Effect of various properties of hydroxyapatite ceramics on osteoconduction and stability.

Hydroxyapatite ceramics (HA) are widely used for clinical applications as a bone substitute or dental implant because they have been shown to be biocompatible and exhibit excellent osteoconductivity when grafted into the bone tissue. However, the influence of the physical properties of HA on the osteoconduction and stability remains unclear. We examined here the effect of various properties of HA granules on osteoconduction and stability using 6 types of HA granules. The HA granules were grafted into the rabbit tibia and the initial bone formation and long-term stability of the new bone were s…

Osteogenic response to porous hydroxyapatite ceramics under the skin of dogs.

Soft tissue reactions to two materials of different microstructure made with porous and dense hydroxyapatite ceramic granules, were compared in this study. Each was implanted subcutaneously in the abdomen of 10 dogs. The implants were removed 1, 3 and 6 months after implantation, and examined by light microscopy. Heterotopic bone formation was only evident around porous hydroxyapatite ceramic granules in 6 of the 10 animals after 3 months, and in all cases after 6 months, but never around dense granules. These findings suggested that cellular differentiation and induction of osteogenesis may b

[Significance of synthetic calcium phosphate ceramics as a bone replacement material].

With reference to the chemical and crystallographic differences, the line is drawn against bone substitute material produced from biological material. Extensive animal experiments demonstrated the good healing properties when using calcium phosphate ceramics in bony defects. In the long term, there was more new bone formed after filling up the defect with calcium phosphate ceramics than when using autologous bone grafts. Clinically, there is an indication for using this material to fill up bone cysts and defects if there is enough time for biodegradation; in other cases, a mixture using an aut…

Outcomes of Ceramic-On-Ceramic Bearing Total Hip Arthroplasty: A Minimum 10-Year Follow-Up Study.

BACKGROUND: Although the fourth generation of ceramics has demonstrated excellent clinical results 5 to 6 years postoperatively, concerns over ceramic fracture and squeaking persist and longer-term follow-up (minimum 10 years) studies are warranted. Our study aimed to evaluate the minimum 10-year clinical outcomes and bearing-specific complications of ceramic-on-ceramic (CoC) total hip arthroplasties. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated all patients who underwent primary delta CoC total hip arthroplasty in our institution between January 2004 and February 2013. Demographics, surgical techni…

Adverse Soft-Tissue Reaction After Ceramic-On-Ceramic Bearing Fracture Mimicking a Periprosthetic Joint Infection.

Prosthetic failure secondary to bearing fracture remains a potential complication in ceramic-on-ceramic total hip arthroplasty. We report the unusual presentation of a ceramic component fracture of a total hip arthroplasty performed 17 years ago that mimicked a periprosthetic joint infection. This case was managed based on the current guidelines and algorithms recommended for periprosthetic joint infection management. Histologic examination of periprosthetic tissue revealed an adverse inflammatory soft-tissue reaction to the ceramic fragments released from the fracture site. Our case highlight

A Dual-Phase Ceramic Membrane with Extremely High H2 Permeation Flux Prepared by Autoseparation of a Ceramic Precursor.

A novel concept for the preparation of multiphase composite ceramics based on demixing of a single ceramic precursor has been developed and used for the synthesis of a dual-phase H2 -permeable ceramic membrane. The precursor BaCe0.5 Fe0.5 O3-δ decomposes on calcination at 1370 °C for 10 h into two thermodynamically stable oxides with perovskite structures: the cerium-rich oxide BaCe0.85 Fe0.15 O3-δ (BCF8515) and the iron-rich oxide BaCe0.15 Fe0.85 O3-δ (BCF1585), 50 mol % each. In the resulting dual-phase material, the orthorhombic perovskite BCF8515 acts as the main proton conductor and the c…

Low aseptic loosening and revision rate in Zweymüller-Plus total hip arthroplasty with ceramic-on-ceramic bearings.

UNLABELLED: A recent comparative study reported lower revision rate and higher survival in ceramic-on-ceramic (CoC) than in metal-on-metal (MoM) coupling in Zweymüller-Plus THA. We retrospectively studied 87 consecutive patients (94 hips), who primarily received Zweymüller-Plus THA (SL-Plus stem, ceramic 28-mm ball head, Bicon cup) with third-generation CoC bearing surfaces for osteoarthritis. Survival, revision and osteolysis rate were studied and compared to those observed in historical series from this institution with the same THA and MoM articulation. The mean ± SD follow-up was 7.4 ± 1.7

Complications of Ceramic-on-Ceramic Total Hip Arthroplasty With Large Heads: 10-Year Minimum Follow-Up.

BACKGROUND: The fourth-generation ceramic bearings allow the use of larger femoral heads, but inevitably create thinner liners, raising concerns regarding liner fracture and long-term biological responses. We extended our study to evaluate late dislocation, ceramic-related complications, and long-term clinical and radiographic outcomes more than 10 years after ceramic-on-ceramic total hip arthroplasty (THA). METHODS: We conducted a prospective multicenter study of cementless THA using a 32/36-mm ceramic bearing. From April 2010 to February 2012, 246 patients (274 THAs) were enrolled. We evalu

Early Short-Term Postoperative Mechanical Failures of Current Ceramic-on-Ceramic Bearing Total Hip Arthroplasties.

Although ceramic-on-ceramic (CoC) bearings have been shown to produce the smallest amount of wear volume in vitro as well as in vivo studies when used for total hip arthroplasties (THA), concerns about the failure of these bearing surfaces persist due to early failures observed after short postoperative time. In this study, an exhaustive analysis of the early failure occurred on the new generation of ceramic bearings, consisting of a composite alumina matrix-based material reinforced with yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia (Y-TZP) particles, chromium dioxide, and strontium crystals, was per

Using Ceramic-on-Ceramic Bearings in Total Hip Arthroplasty Necessitating 44- or 46-mm Metal Shells.

Ceramic-on-ceramic articulation shows the lowest wear, with a low incidence of osteolysis. A small cup limits options regarding liner thickness and femoral implant size. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the safety of a 4-mm-thick ceramic liner and the outcomes of cementless total hip arthroplasty using a 44- or 46-mm metal shell and a ceramic-on-ceramic bearing at mid- to long-term follow-up. Between May 2003 and June 2008, 80 patients (88 hips) who had hip osteoarthritis and a hypoplastic acetabulum underwent cementless total hip arthroplasty using a 44- or 46-mm metal shell and a ce

Investigation of the influence of gastric acid on the surface roughness of ceramic materials of metal-ceramic restorations. An in vitro study.

The rehabilitation of eroded teeth in patients suffering from bulimia nervosa generally includes ceramics. This study compared the roughness of three ceramics before and after exposure to simulated vomit solution (SVS) with a pH of 3.8. Surface roughness parameters Ra, RMS, and AH were calculated using atomic force microscopy before and after exposure to SVS (novel peristaltic pump for 24 hours at 37°C) and were analyzed statistically. Apart from the initial high AH values of the glass-ceramic, none of the parameters evaluated were statistically significantly different after acid exposure. Und…
