Professional competencies in geriatric nursing for geriatric nurses: a latent profile analysis.

BACKGROUND: As the global population continues to age, social realities such as advanced age, disability and living alone are coming to the fore, and the demand for medical care and health services for the elderly is increasing dramatically, especially in geriatrics. Given the important role geriatric nurses play in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and rehabilitation of elderly patients, and due to the uniqueness and complexity of geriatric work, this requires geriatric nurses not only to have the competencies that are available in general nursing, but also to ensure that they have suff…

Phenotype and prognostic factors in geriatric and non-geriatric patients with transthyretin cardiomyopathy.

AIMS: Transthyretin cardiac amyloidosis (ATTR-CM) may be an underestimated cause of heart failure among geriatric patients and represent a unique phenotype and prognostic profile. METHODS AND RESULTS: This retrospective, observational, cohort study characterizes cardiac and extracardiac disorders at diagnosis and assesses prognosis among ATTR-CM patients based on age (geriatric vs. non-geriatric) and amyloidosis subtype (wild type, ATTRwt and hereditary, ATTRv). In total, 943 patients with ATTR-CM were included, of which 306 had ATTRv and 637 had ATTRwt. Among these, 331 (35.1%) were non-geri

Some demographic and diagnostic characteristics of a geriatric population in a state geriatric facility.

Data are presented on some of the chief characteristics of a sample of 276 patients (152 women and 124 men) in a long-term state psychiatry facility, who had previously undergone intensive psychiatric treatment. For the women the average age ws 81.6 years, and for the men 75.8 years. The women had slightly more schizophrenia, manic depressive illnesses and cerebrovascular syndromes. The men had distinctly more CNS syphilis and alcoholic dementia. Initially, patients with schizophrenia had been admitted at ages ranging from 15 to 99 years, and those with manic depressive illness at ages ranging

Artificial intelligence-driven assessment of sarcopenia in orthopedic geriatrics: technical progress and clinical implications.

Sarcopenia, a progressive skeletal muscle disorder characterized by the loss of muscle mass and function, represents a significant challenge in geriatric orthopedics, with prevalence reaching as high as 48.7% in surgical populations. It is strongly associated with increased risks of falls, secondary fractures, postoperative complications, and mortality. Despite its clinical importance, traditional diagnostic methods like Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) and Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) are often impractical in acute orthopedic settings due to patient immobilization, positioning

The Detection of Porphyromonas Gingivalis in Geriatrics and Its Associated Periodontal and Clinical Factors.

BACKGROUND: Porphyromonas gingivalis is one of the important pathogens in the initiation and progression of periodontitis. The findings regarding the bacterium and periodontal status in geriatric subjects are not widely reported. Bacterial analysis is needed to provide more insight regarding the severity of the disease. This study evaluated the presence of P. gingivalis in the oral cavity of geriatric patients and found a significant association between P. gingivalis infection and medical illness. METHODS: Periodontal pocket samples were obtained from 32 geriatrics who were chosen randomly fr…

Pediatric and Geriatric Considerations.

Pediatric and geriatric traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients require age-specific considerations. This must occur at every juncture: preoperatively assessing frailty, intraoperatively with specific surgical considerations, post-operatively, during family discussions, and throughout the rehabilitation process. Both pediatric patients and patients over the age of 65 have an increased risk of infection as well as an increased risk of syndrome of the trephined. Long-term outcomes after pediatric and geriatric TBI (particularly in repetitive injury), the use of biomarkers for prognosis, optimal re

[Multimorbidity in Geriatric Oncology].

The incidence of many cancers increases with age. Because of the frequent presence of comorbidity, the prognosis is usually significantly worse in these cases. Furthermore, there is little evidence on how cancer treatments can be adapted in the presence of comorbidity. This article discusses key aspects of comorbidity in older cancer patients and provides practical management recommendations.

Hyponatremia in geriatric patients.

Hyponatremia is the most frequent electrolyte imbalance in geriatric medicine. Causes of hyponatremia were retrospectively analyzed in all in-patients treated in 2016 (N = 2267, 1564 women, 703 men, mean age ± standard deviation 81.9 ± 7.6 years). Any form of hyponatremia on admission, during the stay or on discharge was noted in 308 patients (13.6%, 231 women, 77 men; mean age ± standard deviation 83.1 ± 7.3 years, p = 0.009 vs. age of all patients). Women had a higher probability of developing hyponatremia compared to men (p = 0.019), 131 patients were hypovolemic, and dyspnea as an indicato

Anemia of geriatric patients.

Anemia is a common finding in the elderly. Approximately 10 percent of the elderly suffers from anemia. Anemia per se is an independent factor of mortality in older patients regardless its cause. Frailty is also frequent in geriatric patients. That means that there is a decreased reserve capacity to react to different stress factors including anemia. The frequent presence of heart failure and also impaired cerebrovascular circulation makes more difficult to tolerate anemia in older age. Anemia is a symptom, finding and treating the underlying cause is also important. Treatment always depends o

Geriatric Palliative Care.

In the geriatric age group, few studies demonstrate the efficacy of aggressive treatment. Often, a more palliative approach is wanted; such an approach can lead to better quality of life and even a longer life. The author discusses the limits of medical interventions in the elderly, the paucity of data, and the benefits of palliation in certain medical conditions, including dementia, Parkinson, depression, arthritis, congestive heart failure, and pneumonia. The role of frailty is addressed; specific goals of palliative care are delineated, such as reduction of polypharmacy, fall prevention, pa

Lithopedion in a Geriatric Patient.

Lithopedion (lithos = rock and paidion = child) is a rare condition that only occurs in 1.5 to 1.8% of extrauterine pregnancies and in 0.00045% of all pregnancies. It consists of an ectopic pregnancy in which the fetus dies but cannot be reabsorbed by the mother's body, which then coats it in a calcium-rich substance. We present the case of a 77-year-old woman with an incidental diagnosis of a lithopedion, which had been retained in her left pelvis for presumably 40 years.

[Urosepsis in Geriatric Patients].

Due to the demographic shift, increasing numbers of geriatric patients are admitted to acute care hospitals of all levels of care. This means that special challenges must be met in the medical care and management of these patients.Immunosenescence and multimorbidity make elderly patients vulnerable to infectious diseases. Urinary tract infections range from "simple" cystitis to pyelonephritis and urosepsis and, at 25%, are the second most common form of infection in geriatric patients. It is often difficult to make a diagnosis because typical symptoms do not always occur. Urosepsis, a hyperact
