Cystoscopy is a diagnostic and therapeutic procedure commonly employed in human medicine but that has received limited application in small animal practice. Readily applicable, cost-effective instruments are available for use in the dog and cat. The urethral opening, urethra, bladder, and ureteral openings can be effectively assessed, and samples can be collected for histopathology, cultures, and stone analysis. Flexible fiberoptic technology was first applied to cystoscopy in 1973, with greatly increased usage since 1982. Most procedures formerly performed with rigid cystoscopes can be done using flexible cystoscopes with minimal or no anesthesia. Cystoscopy has become an important and widely available component of the diagnostic evaluation of diseases of the lower urinary tract in dogs and cats. In addition, a large number of cystoscopic guided procedures have been described that can be used to treat disease processes that were previously treatable only with invasive surgical procedures. This article reviews the indications and contraindications for cystoscopy, cystoscopy equipment and techniques for male and female dogs and cats, potential complications associated with cystoscopy, and management options for these complications.

PURPOSE: We compare virtual cystoscopy (VC) and transabdominal ultrasonography (US) with conventional cystoscopy (CC),the gold standard, for detection of bladder tumors.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Forty-five patients suspected to have bladder neoplasms were evaluated prospectively.They underwent transabdominal US, followed by VC and CC. We compared sensitivity and specificity of US and VC and their positive and negative likelihood ratios. US and VC detection rates for tumors <or= 1 cm and tumors larger than 1 cm were compared. Histologic grade and multiplicity were correlated to detection rate.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Laparoscopic partial cystectomy is performed in selected patients with isolated diseases, such as bladder endometriosis, pheochromocytoma, leiomyoma, and malignant bladder tumors. Laparoscopic partial cystectomy is indicated for a solitary bladder tumor that is distant from the bladder neck, the ureteral orifices, and the trigone, to allow a resection margin of 1 to 2 cm. INTRODUCTION: Flexible cystoscopy is the gold standard for diagnosis and surveillance of bladder carcinoma. Most flexible cystoscopes feature a working channel allowing for bladder biopsy and diathermy if a suspicious lesion is observed. However, the working channel permits only small instruments which limit the volume of material retrieved for histological analysis.
