OBJECTIVE: To assess parental decision making in the acquisition of an infant walker and the influences surrounding that decision.
DESIGN/METHODS: Caretakers of children attending a residents' continuity practice during a one month period were invited to participate in a structured interview to assess various aspects of infant safety. Ten questions specifically addressed infant walkers and the decision to acquire one; seven questions collected demographic data.
RESULTS: One hundred and fifty four primary caretakers participated. Of these, 77% (n = 119) of caretakers used infant walkers for t…

Swivel walkers were commonly prescribed for children with complete thoracic lesion myelomeningocele in the 1970s and 80s, when the incidence of spina bifida in the UK was of the order of 3 per 100,000 live births. The advent of reciprocal walking orthoses provided a more suitable alternative for those with good upper limb and trunk function, and swivel walkers were then used primarily for very young or more severely disabled patients. Pre-natal screening has dramatically reduced the incidence of spina bifida in the UK and subsequently swivel walkers have been used in a wider range of pathology…

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic toe walking (ITW) is a diagnosis of exclusion and represents a spectrum of severity. Treatment for ITW includes observation and a variety of conservative treatment methods, with surgical intervention often reserved for severe cases. Previous studies reviewing treatment outcomes are often difficult to interpret secondary to a mixture of case severity. The goal of this study was to review surgical outcomes in patients with severe ITW who had failed prior conservative treatment, as well as determine differences in outcomes based on the type of surgery performed.

BACKGROUND: Few guidelines are available to assist clinicians with assessment of whether a patient is a household or community walker.
AIM: … ty.
METHODS: Participants were classified into one of six walking classifications (three household walkers and three community walkers) and K-BBS, UMCT, and gait velocity were evaluated. The optimal cut-off scores for walking classification were determined based on received operator characteristic (ROC) analyses.
RESULTS: The cut-off value of K-BBS for …

Gait symmetry between both legs is a typical hallmark of healthy walking. In contrast, several pathologies induce asymmetry in the gait patt … interventions described in the literature that can induce asymmetry in the gait pattern of healthy walkers. We perform a systematic literature research by exploring five databases, i.e., Pubmed, Embase, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and Scopus. Eight children, who needed walkers to ambulate and who were able to use either anterior or posterior walkers, were selected for a comparative study of both types of walker. Data for gait analysis, using high-speed cinematography, were collected to determine stride length, time in double support and velocity. Trunk, hip and knee angles were also measured during four phases of the gait cycle. The results demonstrated significant improvements in both postural alignment and gait characteristics with the posterior walker.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic neuropathic foot ulcers are a risk factor for lower leg amputation. Many experts recommend offloading with fibreglass total contact casting, removable cast walkers, and irremovable cast walkers as a way to treat these ulcers.
METHODS: We completed a health technology assessment, which included an evaluation of clinical benefits and harms, value for money, and patient preferences for offloading devices. We performed a systematic literature search on August 17, 2016, to identify randomized controlled trials that compared fibreglass total contact casting, removable cast walk…

Mary Broadfoot Walker (1888-1974) was the first to demonstrate the 'Mary Walker effect' describing the weakness of other muscle groups following release of the arteriovenous occlusion of an unrelated exercising muscle group in patients with myasthenia gravis, which led to the search for a circulating causative agent for myasthenia gravis. She was the first to clearly demonstrate that strength temporarily improved in patients with myasthenia gravis with physostigmine or Prostigmin (neostigmine). This dramatic treatment response has been erroneously termed the 'Mary Walker effect'. Further, she

The goal of the Agile Walker is to improve the outdoor mobility of healthy elderly people with some mobility limitations. It is a newly developed, all-terrain walker, equipped with an electric drive system and speed control that can assists elderly people to walk outdoors or to hike. The walker has a unique product design with an attractive look that will appeal to "active-agers" population. This paper describes product design requirements and the development process of the Agile Walker, its features and some preliminary testing results.

OBJECTIVE: to determine community midwives' knowledge, attitudes and practice with regard to baby walkers.
DESIGN: survey, using questionnaires.
SETTING: primary care, East Midlands, UK.
PARTICIPANTS: Sixty-five community midwives participating in a cluster randomised controlled trial to reduce baby walker use.
FINDINGS: there was a 94% response. Seventy per cent of the midwives, felt that it was part of their role to discuss baby walkers, and 62% felt that giving advice about walkers before birth acceptable. The midwives had a limited knowledge of baby walker injury risk and only one midw…

Although assistive devices, such as walkers and canes are often prescribed to aid in balance control, recent studies have suggested that such devices may actually increase risk of falling. In this study, we investigated one possible mechanism: the potential for walkers or canes to interfere with, or constrain, lateral movement of the feet and thereby impede execution of compensatory stepping reactions during lateral loss of balance. Lateral stepping reactions were evoked, in 10 healthy young adults (ages 22-27 years), by means of sudden unpredictable medio-lateral support surface translation. …

The Dandy-Walker malformation is the most frequent cerebral malformation. It is defined by hypoplasia and upward rotation of the vermis cerebelli, a cystic enlargement of the fourth ventricle and in total an enlarged posterior fossa with cranially shifted position of the lateral sinus, tentorium and torcula herophili. This malformation was first described by Dandy and Blackfan in 1914 then supplemented again by Taggart and Walker in 1942. The current description as Dandy-Walker malformation was introduced in 1954 by Bender. In addition to these classical findings, the Dandy-Walker malformation
