Previous research in healthy individuals has demonstrated that fast bolus progression of thin liquid results in earlier true vocal fold (TVF) closure compared to thick liquid. This study investigated whether this timing adjustment occurred in individuals with stroke and whether dysphagia severity affected this adjustment. This retrospective observational study included 54 participants with stroke (37 males, 17 females, mean [standard deviation] age: 63.7 [13.8] years) who underwent CT swallow studies with thick and thin liquids (10 ml each). The onset of TVF closure, laryngeal vestibule (LV) c

Vallecular masses are uncommon lesions, typically benign. Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) arising in vallecular cysts is exceedingly rare, with only three previous case reports documented in the medical literature. A 58-year-old male presented with a two-month history of throat foreign body sensation without any systemic symptoms. Physical examination and initial assessment appeared unremarkable. Fibre optic laryngoscopy and contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) revealed a 3 → 3-cm smooth cystic lesion in the right vallecula. Transoral collar-assisted surgical excision was performed, followe

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: The branchial or pharyngeal apparatus, crucial in embryological development, consists of clefts, arches, pouches, and membranes. Anomalies arising from this apparatus particularly involving the second branchial arch, are rare. Among these anomalies, complete second branchial cleft fistulas, with both external and internal openings, are exceptionally uncommon. This case report presents such a rarity in a fifteen-year-old boy, highlighting the clinical presentation, diagnostic approach, surgical management, and outcome.

Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) may deviate from the expected clinical course, posing diagnostic challenges to clinicians. The present study presents a case of longstanding swelling on the left side of the neck, initially diagnosed as a cystic lesion, which was later revealed to be metastatic thyroid cancer. A 21-year-old woman presented with a 3-year history of a neck mass that had initially been diagnosed as a likely hemangioma or branchial cleft cyst in 2019. However, subsequent scans in 2022 revealed a suspicious cyst and a thyroid nodule, which were confirmed to be PTC with metastasis t

A 6-month-old presented with a sinus in the neck coursing from below the body of the mandible, between the carotid and parotid spaces, and terminating posterior to the stylomastoid foramen on MRI. Facial nerve monitoring was used, a lacrimal probe was placed in the sinus, an elliptical incision was made in the skin, and the tract was followed to the parapharyngeal space. Pathology demonstrated a keratinous squamous epithelial lining, skin adnexae, and elastic cartilage. Because there were clinical, radiographic, and pathological features intermediate to first and second branchial anomalies, we

Branchial cleft cysts are congenital anomalies of development, with the second branchial cleft cyst being the most common clinically. In extremely rare cases, branchial cleft cysts can undergo malignant transformation. Herein, we present a rare case of a 65-year-old male patient who had a painless neck mass on the left side for 6 months. Routine postoperative histopathological examination of the resected mass revealed branchial cleft carcinoma. We excluded the possibility of systemic metastasis through PET-CT and subsequently performed radical neck dissection. Routine follow-up revealed no rec

SUMMARY: Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) in a branchial cleft cyst (BCC) is exceedingly rare. This case report describes a 53-year-old male with a BCC containing PTC. Despite normal preoperative thyroid imaging, total thyroidectomy revealed multifocal bilateral micropapillary thyroid carcinoma with a contralateral metastatic lymph node, suggesting an aggressive disease course. This finding supports the likelihood that thyroid gland carcinoma metastasized to the BCC. However, the possibility of a primary tumor arising from ectopic thyroid tissue within the cyst cannot be excluded. To our know

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Branchial cleft anomalies (BCA) are a group of relatively common congenital pediatric neck masses, which exhibit wide variability in clinical presentation and treatment approaches. This study attempts to fill this gap by evaluating BCA clinical, radiographic, and treatment features in a large cross-sectional cohort.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective cross-sectional study of patients with BCA presenting to a single pediatric quaternary care center between 2017 and 2023. The radiology information system was queried for the term "branchial," with diagnos

INTRODUCTION: Second branchial cleft (SBC) fistulas are the most common branchial cleft anomalies and typically present in infancy or early childhood. While complete surgical excision is the standard treatment, surgical challenges in younger children arise because of narrower fistula tracts and inadequate visualization, which increase the risk of complications and recurrence.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 6-month-old boy with an SBC fistula who presented with persistent mucoid discharge from a right cervical orifice. Fistulography confirmed the presence of a complete SBC fistula.

Herein described is an eight-year-old female patient presenting with bilateral external ear canal duplication and a history of recurrent postauricular abscesses, otorrhea, and moderate left-sided conductive hearing loss. Previous incision and drainage of the postauricular abscesses yielded little long-term success. Medical history was otherwise unremarkable. Physical examination revealed a cystic mass in the right ear and postauricular fibrosis, likely a result of previous surgical interventions. An audiogram revealed asymmetric hearing function, with mild-to-moderate conductive hearing loss i
