has been on the rise. It is currently the third most common cancer in men (746,000 cases, 10.0% of the total) and the second in women (614,000 cases, 9.2% of the total).1 Arecent meta-analysis reported a 61% risk reduction in CRC incidence with colonoscopy.2 Unlike screening programs for breast and prostate cancers, not only has CRC screening reduced mortality from colon cancer and detected early CRC, it has also decreased the incidence of CRC through detection and removal of pre-cancerous l

Occult intraorbital BB presenting as unilateral pigmentary retinopathy.

A 7-year-old boy presented with unilateral pigmentary retinopathy in the right eye. Best-corrected visual acuity was 20/200, and a relative afferent pupillary defect was noted. Fundus examination revealed sectoral retinal pigment epithelial changes involving the peripapillary, macular, and inferior peripheral retina. The patient and family denied any history of trauma to the orbit or projectile exposure. Over a year later, he presented with left-sided orbital cellulitis. An orbital computed tomography scan incidentally revealed a 6 mm metallic foreign body consistent with a BB along the poster

Pediatric orbital emphysema and pneumocephalus following a compressed air gun injury: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Orbital emphysema and pneumocephalus rarely occur without associated skull fractures. Over the past decades, a few case reports have documented compressed air injuries as a rare cause of orbital emphysema and pneumocephalus in the absence of concomitant skull fractures leading to various injuries. CASE PRESENTATION: We illustrate here a 12-year-old boy who presented with painless left eye swelling following an accidental compressed air blast injury. On examination, he exhibited mild bilateral visual acuity impairment. The left eyelids, periorbital region, and cheeks were swollen,

A case of bilateral orbital haemorrhages following periocular acupuncture.

Acupuncture has been practised for more than 2500 years in the Western Pacific Region and has become an important component of complementary medicine. Acupuncture technique involves the insertion of fine needles into the body at specific points to affect functional changes in internal organ systems. Periocular acupuncture is increasingly used to treat ophthalmologic and non-ophthalmologic conditions. Although there are reported benefits, there is a lack of high-quality evidence supporting its efficacy. There are also increasing reports of complications, including orbital haemorrhage, globe per
