Giant mesenteric cyst of mesothelial origin as a rare late complication of previous peritoneal dialysis during hemodialysis.

Mesenteric cysts are uncommon benign abdominal lesions with no specific clinical features. Their occurrence during hemodialysis is exceptional. We report the case of a 22-year-old patient who had been treated with peritoneal dialysis for 2 years and was subsequently transferred to hemodialysis because of refractory peritonitis. Three years later, he presented with a progressive abdominal distension caused by a large mass extending from the epigastric to the pelvic region. Exploratory laparoscopy revealed a giant cystic lesion occupying the entire peritoneal cavity. Complete surgical excision w…

Benign hemorrhagic mesenteric cyst mimicking peritoneal dissemination in early-stage ovarian clear cell carcinoma: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Ovarian clear cell carcinoma (OCCC) is a distinct subtype of epithelial ovarian cancer with characteristic biological behavior and clinical features. Accurate preoperative staging is essential for guiding optimal management; however, imaging findings may occasionally be misleading. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 58-year-old postmenopausal woman with OCCC who was clinically suspected to have advanced disease because of a large abdominopelvic tumor, mesenteric abnormalities on contrast-enhanced CT, and an elevated serum CA125 level. These findings raised concern for peri

Perforated Rotated Mesenteric Cyst Presenting as Acute Abdominal Pain in a Female Pediatric Patient: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Although more than half of cases are asymptomatic or mild in symptoms, mesenteric cysts can present clinically and radiologically similar to gynecologic diseases. CASE: A female child presented with worsening episodes of abdominal pain 1 day before admission. Abdominal x-ray suggested mechanical obstruction of the small bowel, and CT scan suggested ileal abnormality. DISCUSSION: During open surgery, we found 2 rotated chylous mesenteric cysts, accompanied by adhesions and jejunal perforation 57 cm from the ligament of Treitz. Cyst excision, adhesiolysis, ileo-ileal resection, a…

Primary mesenteric hydatid cyst; a rare manifestation of hydatid disease through a case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Hydatidosis, a common zoonotic disease, especially in countries which are poorly developed, is not only capable of affecting a huge number of humans but also animals. CASE PRESENTATION: A 40-year-old female presented to our hospital complaining of the left flank and left upper quadrant pain increasing with exertion for three years. Physical findings revealed a firm lump in the left upper quadrant area extending to the left flank about (15cmx14.5 cm) in size. Abdominal CT scan reported a well defined low attenuating fluid density consistent with thick walled cystic

Giant Mesenteric Cyst With Gastric Perforation Masquerading As Obstructed Inguinal Hernia: A Rarest of the Rare Case.

Mesenteric cysts are extremely rare intra-abdominal tumors. They usually present with an array of symptoms, usually non-specific, which leads to difficulty in diagnosing them. Occasionally these can present in the emergency as an acute abdomen. We report a rare presentation of a huge mesenteric cyst with gastric perforation, misdiagnosed clinically as obstructed inguinal hernia. A 50-year male presented with complaints of sudden severe pain in the abdomen along with swelling and pain in the right groin region with absolute constipation for the last 4 days. A clinical diagnosis of obstructed in…

Laparoscopic excision of mesenteric duplication enteric cyst embedded in sigmoid mesocolon mimicking retroperitoneal neurogenic tumor in adults.

Mesenteric cysts are rare abdominal tumors with an incidence of 1/105,000 to 250,000 hospitalized adult surgical patients. These cysts may occur in every part of the mesentery, from duodenum to rectum. Most frequently, cysts are localized in small bowel mesentery. They usually present during the first decade of life, mostly occurring in pediatric patients. These lesions characteristically arise from the mesenteric border of the bowel. The majority are asymptomatic and, if found, are discovered incidentally during abdominal exploration or radiologic examination. Traditionally, the treatment of …

Jejunal mesenteric cyst presenting as acute midgut volvulus in a child: a rare cause of surgical abdomen.

INTRODUCTION: Mesenteric cysts are defined as benign intra-abdominal tumors located in the mesentery. Mesenteric cysts are rare intra-abdominal lesions in children and are often asymptomatic. Acute midgut volvulus secondary to a mesenteric cyst is an exceptionally uncommon presentation that requires prompt surgical intervention to prevent bowel ischemia. CASE PRESENTATION: An 8-year-old boy was referred from the pediatric department with acute abdominal pain and recurrent bilious vomiting. Clinical examination revealed around 20 × 20 cm size cystic lump involving whole abdomen. Contrast-enhan…

Lymphatic Mesenteric Cyst, a Rare Cause of Surgical Abdominal Pain: Case Report and Review of the Literature.

A lymphatic mesenteric cyst (LMC) is a rare clinical entity, of unclear etiopathogenesis, which can arise in the abdominal cavity or retroperitoneum without a clear origin. We describe a case of a 74-year-old male presenting with abdominal pain that was non-specific and non-responsive to medical therapy. Laboratory tests clinical examination were inconclusive while the abdominal computed tomography (CT) scan showed a cystic lesion of the ileal mesentery. We performed an open surgical excision of the lesion with the resolution of clinical symptoms. The lesion resulted to be an LMC at the histol…

Comprehensive Analysis of Pediatric Mesenteric Cysts with Clinical Presentation, Diagnostic Challenges, Surgical Management, and Outcome.

BACKGROUND: Mesenteric cysts are rare, benign abdominal tumors that pose diagnostic challenges due to their nonspecific symptoms. Their etiology is diverse, with congenital, lymphatic, and inflammatory origins proposed. Clinical presentation often includes abdominal pain, mass, or incidental findings. Management primarily involves surgical resection, yet the optimal approach and long-term outcomes remain unclear. This study aims to comprehensively characterize the clinical spectrum, diagnostic accuracy, therapeutic strategies, and prognostic factors associated with mesenteric cysts. MATERIALS…

A case report: Acute abdominal pain caused by a mesenteric cyst in a 20 years old female patient.

Mesenteric cysts are documented as rare intra-abdominal benign tumors, whose etiology and classification controversy still exists. They are considered the rarest variety between the abdominal cysts and both its low incidence and the mistaken belief that was a trivial process without apparent symptoms, had contributed to their scarce knowledge. This study aimed to present a mesenteric cyst case with focal acute inflammation and four lymph nodes with follicular lymphoid hyperplasia. The study was performed 20-year-old female patient, examined in emergency department for abdominal pain 12 hours o…

Giant Mesenteric Cyst in a Young Adult Mimicking Refractory Ascites: A Diagnostic and Surgical Challenge-A Case Report.

Mesenteric cysts are rare benign intra-abdominal tumors that are usually asymptomatic and diagnosed incidentally while being investigated for other conditions or their complications. Surgical excision remains the primary treatment option. Here we present the case of a 30-year-old male with progressive abdominal distension, initially misdiagnosed with liver disease and refractory ascites, leading to inappropriate diuretic therapy. Subsequent imaging revealed a giant mesenteric cyst, which was successfully managed with complete surgical excision.

Mesenteric cyst manifested as obesity, gastroesophageal reflux, urinary incontinence, and abdominal mass during pregnancy-Case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: The mesenteric cyst (MC) is a rare entity, a benign lesion that causes the growth of an abdominal mass and other clinical presentations. The presentation of MC during pregnancy is even less frequent. CASE PRESENTATION: A 34-year-old Mexican woman presented with a mesenteric cyst treated with laparotomy aspiration during the 16th week of pregnancy; the pregnancy was resolved by cesarean section without problems. Nevertheless, 17 months later, the lesion recurred. New assessment and surgical treatment with complete excision are performed without evidence of further …

Unique coexistence of chronic midgut malrotation, mesenteric cyst, and pancreas divisum in a Crohn's disease patient: MR-enterography assessment.

Chronic midgut malrotation is a rare condition found in the adult age that predisposes to severe complications. It derives from an incomplete rotation of the mesentery around the superior mesenteric artery during embryogenic development. This results in intestinal loops displacement and mesenteric malfixation. Nevertheless, other congenital abnormalities can be also associated, such as mesenteric cysts and biliopancreatic malformations. Imaging modalities employed in the evaluation of chronic midgut malrotation include contrast radiography, which permits to visualize the localization of the in…

Mesenteric Cysts as Rare Causes of Acute Abdominal Masses: Diagnostic Challenges and Surgical Insights from a Literature Review.

Background/Objectives: Abdominal tumors can trigger acute, life-threatening complications, needing urgent care. Though often slow-growing, they may present suddenly with obstruction, bleeding, or organ compression. This article explores diagnostic challenges in such emergencies and presents a rare case of a giant mesenteric cyst. Methods: A PubMed search was conducted to review abdominal tumors in emergencies, focusing on mesenteric cysts. Results: A 37-year-old woman with no significant history presented with two weeks of diffuse abdominal pain and distension. Labs showed mild inflammation an…
