Longitudinal determinants of thriving in Puerto Rican climate crisis migrants on the U.S. mainland: A structural equation model.

Climate-related disasters pose significant risks to mental health and well-being globally. Individuals from disaster-prone regions, such as Puerto Rico, are at even greater risk. The devastating effects of recurrent hurricanes, compounded with pre-existing structural disparities (e.g., poverty and corruption), can further exacerbate psychosocial vulnerabilities and drive mass migration to the United States mainland. Most research on mental health among climate migrants focuses on risks, whereas promotive factors such as thriving are often overlooked. In the present study, we estimated a longit

Ensemble modeling of aquatic plant invasions and economic cost analysis in China under climate change scenarios.

Pistia stratiotes, Eichhornia crassipes, Alternanthera philoxeroides, and Cabomba caroliniana are officially recognized as invasive aquatic plants in China. Accurately predicting their invasion dynamics under climate change is crucial for the future safety of aquatic ecosystems. Compared to single prediction models, ensemble models that integrate multiple algorithms provide more accurate forecasts. However, there has been a notable lack of research utilizing ensemble models to collectively predict the invasive regions of these four species in China. To address this gap, we collected and analyz

Climate Change and Health Risk Perceptions of Arkansas Small Farmers through the Application of the Health Belief Model.

Climate change poses health risks to Arkansas small farmers. Farmers face an increased risk of heat-related illnesses (e.g., heat exhaustion, cerebral vascular accidents, and cardiovascular issues) and work-related injuries, death, and mental health conditions due to climate change. This cross-sectional survey employed the health belief model (HBM) as its theoretical framework. This study aimed to assess the health status of small farmers, climate change beliefs, adaptive agricultural practices, and the perceived effects of climate change on health. Study data were collected using non-probabil

Effect of climate factors on the incidence of hand, foot, and mouth disease in Malaysia: A generalized additive mixed model.

Climate change is one of the critical determinants affecting life cycles and transmission of most infectious agents, including malaria, cholera, dengue fever, hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD), and the recent Corona-virus pandemic. HFMD has been associated with a growing number of outbreaks resulting in fatal complications since the late 1990s. The outbreaks may result from a combination of rapid population growth, climate change, socioeconomic changes, and other lifestyle changes. However, the modeling of climate variability and HFMD remains unclear, particularly in statistical theory deve

Applicability of the universal thermal climate index for predicting the outbreaks of respiratory tract infections: a mathematical modeling approach.

Respiratory tract infections (RTI) are one of the most frequent reasons for medical consultations. As air temperature decreases, but also in connection with other meteorological parameters, evident seasonal fluctuations in the number of consultations for RTI can be observed. The Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI) is a complex meteorological index derived from an analysis of human thermal balance that depends on air temperature, air humidity, and wind speed. Our aims were to check if this index, although never used before for that purpose, is an adequate tool for forecasting seasonal increa

Testing the effects of safety climate and disruptive children behavior on school bus drivers performance: A multilevel model.

The study was designed to test a multilevel path model whose variables exert opposing effects on school bus drivers' performance. Whereas departmental safety climate was expected to improve driving safety, the opposite was true for in-vehicle disruptive children behavior. The driving safety path in this model consists of increasing risk-taking practices starting with safety shortcuts leading to rule violations and to near-miss events. The study used a sample of 474 school bus drivers in rural areas, driving children to school and school-related activities. Newly developed scales for measuring

Modeling relationships between climate and the frequency of human plague cases in the southwestern United States, 1960-1997.

The relationships between climatic variables and the frequency of human plague cases (1960-1997) were modeled by Poisson regression for two adjoining regions in northeastern Arizona and northwestern New Mexico. Model outputs closely agreed with the numbers of cases actually observed, suggesting that temporal variations in plague risk can be estimated by monitoring key climatic variables, most notably maximum daily summer temperature values and time-lagged (1 and 2 year) amounts of late winter (February-March) precipitation. Significant effects also were observed for time-lagged (1 year) summer

Improving the prediction of arbovirus outbreaks: A comparison of climate-driven models for West Nile virus in an endemic region of the United States.

Models that forecast the timing and location of human arboviral disease have the potential to make mosquito control and disease prevention more effective. A common approach is to use statistical time-series models that predict disease cases as lagged functions of environmental variables. However, the simplifying assumptions required for standard modeling approaches may not capture important aspects of complex, non-linear transmission cycles. Here, we compared a set of alternative models of human West Nile virus (WNV) in 2004-2017 in South Dakota, USA. We used county-level logistic regressions

Predicting the potential distribution of Atractylodes lancea in China under CMIP6 climate scenarios using an optimized MaxEnt model.

Atractylodes lancea is an important medicinal plant in China, and climate change may affect wild-resource conservation and cultivation planning. However, its current potential ecological suitability, future range dynamics, and relationship with traditional or reported producing regions remain insufficiently clarified under optimized species distribution modelling and CMIP6 climate scenarios. We used 220 occurrence records and environmental variables related to climate, topography, vegetation, and soil to predict the current and future potential suitable habitats of A. lancea in China with an o

Climate-Driven Distribution and Ecological Niche Modeling of Three Anopheles Species in China Using the Biomod2 Ensemble Framework.

This study aimed to project the current and future suitable habitats of three primary malaria vectors in China-An. lesteri, An. minimus, and An. sinensis-using an ensemble modeling approach. We simulated their geographical distributions under current and future climates (SSP126, SSP245, SSP585) using the Biomod2 platform with 19 bioclimatic variables and elevation. The ensemble models achieved high predictive performance, as reflected by AUC and TSS values. Environmental drivers were species-specific: An. lesteri was primarily influenced by elevation, temperature seasonality (Bio4), and season

The burden of hand, foot, and mouth disease attributable to climate variability: A nationwide time-series modeling study in Japan.

Substantial evidence suggests that meteorological variables are associated with hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) incidence; however, geographic variation in these associations and in the corresponding attributable burden remains insufficiently characterized. We conducted a nationwide time-series analysis to quantify the burden of HFMD attributable to non-optimal ambient temperature and relative humidity in Japan, while examining between-prefecture variation in the estimated associations. For each of the 47 prefectures (2000-2019), exposure-lag-response functions for temperature and humidit
