[Proceedings: Long-term therapy with antibiotics in chronic bronchitis].

Longterm therapy of chronic bacterial bronchitis assumes two forms: (a) therapy of acute exacerbations, and (b) continuous longterm prophylaxis, chiefly during the 4-7 winter months. Longterm prophylaxis should be confined exclusively to patients with two or more severe annual exacerbations. The commonest pathogens, Haemophilus influenzae and pneumococci, are usually sensitive to ampicillin and amoxycillin, cotrimoxazole (Bactrim or Eusaprim) and tetracyclines.

A Quantitative Lung Mucin Score to Identify Chronic Bronchitis.

BACKGROUND: We previously demonstrated that sputum total mucin concentration is an objective marker for chronic bronchitis (CB). This current study introduces a novel Mucin Quantitative Score (MUCQ) that combines total mucin concentration and mucin composition to improve the assessment of risk, onset of clinically diagnosed disease, and progression of muco-obstructive lung diseases. METHODS: Patients from the SPIROMICS (SubPopulations and InteRmediate Outcome Measures in COPD Study) cohort were classified as having CB, or not, based on clinical questionnaires. Using the measured total mucin,

New bronchoscopic treatment modalities for patients with chronic bronchitis.

Chronic bronchitis is a chronic, progressive disease that is difficult to treat. Despite much effort, patients remain highly symptomatic. Currently, a number of innovative bronchoscopic treatments for this disease are under investigation. Liquid nitrogen metered cryospray, bronchial rheoplasty and balloon desobstruction all aim to destroy the hyperplastic goblet cells and excess submucous glands using different strategies. These therapies are in an early phase of clinical research and larger randomised controlled trials are needed to confirm the pilot data available and to evaluate the treatme

Chronic bronchitis: a retrospective clinicopathologic study of 25 cases.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in the industrialized and in the developing countries. Chronic bronchitis (CB) is one the three COPD clinico-pathological entities that in 2009 were estimated to be diagnosed in 9.9 million Americans. It is characterized by inflammation of the "bronchial tree" that results in tissue swelling and excessive secretions of mucus into the bronchi, with progressive airflow limitation. Our study aims to reveal the main morphological aspects of CB in our casuistry and to evaluate their correlation with

Rufloxacin once daily in acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis.

In this open study the efficacy and tolerability of rufloxacin in a single dose of 400 mg the first day and 200 mg the nine consecutive days was studied in 26 patients with an acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis. Twenty-two patients were evaluable for efficacy. Four patients stopped treatment prematurely after five days because of clinical cure. At the enrollment visit a pathogen was isolated in the sputum sample in 19 of 22 evaluable patients. The predominant pathogens were Streptococcus pneumoniae and Moraxella catarrhalis. In 17 of these 19 bacteriologically evaluable patients the init

Chronic bronchitis in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland.

A study of chronic bronchitis was carried out on 195 ex-servicemen from Victoria New South Wales and Queensland. Exacerbations of chest symptoms were commonly found and chronic bronchitis was in important cause of haemoptysis. Weather conditions, especially cold weather, affected chest symptoms and early age of starting to smoke affected the incidence of severe bronchitis. The clinical profiles of the cases studied were similar to those in some of the reports from Canada and Britain.

C FTR variants are associated with chronic bronchitis in smokers.

INTRODUCTION: Loss-of-function variants in both copies of the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene cause cystic fibrosis (CF); however, there is evidence that reduction in CFTR function due to the presence of one deleterious variant can have clinical consequences. Here, we hypothesise that CFTR variants in individuals with a history of smoking are associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and related phenotypes. METHODS: Whole-genome sequencing was performed through the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute TOPMed (TransOmics in Precision Medi

An underestimated cause of chronic cough: The Protracted Bacterial Bronchitis.

Chronic cough in childhood is associated with a high morbidity and decreased quality of life. Protracted bacterial bronchitis (PBB) seems to be the second most common cause of chronic cough in children under 6 years of age. Its main clinical feature is represented by wet cough that worsens when changing posture and improves after the introduction of antibiotics. Currently, the mainstay of PBB treatment is a 2-week therapy with a high dose of antibiotics, such as co-amoxiclav, to eradicate the infection and restore epithelial integrity. It is very important to contemplate this disease in a chil

[The prevalence of chronic bronchitis in adults living in the center of Gumushane].

INTRODUCTION: Chronic bronchitis and emphysema are major components of chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD). The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of chronic bronchitis 20 years and over living in the center of Gumushane and to analyze the risk factors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study is targeted to reach 373 people who represent the center of Gumushane, 368 (98.6%) people have been reached. Participants were filled modified version of the questionnaire created by the Medical Research Council by face-to-face interview technique. RESULTS: The prevalence of chronic br

[Applications of a rat model of chronic bronchitis on toxicity of PM2.5].

OBJECTIVE: To study the acute toxicity of PM2.5 to the rats with chronic bronchitis and the control rats and the difference between the model rats and the control rats on PM2.5 toxicity. METHODS: With the use of an intratracheal instillation, both groups were exposed to suspensions of PM2.5. After three times, the levels of ALB, LDH, AKP, MDA and GSH in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) were analyzed. RESULTS: PM2.5 could induce the acute toxicity to both model rats and control rats, and dose-response relationships were observed in all indexes. In model rats, the levels of ALB, LDH, AKP, a

Evidence of bacterial infection in acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis.

The frequency with which bacterial infection causes exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) may depend on the dominant pathology present; patients with chronic bronchitis are more susceptible to bacterial bronchial infections than those at the emphysema or asthma ends of the spectrum. However, impairment in respiratory function may be very important in governing the outcome of an exacerbation. Placebo-controlled trials have provided conflicting evidence of the efficacy of antibiotics in acute exacerbations. Overall, there is a significant benefit, particularly in certain

Airway inflammation and etiology of acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: The etiologic role of bacterial pathogens isolated from sputum culture in 40 to 50% of acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis (AECB) is controversial. If bacterial pathogens cause these AECB, they should be associated with greater neutrophilic airway inflammation than pathogen-negative exacerbations. DESIGN: This hypothesis was tested by comparing levels of interleukin (IL)-8, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha, and neutrophil elastase (NE) in 81 sputum samples obtained from 45 patients with AECB. Four groups were compared. In the first three groups, nontypable Haemophilus
