Lining of total cheek mucosa defects can be accomplished by opening the tongue along its lateral border and preparing two myomucosa flaps that can be swung upward and downward like a double door to be sutured into the defect. The tongue is released 3 weeks later in a second-stage operation. The operation is quick and easy compared with other methods to achieve lining for such defects. Tongue function is not impaired after healing of the second-stage operation.

Antitumor immunity was assessed in a group of 10 patients suffering from squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity using the humoral leukocyte adherence inhibition assay (H-LAI). The prevalence of Fordyce's granules in a group of 2,462 Israeli Jews was determined. Fordyce's granules were observed in 94.9% of the entire sample. The most common location was the vermilion border of the upper lip (82.2%), followed by the retromolar area (73.3%), the buccal mucosa (65.9%) and the vermilion border of the lower lip (29.2%). The granules were common in men. A significant difference in prevalence was found between the Ashkenazi group and each of the other two ethnic groups.

In an effort to improve tumor control by radiation therapy, a treatment regimen consisting of concurrent combination of bleomycin (90 mg/3 weeks) and radiation (30 Gy/3 weeks) was applied. Between 1972 and 1981, 287 patients with squamous cell carcinoma in the oral cavity were subjected to this bleomycin-radiation combination regimen. All except 4 patients experienced marked response after treatment using the bleomycin-radiation combination alone. One hundred thirty-four patients (47%) obtained CR and 149 (53%) PR. This case report describes an unusual salivary gland lesion that involved the retromolar area. This lesion presented clinically as an asymptomatic tumorlike nodule that was characterized microscopically by a proliferation of mucous salivary gland tissue. The exact nature of this focal enlargement of accessory salivary gland tissue is not known. Because this lesion cannot be distinguished clinically from a salivary gland neoplasm, it must be excised and examined microscopically.

Modified ATPase histochemistry was used to identify and count Langerhans cells (LC) in autopsy tissue from 8 oral mucosal sites, 8-20 h postmortem. Subjects using 30 mM zinc phenolsulphonate as a mouthwash retained 12 per cent of the zinc. Salivary zinc concentration was increased by using mouthwashes containing 17-35 mM zinc as the sulphate, phenolsulphonate or citrate.
