Use of an algorithm in choosing abdominoplasty techniques.

OBJECTIVE: to validate an algorithm for the choice of the abdominoplasty surgical technique among the five approaches established in the literature, according to the characteristics of the abdominal wall. METHODS: we conducted a retrospective study of 245 patients undergoing abdominoplasty, for whom the method of choice of the surgical technique was the proposed algorithm, based on the degree of abdominal flaccidity determined by bimanual maneuver. We studied its applications and conveniences, as well as the complications inherent in each group studied. RESULTS: according to the algorithm us

An algorithm for selection of full endoscopic approach for symptomatic nerve root decompression.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Both Transforaminal (TF) and Interlaminar (IL) endoscopic approaches are established techniques of decompression for lumbar compressive radiculopathy. In the absence of adequate literature, there is always some dilemma in selecting the approach for endoscopic decompression leading to long learning curves and high chances of inadequate decompression, iatrogenic instability, dural tear, or dysesthesia. Hence authors propose a new surgical nomenclature and algorithm for selection of endoscopic approach. METHODS: This retrospective study included 396 of 626 consecutive patient

Machine learning quantitatively characterizes the deformation and destruction of explosive molecules.

Although explosives have been widely used in mines, road development, old building demolishing, and munition explosions; currently, how chemical bonds between atoms break and recombine, how the molecular structure is deformed and destroyed, how the reaction product molecules are formed, and the details for this rapid change process in explosive reactions are not yet fully understood, which limits the full use of explosive energy and safer use of explosives. This paper presents a quantitative model of molecular structure deformation using machine learning algorithms as well as a qualitative mod

Evaluating the efficacy of local anesthetic techniques during scalp microneedling.

INTRODUCTION: An increasing interest in minimally invasive procedures hassled to a demand for an effective local anesthetic algorithm. The scalp presents a challenge in achieving effective anesthesia due to the presence of hair shafts. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of different methods during a microneedling procedure, including 25 mg lidocaine and 25 mg prilocaine cream, skin spray with 10% lidocaine, and cold gel compresses. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty-two men aged between 20 and 50 years underwent three microneedling treatments, each using a different method of anesthesia. The

A stress-driven model for bone density evolution in rats during orthodontic tooth movement.

Orthodontic bone remodeling simulations offer a scientific foundation for optimizing treatment plans and predicting outcomes in orthodontics. Since alveolar bone exhibits unique regional responses and high sensitivity to tensile and compressive stresses, traditional models often fail to account for these characteristics, limiting their accuracy in predicting the microstructural changes of alveolar bone under external forces. To address this issue, this study proposes a bone remodeling model based on equivalent stress derived from the Mohr strength theory as the mechanical stimulus. The model d

[The Swollen Leg in Vascular Medical Practice].

In case of an acute leg swelling a deep leg vein thrombosis needs to be excluded. In order to do this, compression sonography and the D-dimer-test are applied in the framework of an established diagnostic algorithm. The ensuing therapy consists in anticoagulation and compression. In case of a chronic leg swelling anamnesis and a clinical check-up often lead to a differential diagnosis. Chronic venous insufficiency is a generic term for a disturbed venous backflow. It is caused by an obstruction or an antegrade or retrograde flow insufficiency. Most common diseases in this context are varicosis

Enhancing security and efficiency in healthcare cloud computing with blockchain integration and LZW compression: The BICCM framework.

Modern healthcare system produces large amount of sensitive clinical data, but no existing framework simultaneously addresses and satisfy rigorous security guarantees, storage efficiency and the throughput demand of clinical operations/transactions. All existing framework addresses these requirements in isolation such as cloud architectures lack cryptographic immutability and standalone blockchain systems suffer by high gas costs and block size limitations. To resolve this gap, we present the Blockchain-Integrated Cloud Compression Model (BICCM) a three-tier architecture that combines (i) Ethe

Current Evidence on the Treatment of Median Arcuate Ligament Syndrome: A Comprehensive Review.

Median arcuate ligament syndrome (MALS) is an uncommon and controversial disorder characterized by chronic abdominal symptoms associated with extrinsic compression of the celiac artery (CA) and adjacent celiac plexus by the median arcuate ligament (MAL). Although anatomical CA compression is relatively common, only a small proportion of individuals develop clinically significant disease, making accurate diagnosis and patient selection fundamental to successful treatment. This narrative review critically evaluates the current evidence on the management of MALS, focusing on patient selection, th

Magnetic resonance elastography of liver and spleen: Methods and applications.

The viscoelastic properties of the liver and spleen can be assessed with magnetic resonance elastography (MRE). Several actuators, MRI acquisition sequences and reconstruction algorithms have been proposed for this purpose. Reproducible results are obtained, especially when the examination is performed in standard conditions with the patient fasting. Accurate staging of liver fibrosis can be obtained by measuring liver stiffness or elasticity with MRE. Moreover, emerging evidence shows that assessing the tissue viscous parameters with MRE is useful for characterizing liver inflammation, non-al

Nonoperative versus surgical management of small (less than 3 cm), asymptomatic popliteal artery aneurysms.

Popliteal artery aneurysms represent a common pathology that vascular surgeons are often confronted with. However, several issues remain incompletely understood, including indications for intervention and optimal methods of treatment. In the following article, our discussants debate the appropriate management of small popliteal artery aneurysms. Further complicating this discussion is the unclear relationship between popliteal artery aneurysm diameter and subsequent complications. Whereas with abdominal aortic aneurysms diameter is linked to rupture risk, it is less clear with popliteal artery

A Framework for Compressive On-Chip Action Potential Recording.

Scaling neural recording systems to thousands of channels creates extreme bandwidth demands, posing a challenge for resource-constrained, implantable devices. This work introduces an adaptive, multi-stage compression framework for high-bandwidth neural interfaces. The system combines a Wired-OR analog-to-digital compressive readout with a digital core that adaptively requantizes, selectively samples, and encodes the neural signals. Although prior work suggests that action potential recordings can be re-quantized to approximately the signal-to-noise (SNR) number of bits without significantly de

Modeling the onset and propagation of trabecular bone microdamage during low-cycle fatigue.

Relatively small amounts of microdamage have been suggested to have a major effect on the mechanical properties of bone. A significant reduction in mechanical properties (e.g. modulus) can occur even before the appearance of microcracks. This study uses a novel non-linear microdamaging finite-element (FE) algorithm to simulate the low-cycle fatigue behavior of high-density trabecular bone. We aimed to investigate if diffuse microdamage accumulation and concomitant modulus reduction, without the need for complete trabecular strut fracture, may be an underlining mechanism for low-cycle fatigue f

Accelerated and memory-efficient clutter filtering toward online-compatible ultrasound localization microscopy via compressed-matrix randomized QRD.

Ultrasound localization microscopy (ULM) enables super-resolution visualization of cerebral microvasculature; however, its clinical translation is hindered by the substantial computational burden of singular value decomposition (SVD)-based clutter filtering. To address this issue, we propose Compressed-Matrix Randomized QR Decomposition (CM-rQRD) as an accelerated and memory-efficient filtering framework. By integrating a Compressed-Matrix strategy into rQRD-based methods, the computational complexity of the decomposition step is substantially reduced. Specifically, the proposed methods achiev

Extension and evaluation of a near-end listening enhancement algorithm for listeners with normal and impaired hearing.

In many applications in which speech is played back via a sound reinforcement system such as public address systems and mobile phones, speech intelligibility is degraded by additive environmental noise. A possible solution to maintain high intelligibility in noise is to pre-process the speech signal based on the estimated noise power at the position of the listener. The previously proposed AdaptDRC algorithm [Schepker, Rennies, and Doclo (2015). J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 138, 2692-2706] applies both frequency shaping and dynamic range compression under an equal-power constraint, where the processing

Resuscitator's perceptions and time for corrective ventilation steps during neonatal resuscitation.

BACKGROUND: The 2010 neonatal resuscitation program (NRP) guidelines incorporate ventilation corrective steps (using the mnemonic--MRSOPA) into the resuscitation algorithm. The perception of neonatal providers, time taken to perform these maneuvers or the effectiveness of these additional steps has not been evaluated. METHODS: Using two simulated clinical scenarios of varying degrees of cardiovascular compromise--perinatal asphyxia with (i) bradycardia (heart rate--40 min(-1)) and (ii) cardiac arrest, 35 NRP certified providers were evaluated for preference to performing these corrective meas
