Spinal cord injury (SCI) may lead to urinary system disturbances. Patients with SCI usually have neurogenic bladder, and treatment optionss for this condition include clean intermittent catheterization and a permanent indwelling urethral or suprapubic catheter. Complications of catheterization include urinary tract infection, calculi, urinary tract injury, bladder contraction, bladder spasm, renal dysfunction, bladder cancer, and so forth. To the best of our knowledge, ureteral rupture is an unusual complication of catheterization, and ureteral rupture has been rarely reported in SCI patients.

Delayed complications of electrical burns are mostly unexpected, and the link between the injury and the symptoms often goes unrecognized. A possible relation between source-ground sites and late clinical manifestations was recently emphasized. We report a unique case of combined intestinal-spinal delayed complications following a high-voltage electrical injury, a possible explanation being a greater current flow through the right hemisoma. The potential for late complications is an additional feature that physicians must consider in managing electrical injuries. Manifestations are variable an

Primary osseous leiomyosarcoma of the spine is a very unusual condition, with only few cases being reported in the literature. In fact, this type of tumors arises from the smooth muscle cells and occurs usually in the uterus and the gastrointestinal tracts. If the spine should be involved, it occurs generally as a metastatic location. Location to the spine as a primary site is exceedingly rare. We present the case of a 37 years old female patient, with multiple spine levels involvement - to vertebral body and to posterior aspects of Vertebra, causing spinal cord compression syndrome. A seconda

INTRODUCTION: Azoospermia causes about 10% of male infertility and the best therapeutic option is the retrieval of sperm from testis or epididymis.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: From Juanary 2008 to June 2016, 92 men (median 36 years; range: 25-54 years) were submitted in 47 cases to TESE (testicular sperm extraction) and in 45 cases to PESA (percutaneous epididymal sperm aspiration) for secretory and obstructive azoospermia, respectively; moreover, all the patients previously underwent color Doppler ultrasound of the testis and transrectal ultrasound of the prostate.
RESULTS: Serum FSH values were

UNLABELLED: Spinal cord injury (SCI) is characterised by profound respiratory compromise secondary to the level of loss of motor, sensory and autonomic control associated with the injury. This review aims to detail these anatomical and physiological changes after SCI, and outline their impact on respiratory function. Injury-related impairments in strength substantially alter pulmonary mechanics, which in turn affect respiratory management and care. Options for treatments must therefore be considered in light of these limitations.
KEY POINTS: Respiratory impairment following spinal cord injury

Phrenic motor facilitation (pMF), a form of respiratory plasticity, can be elicited by acute intermittent hypoxia (i.e., phrenic long-term facilitation, pLTF) or direct application of drugs to the cervical spinal cord. Moderate acute intermittent hypoxia (mAIH; 3 × 5-min episodes of 35-50 mmHg arterial Po2, 5-min normoxic intervals) induces pLTF by a serotonin-dependent mechanism; mAIH-induced pLTF is abolished by mild systemic inflammation induced by a low dose of lipopolysaccharide (LPS; 100 μg/kg ip). In contrast, severe acute intermittent hypoxia (sAIH; 3 × 5-min episodes of 25-30 mmHg art

Subaxial cervical spine trauma is common and an often missed diagnosis. Accurate and efficient diagnosis and management is necessary to avoid devastating complications such as spinal cord injury. Several classification schemes have been devised to help categorize fractures of the subaxial spine and define treatment algorithms. The Subaxial Cervical Spine Injury Classification System (SLIC) is widely used and evaluates not only fracture morphology but also considers ligamentous injury and neurological status in surgical decision making. However, interobserver reliability is poor, which proves t

Persons with spinal cord injury (SCI) undergo immediate unloading of the skeleton and, as a result, have severe bone loss below the level of lesion associated with increased risk of long-bone fractures. The pattern of bone loss in individuals with SCI differs from other forms of secondary osteoporosis because the skeleton above the level of lesion remains unaffected, while marked bone loss occurs in the regions of neurological impairment. Striking demineralization of the trabecular epiphyses of the distal femur (supracondylar) and proximal tibia occurs, with the knee region being highly vulner

We report the successful conservative management of an unusual case of esophageal perforation associated with an upper thoracic spinal fracture from blunt trauma in Minamata, Kumamoto, Japan. A 69-year-old man became paraplegic secondary to an L1 burst fracture caused by a boating accident and underwent posterior fixation on the day of admission. The patient also had a minimally displaced T4 vertebral fracture. Fever, dyspnea and elevated inflammatory markers all persisted postoperatively. Computed tomography showed free mediastinal air at the T4 level, and an esophagram showed contrast medium

Spinal metastatic disease is a rather common occurrence and definitely warrants attention and treatment due to the high likelihood of leaving cancer patients severely disabled in their final months of life. Recent developments in the understanding of the behavior of different tumor types, as well as advances in surgical treatment, are allowing for the evolution of treatment algorithms, especially when surgical treatment is to be considered. This paper gives an overview of the decision-making process and the array of surgical options currently available.

In this case report clinical and technical lessons including seven years follow up learned from a flexion-distraction, highly unstable cervical spine injury causing a complete separation of C6-7 cervical segment with tetraparesis in a 23-month-old boy, are presented. To our knowledge this is the only documented case in medical literature where adult size implants (cage, plate and lateral mass screw-rod system) were utilized for cervical combined anterior and posterior internal fixation in a child under the age of two years without implant-size related problems. Seven years after the injury the

This study aims to explore the temporal changes of cytotoxic CD8+ CD28+ and regulatory CD8+ CD28- T-cell subsets in the lesion microenvironment after spinal cord injury (SCI) in rats, by combination of immunohistochemistry (IHC) and flow cytometry (FCM). In the sham-opened spinal cord, few CD8+ T cells were found. After SCI, the CD8+ T cells were detected at one day post-injury (dpi), then markedly increased and were significantly higher at 3, 7, and 14 dpi compared with one dpi (p < 0.01), the highest being seven dpi. In CD8+ T cells, more than 90% were CD28+ , and there were only small part
