A Case of Pulmonary Metastasis from Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma of the Hard Palate Exhibiting Ground Glass Nodules.

INTRODUCTION: Metastatic lung tumors typically exhibit well-defined, enhanced margins on chest CT. They may rarely present as ground-glass nodules (GGNs), making it challenging to differentiate from primary lung cancers, which can also manifest as progressively enlarging GGNs on CT. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient is a woman in her 50s who underwent surgery for adenoid cystic carcinoma of the hard palate 19 years ago. Seven years ago, chest CT showed GGNs in the upper lobe of the right lung as well as in the upper and lower lobes of the left lung. The patient underwent bilateral lung wedge res

Analgesic effects of platelet-rich fibrin (PRF): A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF), a second-generation autologous platelet concentrate, has gained significant interest for its anti-inflammatory and regenerative characteristics. While its role in tissue healing is well-recognized, the analgesic potential of PRF remains under-investigated. AIM: The primary objective of this systematic review was to critically evaluate any pain-reported outcome of PRF across all medical and dental procedures in human studies. The secondary objective was to also evaluate outcomes regarding swelling reduction with PRF and other patient-reported outcomes su

Age-dependent development of the interincisive suture: a CT-based study on prevalence and dimensions.

The interincisive suture (sutura interincisiva) connects the left and right premaxilla at the midline of the anterior palate and plays a role in craniofacial development. Despite its anatomical and developmental importance, postnatal changes in this suture remain understudied. Here, we investigated the age-dependent growth and closure of the interincisive suture using CT scans from 384 patients aged 0-94 years. Suture presence, length, and width were assessed in five-year age groups. Results show a progressive closure of the suture with age, with complete obliteration in most individuals over

Sinus and palatal Rosai-Dorfman Disease: Case report and review of the literature.

Rosai-Dorfman Disease (RDD) is a rare non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis. We present a unique case of RDD with sinus and palatal involvement managed with surgical biopsy, debulking and radiation, and review the literature on this topic. A 69-year-old female presented with a two-year history of nasal obstruction and left-sided epiphora. CT imaging demonstrated a large soft tissue mass with extension into and bony destruction of the left maxillary sinus and hard palate. An initial biopsy obtained at an outside center reported an inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor. MRI and PET-CT were obtained and

Talimogene Laherparepvec treatment for mucosal melanoma with metastatic lymph node metastasis: case report.

Mucosal melanoma is a rare and aggressive subtype of melanoma, accounting for approximately 1% of all melanoma cases. Of those, only 4% occur primarily in the vagina. Talimogene Laherparepvec (T-VEC) is a biopharmaceutical medication that is used to treat unresectable malignant melanoma. However, the clinical trials for this treatment option excluded patients with mucosal melanomas. Here we report a case of an 85-year-old female with vaginal melanoma with regional lymph node metastasis that had complete durable response to combined T-VEC and immune checkpoint inhibition treatment. This is, to

Distant Pulmonary Metastasis in Microsecretory Adenocarcinoma of the Salivary Gland: A Case Report Highlighting Histological Variation and Aggressive Potential.

Microsecretory adenocarcinoma (MSA) is a rare, recently defined, low-grade salivary gland neoplasm characterized by a recurrent MEF2C::SS18 gene fusion and a generally indolent clinical course. Most tumors arise in the oral cavity, particularly the hard palate and buccal mucosa, and display microcystic and tubular architecture with bland cytological features and a consistent immunoprofile, including SOX10, S100, and p63 positivity, while p40 is negative. To date, fewer than 50 patients have been reported, with only 2 demonstrating high-grade histological features or distant metastasis. Herein,

Changes and Correlations Between the Width and Height of the Hard Palate During Rapid Maxillary Expansion with a Printed Tooth-Borne Expander.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The nasomaxillary complex is a compound anatomical structure in which the correlation between changes in palatal width and height has been poorly investigated. METHODS: A three-year prospective study with 28 patients treated with printed expanders was conducted. Measurements on CBCT images were performed before and after treatment; the width and height parameters were measured on a coronal slice of a CBCT image at the level of the first molars and upper first molar inclination relative to the palatal plane. RESULTS: A significant difference was found between the values

Association between palatal rugae patterns and terminal planes in primary dentition: Implications for the early detection of malocclusion.

INTRODUCTION: Palatal rugae, or palatal folds, are the unique anatomical features on the hard palate that emerge during fetal development and remain stable throughout the life. These features are valuable for human identification in forensic science, as they are less prone to damage from thermal exposure or physical trauma. AIM AND OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to determine if there is an association between different palatal rugae patterns and terminal planes in primary dentition. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study population consisted of 600 children aged 3-6 years, classified into three term

Pleomorphic Adenoma of the Palatal Minor Salivary Gland: An Unusual Case With Imaging and Cytological Correlation.

Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common salivary gland neoplasm, accounting for a significant proportion of both major and minor salivary gland tumors. While it most frequently arises from the parotid or submandibular glands, it can occasionally present as an intraoral mass over the palate or lip when originating from the minor salivary glands. A palatal pleomorphic adenoma typically presents as a painless, gradually enlarging mass on the posterolateral aspect of the palate. This case highlights the importance of considering pleomorphic adenoma in the differential diagnosis of palatal swellings

Senescence in palatal rugae development.

OBJECTIVES: Periodic patterning is a common feature observed in many organs and is believed to share common molecular mechanisms during development. Palatal rugae, periodically patterned ridges located on the mammalian hard palate, provide an excellent experimental model for investigating the mechanisms of periodic patterning. METHODS: We investigated senescence during palatal rugae development in wild-type mice. RESULTS: Senescence-associated β-galactosidase (SA-β-gal) activity was observed during palatal rugae development in wild-type mice. During embryonic days (E) 12-14, SA-β-gal activit

Black Hole in My Child's Mouth: An Unusual Case of a Foreign Body Mimicking a Palatal Lesion in a Healthy Infant.

Foreign bodies in the oral cavity of children can pose significant diagnostic challenges, particularly when they are asymptomatic and mimic serious pathological lesions. We report an unusual and deceptive case involving a 16-month-old infant who presented with what appeared to be a suspicious black lesion firmly adhered to the hard palate. Upon further investigation, the lesion was identified as a plastic emblem dislodged from a car key fob, firmly stuck due to adhesive residue. This case underscores the critical importance of thorough history-taking, detailed and careful oral examination, and

Automated Computed Tomography Segmentation of the Pharyngeal Airway and Palate to Accelerate Tübingen Palatal Plate Fabrication in Pierre Robin Sequence.

Infants with Pierre Robin sequence frequently develop upper airway obstruction due to micrognathia and glossoptosis. The Tübingen palatal plate repositions the tongue base anteriorly to improve airway patency; however, conventional fabrication requires serial intraoral impressions and repeated nasoendoscopy, which prolongs airway compromise. Computed tomography (CT) enables single-session virtual spur design, yet manual pharyngeal airway and hard palate segmentation is labor-intensive, delaying treatment. The authors evaluated convolutional neural network-based automated segmentation to accele

Palatal Tuberculosis: A Rare Manifestation of Extrapulmonary Tuberculosis.

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a relevant public health concern in Portugal, despite the progress achieved in its control and management over recent years. Extrapulmonary manifestations represent a notable proportion of cases, while oral manifestations are uncommon, particularly those affecting the palate, which are rarely reported. The authors describe a case of a 63-year-old Afghan woman with multiple comorbidities, including poorly controlled diabetes mellitus with end-organ damage and heart failure, who presented with a painless ulcerated lesion on the hard palate with erythematous borders and
