Inequality aversion and prosocial punishment: Evidence from a one-shot public goods game.

The willingness to engage in costly punishment of free riders (prosocial punishment) is crucial to foster group cooperation and understand public goods provision. While prosocial punishment is common across societies, its motivations remain unclear. Scholars have suggested that people resist inequitable outcomes and willingly bear costs to sanction free riders, seeking a fairer distribution of payoffs. This study tests a key implication of such fairness-driven arguments: if inequality aversion drives prosocial punishment, individuals should punish less when redistribution occurs, as equality c

Patterns and predictors of co-occurring risky behaviors among motorcyclists.

OBJECTIVES: Motorcyclists, as a vulnerable group of road users, not only suffer from trauma caused by collisions with other vehicles but also from the consequences of their own risky behaviors. As the number of motorcycle crashes has continued to rise in recent years, it is essential to understand trends in motorcyclists' risky behaviors to enhance their safety. This study investigates the co-occurrence of six risky riding behaviors-speeding, alcohol-impaired riding, helmet nonuse, distraction, fatigue, and anger-and identifies rider characteristics associated with distinct behavioral profiles

Which factors influence rider injury severity in powered two-wheeler accidents? A systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: The high accident risk associated with Powered Two-Wheelers (PTWs) and the limited generalizability of conclusions due to regional data disparities necessitate a comprehensive global analysis. This systematic review aims to identify the influencing factors of injury severity in PTW accidents worldwide. METHODS: This study adhered to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. We conducted a comprehensive review of scientific literature on PTW accidents, ultimately identifying 32 high-quality peer-reviewed papers. The findings of thes

Immune remodeling via mitochondria-dependent STING activation enhances cabozantinib response in hepatocellular carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Cabozantinib, a tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) approved for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), has established clinical benefit although the underlying immunomodulatory mechanisms, particularly those involving mitochondrial stress and the cGAS/STING pathway, remain poorly defined. METHODS: We assessed cabozantinib’s effects on mitochondrial integrity and innate immune signaling in hepatoma cells and macrophage cell lines, analyzing mitochondrial depolarization, reactive oxygen species production, cytosolic release of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), activation of the cGAS/STING pa

Injury severity analysis of e-bike crashes: An age-stratified study of riders aged 40 and above.

As electric bikes (e-bikes) gain popularity, traffic safety concerns have intensified, particularly for riders aged 40 and above, who face heightened risks due to declining physiological capabilities. However, research analyzing crash injury severity factors for this demographic remains limited. This study examined 2452 e-bike crashes involving riders aged 40 and above in Jiaozhou, China, divided into three groups: 40-50 years, 50-60 years, and 60 years and above. A hybrid methodological framework combining the eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) algorithm with Shapley Additive exPlanations (S

Building Transit Confidence: A Nonprofit Summer Camp's Approach to Youth Transportation Literacy in Austin.

Many young people in the United States lack the exposure, confidence, and skills necessary to use public transportation independently. Our nonprofit in Austin, Texas addresses this gap by integrating daily public transit use into its summer camp experience. Each day, children (campers) and teens (volunteers) receive training and are led by camp leaders through the city using public transportation to reach educational destinations. This hands-on approach aligns with experiential learning theory, which emphasizes learning through action and reflection. It also reflects the PRECEDE-PROCEED model,

Dynamic dilemma zone at signalized intersection: attention allocation patterns using cure survival analysis for male riders.

The design of the signal at the intersection considers the constant speed of the riders and the dilemma zone to be static. However, these assumptions may not hold true in complex environments with multiple users. This study explores the dynamic dilemma zone by incorporating the time to detect the signal by analyzing the drivers' eye gaze movements and attention allocation patterns. The delay in detecting the amber phase of the signal can put drivers in a situation where they can neither safely cross the intersection nor stop before the stop line. The experiments were conducted in a virtual env

Evaluating Legacy and Emerging PFAS in Human Blood Collected from 2003 to 2021.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are a class of manmade chemicals linked to numerous health outcomes including cancers and increased cholesterol. Consequently, legacy PFASs such as perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) have been voluntarily phased out of production within the United States since the early 2000s. However, as replacements, emerging PFASs have been introduced over the last 25 years. The presence and accumulation of these emerging PFASs remains largely unexplored due to the complexity of their identification and quantification. Here, we a

Challenging Additivity: Comparing Predicted and Observed AhR Activity of Polycyclic Aromatic Compound (PAC) Mixtures Containing Active and Inactive Constituents.

Class-based cumulative risk assessment approaches have been applied to high-priority environmental contaminants such as polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs), yet uncertainties remain in their application. In this study, we evaluated the influence of inactive chemicals on mixture modeling outcomes and explored strategies for predicting the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR)-mediated toxicity of PAC mixtures. Using an in vitro AhR reporter gene assay, we tested seven defined mixtures composed of six active and seven inactive PACs. Observed concentration-response curves were compared to predictions

Transcriptomic profiling and machine learning uncover gene signatures of psoriasis endotypes and disease severity.

BACKGROUND: Despite increased understanding of psoriasis pathogenesis, molecular classification of clinical phenotypes and disease severity is poorly defined. Knowledge gaps include whether molecular endotypes of psoriasis underlie distinct clinical phenotypes and the positive and negative molecular regulators of disease severity across tissue compartments. METHODS: We performed comprehensive RNA sequencing of skin and blood (n = 718) from prospectively-recruited, deeply-phenotyped discovery and replication cohorts of 146 subjects with moderate-to-severe chronic plaque psoriasis initiating TN

Modeling how hunting strategies and pack size shape each other.

Social foraging exhibits unexpected features, such as the existence of a group size threshold above which hunting success is not improved, mainly because, above this threshold, additional individuals are free-riders that withhold effort. These observations have been supported by computational models of group hunting, which reveal a mechanism that causes hunting success to peak at small group sizes. In the model, hunters follow two simple rules: approach the prey until a safe distance is reached, and when closer to the prey than a critical avoidance distance, move away from other hunters. The m

Conducting a large-scale randomised controlled trial in children's social care: reflections on challenges, successes and lessons learned from the Reflective Fostering Study.

BACKGROUND: Research in Children's Social Care in the United Kingdom operates in a framework that was initially designed to support medical research within healthcare settings. Although adaptations to this framework have been made for social care settings, our experience suggested that significant systemic and organisational challenges to conducting large-scale randomised controlled trials in fostering services in the United Kingdom still remain, which work against the likelihood of such studies being completed successfully. A further challenge we faced was that that many fostering services we
