Two new and three previously known CIS-clerodane diterpenoids were isolated from the wild liverwort Gottschelia schizopleura (Jungermanniales, Jungermanniaceae). Their structures were established on the basis of spectroscopic analysis, especially 1D and 2D NMR data. The cytotoxic activities of compounds 1- 5 were evaluated against liver hepatoblastoma (HEP-G2), lung carcinoma (A549), breast ductal carcinoma (MDA-MB-435), and colon adenocarcinoma (LOVO) cell lines. The crude dichloromethane extract from the stem bark of Cupania glabra (Sapindaceae), showed in vitro cytotoxic activity against Hep G2, MDA-MB-231, Hs 578T, MCF-7, and PC-3 cells, and antibacterial activity against Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli. In this study, we report the synthesis of 14 Biginelli adducts and the evaluation of their anticancer activity against three human cancer cell lines: MCF-7 (breast), SW480 (colon), and Hep-G2 (liver), as well as the noncancerous Hek-293 cell line.
