Analysis of the ENG records of 150 patients with well substantiated neurologic disease involving the structure of the posterior fossa revealed a high incidence of diminished optic fixation inhibition (DOFI) of caloric induced nystagmus. DOFI is defined as less than 50 percent decrease of speed of the slow phase when eyes are open and fixated. The whole group was subdivided into seven subgroups according to type and location of disease and the incidence of DOFI was found to vary significantly in the different subgroups. This study measured the effects of superior colliculus (SC) lesions on skill at localizing stationary or moving objects, and on ability to discriminate between objects which differed in pattern or brightness in squirrel monkeys. Bilateral electrolytic lesions of the SC were made in 8 monkeys (EXP group); the lesions in 5 (SC group) were restricted essentially to the SC (22-25% damaged), the other 3 had additional unilateral damage to the midbrain reticular formation (10 to 14% damage to SC). The control group (N = 15) consisted of 9 unoperated, 3 sham-operated, and 3 lesioned-control monkeys.

Rhesus monkeys raised with mechanically driven mobile artificial mothers for the first 10 months of life looked more at other animals and were more sensitive to stimulus differences than monkeys raised on stationary surrogates. Both groups looked less and were not as discriminating as wild-born monkeys. The results are consistent with other evidence suggesting that one of the long-range consequences of maternal mobility is to reduce emotional responsiveness to novel situations.

Young domestic chicks were reared individually in compartments of four different colors and then tested either in a color-preference test with stationary objects (N equals 128) or with a moving stimulus (N equals 128). After unilateral removal of the optic tectum in frogs, the cut optic tract regenerates to the remaining ipsilateral tectum. Phycomyces sporangiophores grow away from stationary objects, a phenomenon known as the avoidance response. Evidence is presented suggesting that a growth-stimulating gas is emitted from the sporangiophore and is then swept to the leeward side by air currents resulting in higher gas concentration on that side. The presence of a stationary barrier decreases the passive movement of the gas away from the leeward side. It is proposed that an increase of this gas on one side causes that side to grow faster. Indirect evidence suggests that the gas is water vapor.
