Rotary Instrument-Induced Soft Palatal Laceration During Dental Restorative Treatment: A Case Report.

Iatrogenic soft tissue injuries are recognized complications of dental procedures, most commonly affecting the tongue, buccal mucosa, and gingiva. However, trauma involving posterior palatal structures remains rarely documented. This case report describes a deep soft palatal laceration sustained during posterior restorative dental treatment following accidental contact with a high-speed rotary instrument. The injury resulted in mucosal and muscular disruption requiring surgical repair, which was subsequently complicated by early suture dehiscence due to the high-mobility nature of the soft pal

Cephalometric Assessment of Airway-Related Hyoid Position and Velar Morphology Across Skeletal Malocclusions: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background: The anatomical position of the hyoid bone and the morphological characteristics of the soft palate play a key role in upper airway patency, craniofacial balance, and the coordination of functional structures. These features may vary depending on skeletal pattern and gender. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between hyoid bone position, soft palate morphology, skeletal classification, and gender using lateral cephalograms. Methods: A total of 120 individuals (60 females and 60 males) were classified as Skeletal Class I, II, or III based on the ANB (A Point-Nasion-B Point

Persistent Wnt/β-catenin signaling disables soft palatogenesis and palatal osteogenesis by inducing mesenchymal condensation.

INTRODUCTION: Mammalian palates are composed of the anterior hard palate and the posterior soft palate. However, the correlation of the genesis, pattern formation, and morphogenesis between the hard and soft palates remains elusive. METHODS: In this study, we explicated the complicated palatal defects in Osr2-cre KI ;Ctnnb1 ex3f mice, in which canonical Wnt activity was persistent due to constitutively active β-catenin in the palatal mesenchyme. Osr2-cre KI ;Ctnnb1 ex3f palates displayed an ectopic mesenchymal condensation extending from the proximal-posterior area to the distal-anterior area

Morphometric Analysis of Soft Palate: Comparison of Need's Ratio with Palatal Variants and Gender Using Digital Lateral Cephalogram in Normal Individuals.

BACKGROUND: The soft palate plays a crucial role in swallowing, respiration, and speech. Variations in its morphology and dimensions may contribute to velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI) and conditions like obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). Limited data exist on soft palate morphometrics in the Malaysian population using digital lateral cephalograms and Need's ratio. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the morphology and dimensions of the soft palate in normal individuals using digital lateral cephalograms and determine the distribution of soft palate types in relation to gender and Need's ratio.

Fusion of the Pharyngeal Wall to the Soft Palate Around the Laryngeal Inlet Isolates the Airway in Odontocete Cetaceans.

In odontocete cetaceans (toothed whales, dolphins, and porpoises), a palatopharyngeal sphincter permanently anchors the laryngeal inlet in the nasopharynx and isolates the airway from the gut tube. Using an MRI data set of a pacific white-sided dolphin (Aethalodelphis obliquidens), together with dissections of the dolphin and two neonatal harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena), we show that the sphincter is formed by fusion of part of the superior constrictor of the pharyngeal wall to the soft palate. The part of the superior constrictor that participates in forming the sphincter is brought clo

A prospective cohort study testing whether oral cavity mucosal tissue variability influences elastic scattering spectroscopy (ESS) measures.

OBJECTIVE: Elastic Scattering Spectroscopy (ESS) has been shown to accurately discriminate between benign and malignant tissue in the oral cavity, which makes it a promising technology to assist with intraoperative oral cancer margin guidance. However, some spectroscopy-based technologies are influenced by locoregional histopathological differences, which can influence diagnostic accuracy and data acquisition procedures. The objective of this study was to assess the extent to which ESS spectral readings of mucosal tissue varied between different anatomic regions of the oral cavity in a cohort

Management of Acquired Nasopharyngeal Stenosis in Pediatric Patients: A Case Report.

Acquired nasopharyngeal stenosis is a rare condition in pediatric patients. This report describes the case of a 10-year-old girl who developed nasopharyngeal stenosis following cleft palate surgery, presenting with bilateral nasal obstruction, chronic mouth breathing, and snoring. Laryngoscopic and computed tomography examinations revealed fibrous adhesions completely separating the oropharyngeal cavity from the nasopharyngeal cavity. The patient was successfully treated using coblation to ablate the adhesive band, followed by the placement of a nasopharyngeal airway between the soft palate an

Pedicled Forehead Flap for Palatal Defect Reconstruction: A Novel and Effective Technique.

BACKGROUND: Reconstruction of extensive palatal defects remains challenging, particularly in patients for whom free tissue transfer is contraindicated or has failed. The forehead flap, traditionally used for nasal reconstruction, offers robust vascularity and a long arc of rotation but has rarely been applied to palatal defects. This report introduces a novel application of the supratrochlear artery-based forehead flap for reconstruction of complex palatal defects using transnasal osteotomy-assisted intraoral transfer. METHODS: In this report, we present 2 patients with combined hard and soft

Deep learning for stenotic nares classification in brachycephalic dogs.

Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS) is a debilitating respiratory disorder that primarily affects brachycephalic dog breeds such as French Bulldogs and Pugs. Structural abnormalities such as everted laryngeal saccules, hyperplastic soft palate (with thickness rather than length associated with BOAS severity), and stenotic nares contribute to increased airway resistance. Stenotic nares are recognized as a major conformational risk factor associated with BOAS; however, their presence alone does not establish a clinical diagnosis, which requires comprehensive history and physical ex

Airway Anatomy and Surgical Management in Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a sleep-related breathing disorder characterized by recurrent collapse of a structurally vulnerable upper airway during sleep. Airway caliber and stability are influenced by multiple anatomical structures, including the nasal cavity, soft palate, lateral pharyngeal walls, tongue base, hyoid complex, and craniofacial skeleton. Detailed knowledge of these structures is therefore essential for rational surgical planning. This narrative review summarizes key anatomical features relevant to upper pharyngeal surgery, including nasal obstruction and the internal nasal

Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome: Grading, Assessment, and Treatment.

The anatomic abnormalities found in dogs with brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome lead to changes in airway resistance and turbulent airflow. Altered airway resistance leads to secondary airway changes. All these changes cause airway noises, which may be present at rest or elicited during exercise. Exercise tolerance tests, careful respiratory auscultation, and identification of increased effort respiratory can help to grade brachycephalic dogs into different categories based on disease severity. Other categorization systems and multiple surgical procedures aim to stratify and alter the
