Necrotizing fasciitis is a rare and rapidly progressive infection characterized by necrosis of the superficial fascia and spread on the surrounding skin or muscles, which can be fatal. It usually occurs in the limbs, abdominal wall and perineum. In this retrospective review, the authors present 15 patients with cervical necrotizing fasciitis. The patient mean age was 54.7 years and they had one or more comorbid health problems. Five of them had descending necrotizing mediastinitis and three had progressive sepsis with toxic shock syndrome. Broad-spectrum intravenous antibiotic therapy was admi

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing fasciitis is a severe soft tissue infection characterized by rapidly progressing necrosis, involving subcutaneous tissues. This rare condition carries a high mortality rate and requires prompt diagnosis and urgent treatment with radical debridement and antibiotics; but early diagnosis, which is essential to successful treatment, remains a challenge.
METHODS: Physical examination findings, preoperative and operative findings, histopathological results of the structure, and follow-up results of the patient are discussed with related reports.
RESULTS: A 15-month old girl

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a serious condition with infection of the muscular fascia causing rapidly spreading necrosis. NF rarely affects children, and we here report two paediatric cases of NF. The first developed NF after a joint puncture, the other after surgical extirpation of a lymph node. Both were treated with antibiotics, human immunoglobulin, hyperbaric oxygen and repeated surgery and survived. In contrast to adults, children with NF often have no underlying chronic illness. The most frequent access point is varicella zoster ulcers.

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) describes a life threatening soft tissue infection characterized by a rapid spreading infection of the subcutaneous tissue and in particular the fascia. Various synonyms for this type of infection are used, often due to the difficult diagnosis. Necrotizing fasciits of the extremities is found after simple skin lacerations and often in rural, farming or garden setting environments. Many of the infections are found in immunologically healthy people, but persons revealing a compromised wound healing are endangered additionally, e.g., diabetes. In the majority of the mic

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a rapidly progressive soft tissue infection with high morbidity and mortality rates. Its occurrence in the head and neck region is uncommon, the majority of reported cases being limited to involvement of the neck, usually from infections of dental or pharyngeal origin. Involvement of the face from NF is rare; only 35 such cases have been reported in the literature since 1960. It is not only associated with a high mortality but can also result in severe disfigurement of the face, posing challenging reconstructive problems. Successful management of facial NF require

A case of necrotizing fasciitis in a healthy woman taking a nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug in the puerperium is presented. The role of increased virulence of group A streptococci and the association of necrotizing fasciitis with nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs is reviewed.

Necrotizing fasciitis is a destructive soft tissue infection that rarely involves the eyelids. Three cases of necrotizing fasciitis of the eyelids are described. Necrotizing fasciitis was preceded by minor forehead soft tissue trauma in two cases and occurred spontaneously in one. In two patients necrotizing fasciitis was bilateral and involved both the upper and lower eyelids. Review of these cases, in addition to 18 cases previously reported in the English literature, reveals a predominance in females, preceding minor local soft tissue trauma, frequent bilateral involvement, and an associati

OBJECTIVE: We attempted to characterize the natural history of necrotizing fasciitis of the vulva.
STUDY DESIGN: The records of 29 nonpregnant women with necrotizing fasciitis of the vulva were evaluated.
RESULTS: These women experienced a rapidly progressing polymicrobial infection. Initially, the infections in many women were thought to be labial cellulitis, appearing mild and innocuous. Delays in recognition and aggressive surgical management were associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Of 15 women with a delay greater than 48 hours between presentation and treatment, 11 died.

The authors present a review on deep soft tissue infections--necrotizing fasciitis and necrotizing myositis, incl. the classification of myositis into sub-groups according to the causal agent. The authors describe the incidence of these diseases, basic clinical symptoms and therapeutic principles. Therapy is based on surgical treatment, antimicrobial treatment and in indicated cases on hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO).

Necrotizing fasciitis is a severe polybacteria infection characterised by necrosis of the fascial and adjacent soft tissues with rapid expansion of the infection along fascial planes. It may originate potentially fatal complications and often is accompanied by systemic toxicity. It is not a frequent entity in the head and neck, but early diagnosis is very important because early treatment based on intravenous antibiotherapy and aggressive surgical debridement can prevent complications that often cause the death of the patient. Pour reports of necrotizing fasciitis are presented, one of them wi

We report a case of potentially fatal cervical necrotizing fasciitis and descending necrotizing mediastinitis due to deep neck infection in a 66-year-old male patient with no history or evidence of immunocompromising disorders. On admission, he had painful neck movements and the skin over his neck was red, hot and tender. A computerized tomography (CT) scan of his neck and chest showed evidence of air collection in soft tissues. He was treated with broad-spectrum intravenous antibiotics and early massive cervical drainage. Prompt diagnosis by CT of the neck and chest enabled an early surgical

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a rapidly progressive, life-threatening soft-tissue infection that is traditionally caused by group A Streptococcus (GAS) or mixed aerobic/anaerobic bacteria. Monomicrobial Klebsiella pneumoniae NF (KP-NF) has been reported since 1996 but has not yet been systematically studied.
METHODS: We retrospectively studied consecutive NF cases treated at a university hospital in Taiwan during 1997-2010 and investigated the clinical characteristics and outcomes associated with monomicrobial KP-NF, using monomicrobial GAS-NF as a reference. We also analyzed the

PURPOSE: To report a case of a patient with periorbital necrotizing fasciitis caused by community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
METHODS: Case report. A previously healthy 33-year-old man was presented with pain and rapidly progressive swelling of the right upper eyelid following a minor trauma. Computed tomography scanning revealed soft tissue swelling and fracture of the anterior wall of the right frontal sinus. Oral amoxicillin + klavulanat 1 g, twice daily was started. Over the next 24 hours periorbital necrotizing fasciitis was developed. A wound swab was

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a rapidly progressive inflammatory infection of the fascia. Early diagnosis of NF is essential, as delayed diagnosis leads to higher rates of amputation and mortality. The laboratory risk indicator for necrotizing fasciitis (LRINEC) score is used to obtain early diagnosis in order to reduce morbidity and mortality rates.
OBJECTIVE: The laboratory risk indicator for necrotizing fasciitis (LRINEC) score was introduced in 2004 and is useful in achieving early recognition of necrotizing fasciitis. The authors investigated the efficacy of the LRINEC score

INTRODUCTION: Necrotizing fasciitis is a rapidly progressive and potentially fatal soft tissue infection. A wide spectrum of aerobic and nonaerobic organisms has been implicated as the causative pathogen. Necrotizing Fasciitis due to Salmonella serovars have previously been implicated both with and without a prodromal diarrheal illness, but mono-microbial Salmonella NF is very rare.
CASE PRESENTATION: We have discussed the case of a 67-year-old man who presented with necrotizing fasciitis of the perianal region in the emergency department of our hospital. He underwent serial debridement and a
