Disorders of Pigmentation.

Disorders of pigmentation encompass a wide range of conditions categorized into hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation, and depigmentation, each with distinct etiologies, clinical presentations, and implications. This article outlines the pathophysiology, clinical features, diagnostic approaches, and management strategies for these pigmentary disorders for primary care physicians. Recognizing systemic associations and rare presentations is also essential for primary care physicians to diagnose and guide treatment or dermatologic referral.

Disorders of pigmentation.

Skin color is highly individual and the variations are controlled by numerous genes. The different skin colors result from the size and numb … to abnormal skin pigmentation. Immunologic or toxic mediated destructions of melanocytes can end in pigmentation disorders. Disorders of pigmentation are classified in hypo- or hyperpigmentation which can occur as a genetic or acquired disease. They can manifest locally or diffuse. Congenital hypopigmentation can be restricted to the skin as in piebaldism or they repres …

Common pigmentation disorders.

Common causes of hyperpigmentation include postinflammatory hyperpigmentation, melasma, solar lentigines, ephelides (freckles), and café-au-lait macules. Although most hyperpigmented lesions are benign and the diagnosis is straightforward, it is important to exclude melanoma and its precursors and to identify skin manifestations of systemic disease. Treatment options for postinflammatory hyperpigmentation, melasma, solar lentigines, and ephelides include the use of topical agents, chemical peels, cryotherapy, or laser therapy. Caf&-au-lait macules are amenable to surgical excision or laser tre

Genetic disorders of pigmentation.

More than 127 loci are actually known to affect pigmentation in mouse when they are mutated. From embryogenesis to transfer of melanin to the keratinocytes or melanocytes survival, any defect is able to alter the pigmentation process. Many gene mutations are now described, but the function of their product protein and their implication in melanogenesis are only partially understood. Each genetic pigmentation disorder brings new clues in the understanding of the pigmentation process. According to the main genodermatoses known to induce hypo- or hyperpigmentation, we emphasize in this review the

[Laser treatment of pigmentation disorders].

Pigmentation disorders are among the most common cutaneous changes and occur in up to 60% of all people. They can be genetic or acquired, functionally or cosmetically disturbing, or the expression of a medical disorder. The best treatment options for hyperpigmentation are usually lasers and intense pulsed light (IPL). However, they can also worsen some conditions and are occasionally associated with side effects. A correct diagnosis is therefore essential, taking into account the skin type, the type of pigmentation and how deep the pigmentation is located in the skin. The most common indicatio…

Pigmentation Disorders in the Elderly.

Aging skin is subject to morphological change due to both intrinsic (skin tone, genetics, endogenous hormones) and extrinsic (chronic sun exposure, medications, exogenous pigments) factors. The broad spectrum of transformation includes both hypo- and hyperpigmentation. Although cutaneous pigmentary disorders are common in younger individuals, certain disorders are more prevalent in the geriatric population. This article reviews the epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical appearance, treatment, and prognosis of pigmentary lesions that are predominant in the elderly.

Pigmentation Disorders: Diagnosis and Management.

Pigmentation disorders are commonly diagnosed, evaluated, and treated in primary care practices. Typical hyperpigmentation disorders include postinflammatory hyperpigmentation, melasma, solar lentigines, ephelides (freckles), and café au lait macules. These conditions are generally benign but can be distressing to patients. Appropriate dermatologic history, skin examination, and skin biopsy, when appropriate, can help exclude melanoma and its precursors. In addition to addressing the underlying condition, hyperpigmentation is treated with topical agents, chemical peels, cryotherapy, light or l…

[Pigmentation disorders in systemic sclerodermia].

Skin pigmentation changes in systemic sclerosis have been known since the end of the last century. Many different aspects have been described. We report the case of a 48-year-old man with severe progressive systemic sclerosis who presented many different types of pigmentation changes of skin, but particularly a severe hyperpigmentation. This clinical observation suggests that local factors, including repetitive friction, trauma or variations in skin temperature, may influence the development, distribution and severity of pigmentation abnormalities in patients with systemic sclerosis. Pigmentation disorders: hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation.

Pigmentation disorders include a large number of heterogeneous conditions that are usually characterized by altered melanocyte density, melanin concentration, or both, and result in altered pigmentation of the skin. Some of these disorders are extremely common (melasma, vitiligo), whereas others are rare. In this contribution, we review the most common pigmentation disorders that appear on the face. These lesions, even though mostly asymptomatic, have a great impact on a patient's quality of life.

[Molecular basis of pigmentation disorders in skin diseases].

Skin disorders connected with pigmentation disturbances are most frequent dermatological problems. Different mechanisms are involved in these changes, mainly those which regulate melanocyte function. In this work we focused on molecular basis of pigmentation disorders in dermatological diseases that present clinically with hyperpigmentation (lentigo senilis, Riehl melanosis, seborrhoic keratosis, fibroma, café-au-lait patches melasma, atopic dermatitis) or hypopigmentation (vitiligo, albinism).
