Reduction in water permeability of the rabbit conjunctival epithelium by hypotonicity.

The effects of unilateral exposure to hypotonic media on the diffusional water permeability of the isolated rabbit conjunctiva were determined. For these experiments, a segment of the bulbar-palpebral conjunctiva was mounted between Ussing-type hemichambers under short-circuited conditions. Unidirectional diffusional water fluxes (Jdw) were measured in either direction by adding 3H2O to one hemichamber and sampling from the other. Electrical parameters were measured simultaneously. Jdw were determined in control isosmotic conditions and after dilution of one of the bathing solutions from 290 t

Biomechanically Tunable Nano-Silica/P-HEMA Structural Hydrogels for Bone Scaffolding.

Innovative tissue engineering biomimetic hydrogels based on hydrophilic polymers have been investigated for their physical and mechanical properties. 5% to 25% by volume loading PHEMA-nanosilica glassy hybrid samples were equilibrated at 37 °C in aqueous physiological isotonic and hypotonic saline solutions (0.15 and 0.05 M NaCl) simulating two limiting possible compositions of physiological extracellular fluids. The glassy and hydrated hybrid materials were characterized by both dynamo-mechanical properties and equilibrium absorptions in the two physiological-like aqueous solutions. The mecha

Schedule-induced oral narcotic self-administration: acute and chronic effects.

A pattern of lever pressing was maintained in rats by presenting a food pellet following the first lever press to occur after at least 90-seconds had elapsed (fixed-interval 90-second schedule of food presentation, FI 90-second). With a drinking solution available, a pattern of excessive postpellet drinking (schedule-induced polydipsia) developed and was used to induce rats to drink solutions containing varying concentrations of narcotics. During acute exposure to morphine HCl, morphine SO4 or methadone HCl in the drinking solution, drinking decreased as a function of increasing drug concentra

Oral hypertonic electrolyte-glucose/mosapride complex solution for resuscitation of burn shock in dogs.

The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of oral feeding of an electrolyte glucose mosapride solution for resuscitation in dogs with shock after a 35% TBSA full-thickness burn and the effect of mosapride on gastric emptying time. Eighteen male Beagle dogs were randomly divided into intravenous isotonic solution group, intragastric hypertonic solution group, and mosapride group after they were subjected to a 35% TBSA full-thickness flame injury. In intravenous isotonic solution group (I group), isotonic electrolyte glucose solution was given through vein with adoption of the Par

Fluid resuscitation in critical care.

Fluid deficits can arise as a result of a range of conditions, including haemorrhage, dehydration, vomiting and diarrhoea. Excessive fluid loss can have serious consequences for the patient and, if untreated, can lead to irreversible shock. The most common fluids used in fluid resuscitation are colloids and crystalloids, with research suggesting greater overall benefits for the use of the latter. Although it is vital to initiate fluid resuscitation early on after the patient has suffered trauma, there is some controversy as to the timing of this procedure--that is, whether it should be instiga

Effects of local anaesthetics on the relationship between charge movements and contractile thresholds in frog skeletal muscle.

1. Charge movements to 10 mV steps at different potentials were studied in voltage-clamped frog skeletal muscle fibres in isotonic solutions that minimized ionic currents, under different pharmacological conditions. The earliest onset of detectable mechanical movement ('threshold') was assessed visually under magnification. 2. Charge movements in isotonic solutions were similar to those reported in hypertonic solutions, under identical pulse procedures. 3. In the absence of local anaesthetics, threshold occurred at a mean membrane potential of -55 mV, after the movement of 4.0 nC/muF of non-li…

The movement of water in tumor tissue removed from the body.

When immersed in water cells of hepatomas produced by p-dimethyl-aminoazobenzene (butter yellow) take in less water than liver cells from which they are derived and more rapidly undergo disintegration; cholangiomas produced by butter yellow undergo similar changes. As a result of the injury of the tumor cells by water the osmotic exchange, characteristic of the normal liver cells under the same conditions, is impaired within the initial half hour of immersion. Solutions of sodium chloride isotonic for hepatoma tissue have a concentration approximating 0.16 molar and for cholangioma, 0.2 molar,

Balanced Crystalloid versus Saline in Adults with Traumatic Brain Injury: Secondary Analysis of a Clinical Trial.

Balanced crystalloids may improve outcomes compared with saline for some critically ill adults. Lower tonicity of balanced crystalloids could worsen cerebral edema in patients with intracranial pathology. The effect of balanced crystalloids versus saline on clinical outcomes in patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) requires further study. We planned an a priori subgroup analysis of TBI patients enrolled in the pragmatic, cluster-randomized, multiple-crossover Isotonic Solutions and Major Adverse Renal Events Trial (SMART) (ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT02444988, NCT02547779). Primary outcome was…

[Is physiological saline really physiological? Hyponatreamia treatment--small deviations from the rules of appropriate therapy create serious complications and side effects].

Physiological saline can hardly be treated as physiological as it contains qualitatively and quantitatively different amounts of electrolytes. In particular, it contains 50% more chlorine ions than serum. Physiological saline can cause metabolic acidosis and in diabetic patients hyperchloremic acidosis. In comparison with Ringer solution and plasma-lyte, physiological saline is causing higher number of untoward effects and mortality associated with surgery. Ringer solution should be used in the situations requiring expansion of extracellular fluid. Physiological saline is a solution of choice

Role of permissive hypotension, hypertonic resuscitation and the global increased permeability syndrome in patients with severe hemorrhage: adjuncts to damage control resuscitation to prevent intra-abdominal hypertension.

Secondary intra-abdominal hypertension (IAH) and abdominal compartment syndrome (ACS) are closely related to fluid resuscitation. IAH causes major deterioration of the cardiac function by affecting preload, contractility and afterload. The aim of this review is to discuss the different interactions between IAH, ACS and resuscitation, and to explore a new hypothesis with regard to damage control resuscitation, permissive hypotension and global increased permeability syndrome. Review of the relevant literature via PubMed search. The recognition of the association between the development of ACS a

Hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis during bipolar transurethral resection of the prostate: a report of two cases.

Compared with monopolar transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), which requires electrolyte-free irrigation fluid, normal saline can be used as the irrigation solution in bipolar and laser TURP. The risk of TURP syndrome and severe electrolyte disturbance is minimized when normal saline is used as the irrigation fluid. However, the use of isotonic saline also causes acid-base imbalance and electrolyte disturbance. We experienced two patients who developed hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis during bipolar TURP. After proper intervention, hemodynamic instability resolved, and laboratory te

Efficacy and safety of hypertonic saline solutions fluid resuscitation on hypovolemic shock: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: Fluid resuscitation is a fundamental intervention in patients with hypovolemic shock resulting from trauma. Appropriate fluid resuscitation in trauma patients could reduce organ failure, until blood components are available, and hemorrhage is controlled. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis assessing the effect of hypertonic saline/dextran or hypertonic saline for fluid resuscitation on patient outcomes restricted to adults with hypovolemic shock. METHODS: We conducted a search of electronic information sources, including PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane libr

[Characteristics of Hospitalized Adults with Severe Hyponatremia: A Comparison of Patients with Severe and Very Severe Hyponatremia in Terms of Etiology, Symptoms, Treatment Response, and Mortality].

UNLABELLED: Hyponatremia is the most common hydroelectrolyte disorder in hospitalized patients. It is unclear whether there are differences between severe hyponatremia (<125 mEq/L) and very severe hyponatremia (<115 mEq/L) in terms of etiology, response to therapy, and mortality. AIM: Describe the etiology, symptoms, response to treatment and mortality of hospitalized adults with severe and very severe hyponatremia. METHODS: Retrospective study reviewing clinical and laboratory records of hospitalized patients between 2010 and 2020. RESULTS: records from 398 patients were obtained. The aver

Cardiovascular effects of epidurally administered morphine and a xylazine-morphine combination in isoflurane-anesthetized dogs.

Cardiovascular effects of epidurally administered morphine, a morphine-xylazine combination, and saline solution (control) during isoflurane-maintained anesthesia were assessed in 6 healthy dogs. Anesthesia was induced with isoflurane in O2 and was maintained at 2.0% end-tidal isoflurane concentration. Ventilation was controlled to maintain PaCO2 at 35 to 45 mm of Hg. The dorsal pedal artery was cannulated for measurement of systolic, mean, and diastolic pressures, and for blood sample collection. Arterial blood pH and gas tensions were determined every 30 minutes. Cardiac output was determine

Intraoperative fluid management.

The surgeon should be cognizant of both the intraoperative and postoperative consequences of intraoperative fluid administration. Optimal fluid management should take into consideration the patient's overall condition and should not be based solely on the cardiovascular response to volume loading. The selection of a particular fluid for resuscitation solution should be tailored to the patient's individual situation. No single fluid preparation will be appropriate for all clinical situations. Crystalloids, colloids, and hypertonic saline solutions have all been shown to be effective in restorin
