Heart Failure Associated With Ventricular Septal Defect, Mitral Valve Prolapse, Non-stenotic Bicuspid Aortic Valve, and Patent Foramen Ovale.

Ventricular septal defect (VSD) and bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) are the two most common congenital heart defects. BAV may occur sporadically or in association with other cardiac malformations. VSDs have decreased incidence in the adult population due to spontaneous closure. Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) and patent foramen ovale (PFO) can be associated with these conditions but the simultaneous association of these defects has never been reported in the literature. We report the case of a 35-year-old male patient with persistent VSD, BAV, and PFO associated with new-onset heart failure and MVP. Transcatheter closure of tubular patent ductus arteriosus using muscular ventricular septal defect devices in infants and small children with congestive heart failure.

BACKGROUND: Transcatheter closure of a patent ductus arteriosus in children is widely performed to reduce symptoms and decrease the risk of endocarditis. Most arterial ducts are closed successfully with dedicated devices. However, in a tubular or "type C" patent ductus arteriosus with congestive heart failure, the occlusion is more challenging with these devices, with a higher risk of complications, such as aortic or left pulmonary stenosis and device embolization. AIM: To report our experience with muscular ventricular septal defect devices for patent ductus arteriosus occlusion in small chi

Efficacy and safety of propranolol in infants with heart failure due to moderate-to-large ventricular septal defect (VSD-PHF study) - A prospective randomized trial.

AIMS: The utility of beta-blocker therapy in infants with heart failure (HF) due to significant left-to-right shunt lesions is not known. The study aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of propranolol in infants with HF due to moderate-to-large ventricular septal defect (VSD). METHODS: The prospective randomized trial included 80 infants with HF and moderate-to-large VSD, randomly allocated to receive either conventional therapy alone (n = 40) or propranolol plus conventional therapy (n = 40). The primary endpoint was a composite of all-cause mortality, hospitalization for HF and/or chest i

[Comparison of the late hemodynamics following corrective surgery of congenital heart diseases: ventricular septal defect, tetralogy of Fallot, Mustard operation and Fontan operation].

Late hemodynamics following corrective surgery for congenital heart diseases were evaluated in 65 patients. The patients were divided into 4 groups due to the operative procedures including closure of ventricular septal defect (VSD group = 15 patients), repair of tetralogy of Fallot (TOF group = 20), Mustard operation (Mustard group = 19) and Fontan operation (Fontan group = 11). The postoperative period was 3.8 +/- 3.8, 1.0 +/- 0.1, 5.7 +/- 4.3 and 3.2 +/- 4.9 years in VSD, TOF, Mustard and Fontan groups, respectively. Postoperative pulmonary to systemic arterial pressure ratio in VSD group s

Heart rate variability is impaired in adults after closure of ventricular septal defect in childhood: A novel finding associated with right bundle branch block.

BACKGROUND: Ventricular septal defects (VSDs) generally have benign long-term prognoses, but recent studies have indicated increased pulmonary vascular resistance. A potential tool for monitoring pulmonary artery pressure is heart rate variability, and therefore, the aim of this study was to assess heart rate variability in adults with a surgically repaired or unrepaired VSD. METHODS: In a long-term, follow-up study, three groups were included; VSD-patients operated in early childhood, patients with an open VSD, and controls. For each patient, 24-hour Holter monitoring was performed and heart

Whether heart blocks post perimembranous ventricular septal defect device closure remain threatening: how could Chinese experiences impact the world?

Transcatheter closure has become one of the alternations of surgical treatment since 1988. However, cAVB occurred as a threatening incidence of 6.8% after Amplatzer VSD Occluder closure, which was quite higher than the incidence of 1% to 2% post-surgical closure, which leaded this kind of technique, was not approved by FDA. In this commentary, we reviewed the publications of cAVB following the device closure, and summarized current data of Modified Amplatzer-type Occluder during long-term follow-up, especially introduced the experiences from China, where this kind of treatment became a routine

Transcatheter closure, mini-invasive closure and open-heart surgical repair for treatment of perimembranous ventricular septal defects in children: a protocol for a network meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Both transcatheter device closure and surgical repair are effective treatments with excellent midterm outcomes for perimembranous ventricular septal defects (pmVSDs) in children. The mini-invasive periventricular device occlusion technique has become prevalent in research and application, but evidence is limited for the assessment of transcatheter closure, mini-invasive closure and open-heart surgical repair. This study comprehensively compares the efficacy, safety and costs of transcatheter closure, mini-invasive closure and open-heart surgical repair for treatment of pmVSDs in

Catheter-based closure of a perimembranous ventricular septal defect using the Amplatzer occluder in a patient with right-sided heart and mirror-imaged arrangements of all organs.

We describe a 6-year-old boy with a right-sided heart part of the Kartagener syndrome, complicated by presence of a perimembranous ventricular septal defect. The defect was closed interventionally using the Amplatzer asymmetrical occluder for ventricular septal defects. The procedure was event-free. Non-operative closure of a ventricular septal defect in this patient demonstrated no other difficulty than mirror-imaged thinking, thus giving evidence that such treatment also can be offered to patients with positional anomalies.

Giant Dilatation of the Right Coronary Aortic Bulb with Compression of the Right Ventricular Outflow Tract Mimicking a Ventricular Septal Defect: Diagnostic workup Using Echocardiography, Heart Catheterization, and Cardiac Computed Tomography.

Annuloaortic ectasia is a relatively rare diagnosis. Herein, we report an unusual case of an annuloaortic ectasia with asymmetric dilatation of the right coronary bulb mimicking a membranous ventricular septal defect (VSD) with Eisenmenger reaction by transthoracic echocardiography. Aortic angiography showed a dilated aortic root and moderate aortic regurgitation. Right cardiac catheterization, on the other hand, exhibited normal pulmonary artery blood pressure and normal pulmonary resistance, whereas normal venous gas values were measured throughout the caval vein and the right atrium, exclud

Systematic review and meta-analysis of the mechanical complications of ischemic heart disease: papillary muscle rupture, left ventricle rupture and post-infarct ventricular septal defect.

BACKGROUND: Improvements in revascularisation, including pharmacological, catheter-based and surgical, have resulted in improved outcomes for patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI), leading to decreased frequency of mechanical complications. Improvements in both techniques and technology have permitted select patients to be managed with a purely percutaneous, transcatheter strategy. Through systematic review, this study aims to synthesise the collective experience of percutaneous treatment of the mechanical complications of ischaemic heart disease. METHODS: The search strategy querie

Classification of Ventricular Septal Defects for the Eleventh Iteration of the International Classification of Diseases-Striving for Consensus: A Report From the International Society for Nomenclature of Paediatric and Congenital Heart Disease.

The definition and classification of ventricular septal defects have been fraught with controversy. The International Society for Nomenclature of Paediatric and Congenital Heart Disease is a group of international specialists in pediatric cardiology, cardiac surgery, cardiac morphology, and cardiac pathology that has met annually for the past 9 years in an effort to unify by consensus the divergent approaches to describe ventricular septal defects. These efforts have culminated in acceptance of the classification system by the World Health Organization into the 11th Iteration of the Internatio
