How I Do It: Nasoseptal Flap for Reconstruction of Isolated Soft Palate Defect.

A vascularized nasoseptal flap (NSF) provides a novel transnasal option for repairing soft palatal fistulas when traditional transoral flaps have failed or are unavailable, potentially avoiding the morbidity of regional or free tissue transfer. In the current patient who had an 8 × 6 mm soft palatal fistula, the NSF was harvested from the septum and nasal floor, rotated through the nasopharynx to cover the fistula, and was suture-fixated transorally to the mobile soft palate to promote stable adherence and healing. Closure was successful, which resolved her nasal regurgitation, partially impro

Does Water Resistance Therapy Influence Vocal Vibrato In Classically Trained Singers?

Water resistance therapy (WRT) exercises are a common tool that aims to relax and free the voice by increased impedance and the massage effects of pressure modulations of low-frequency bubbles. It has been hypothesized that such exercises could have a direct effect on vocal vibrato due to relaxation effects or sensorimotor feedback loops. Since the bubbling frequency is often slightly faster than vibrato in trained singers, it has been hypothesized that vibrato rate could be increased after WRT. To assess this topic, the phonations of eight Western-classically trained singers (three male, five

A Clinical Perspective on Herpetiform Aphthous Stomatitis: A Case Report on the Findings of 126 Oral Ulcers in a 21-Year-Old Male.

Herpetiform aphthous ulcer (HAU), a rare clinical variant of aphthous ulcer, presents in the oral cavity as multiple, grouped tiny ulcers. These ulcers occur in the mobile, non-keratinized labial mucosa, soft palate, buccal mucosa, and ventral surface of the tongue and are known for their severe and debilitating pain. This article presents a unique and intriguing case of herpetiform aphthous ulcers in a 21-year-old male who reported severe soreness and burning sensations during the consumption of food. The intraoral clinical findings of this rare case of herpetiform aphthous ulcers revealed a

Piezoelectric Palatine Foraminotomy in Wide Cleft Palate Repair: A New Approach for Safe Neurovascular Pedicle Mobilization.

INTRODUCTION: Surgical repair of large cleft palates is challenging and is associated with high postoperative fistula rates. Midline tension is a critical factor in fistula formation. Foraminotomy enables increased medial mobilization of the palatal flaps, particularly in cases in which standard palatal closure would otherwise result in excessive midline tension; however, this procedure carries a risk of neurovascular pedicle injury and subsequent flap necrosis. In this study, we present our surgical technique for piezoelectric palatine foraminotomy to facilitate palatal flap mobilization and

Epidemiological Investigation of Sex Differences by Cleft Phenotype and Extent in Cleft Lip and/or Palate: The Cohort Study of 4548 Japanese Patients.

Cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) shows well-recognized sex differences, with a male predominance in cleft lip (CL) and cleft lip and palate (CLP), and a female predominance in isolated cleft palate (CP). However, how these differences vary according to detailed cleft patterns and extent remains unclear. This retrospective observational study included 4548 patients with CL/P treated at the cleft lip and palate center of Aichi-Gakuin University Dental Hospital between 1989 and 2024. Patients were classified using a detailed cleft pattern system. Sex differences were analyzed according to cleft typ

Severe Oral Myiasis in an Elderly Man with Epilepsy Caused by the New World Screwworm (Cochliomyia hominivorax) in Subtropical Ecuador.

Oral myiasis is a rare medical condition in which soft tissues of the oral cavity are invaded by the larvae (maggots) of several flies. We report a fatal case in a 75-year-old man from a subtropical rural region of Ecuador who presented to a public health center with respiratory distress, peripheral cyanosis, dyspnea, and a Glasgow Coma Scale score of 9 of 15. The oral cavity emitted a fetid odor and contained bloody secretions with extensive larval invasion affecting the gingiva, lower lip, tongue, and soft palate. More than 300 larvae were manually extracted and morphologically identified as

Deviated Uvula Resulting From Herpes Zoster Infection: A Case Report.

The uvula is a soft tissue that freely hangs down from the soft palate posterior margin. It prevents the soft palate from entering the nasopharynx during sneezing and coughing. The uvula contains mucus glands, which help to keep the throat moist and facilitate swallowing. The uvula plays a vital role in speech and helps deflect foreign bodies accidentally entering the oral cavity by triggering the gag reflex on touch. Deviation of the uvula is often an overlooked sign by oral physicians. Deviation of the uvula is linked to viral illnesses such as herpes zoster (HZ), coronavirus disease 2019, o

Large symptomatic oral squamous papilloma: a report of two unusual cases.

BACKGROUND: Oral squamous papilloma is a common benign tumor of the oral mucosa that typically presents as a solitary, exophytic mass less than 10 mm in diameter. The abnormal outgrowth is often slow-growing and asymptomatic. However, its finger-like projections or cauliflower-like appearance, as well as emerging complications such as pain, can raise concerns. While most solitary oral squamous papillomas are usually innocuous, large, symptomatic, or multiple lesions may warrant closer surveillance because they have been linked, albeit rarely, to malignant transformation. CASE PRESENTATION: We

[Interest as Catalyzer: The Role of Interest in the Use of Incremental Scaffolds in Inquiry-Based Learning].

BACKGROUND: Use of human mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) is a promising strategy for cell therapy in injured tissues recovery. However, MSCs acquire genetic changes when cultivated in vitro that make them more susceptible to undergo neoplastic transformation. Therefore, genomic integrity of stem cells should be monitored carefully for the use in basic research and clinical trials, including karyotype analysis to confirm the absence of genetic instability. Here, we report a case of a male 67-year-old patient selected to join the study: "Autologous transplantation of mesenchymal cells for treat

Characteristics of patients hospitalized for diabetic foot in a national hospital in Peru, 2024.

INTRODUCTION: Expansive processes around the third ventricle have always been a major neurosurgical challenge. Despite all the technological and scientific progress recorded over the last few years, third ventricle tumors are still a very difficult pathology to approach due to their formidable complexity.Treating such a tumor demands a good knowledge of local anatomy, pathophysiology, pathology and a good capacity to integrate all the data gathered from the patient prior to and during surgery. Last but not least, the correct means to approach such a tumor involves using modern neuronavigation

PRMT7 at the crossroads of cancer progression and therapeutic targeting (Review).

Acute lung injury (ALI) affects over 10% of patients hospitalised in critical care, with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) being the most severe form of ALI and having a mortality rate in the region of 40%. There has been slow but incremental progress in identification of biomarkers that contribute to the pathophysiology of ARDS, have utility in diagnosis and monitoring, and that are potential therapeutic targets (Calfee CS, Delucchi K, Parsons PE, Thompson BT, Ware LB, Matthay MA, Thompson T, Ware LB, Matthay MA, Lancet Respir Med 2014, 2:611--620). However, a major issue is that ARD

Poorly Differentiated and Biologically Aggressive Oral Rhabdomyosarcoma in 34 Young Dogs.

Rhabdomyosarcoma is an aggressive neoplasm of primitive mesenchymal cells that have the potential to differentiate into skeletal muscle. Case selection required positive expression of both vimentin and desmin, confirmed by immunohistochemistry, and negative expression of cytokeratin. In this study of 34 young dogs, the average age at time of diagnosis was 16.5 months. The majority of tumors were located in the maxilla (n = 26, 76%), whereas a smaller subset (n = 4, 11%) occurred solely within the mandible. One (2.9%) involved the caudal mandible and maxilla, 1 of 34 (2.9%) involved the maxilla
