History and future perspectives of male aesthetic genital surgery.

Since ancient times, men have tried to change the size and shape of their genitals. Bites from insects or poisonous snakes and weights were among the first methods used for this purpose. In the first half of the 1900s, the scientific push regarding male genital aesthetic surgery began. Scrotoplasty, penile suspensory ligament release, injection of hyaluronic acid as filler, use of several types of grafts, lipofilling, and liposuction are techniques currently used. The Penuma® implant has recently been described with promising results. We are living in the era of tailored surgery and regenerati

Can medicine be aesthetic? Disentangling beauty and health in elective surgeries.

This article analyzes tensions between aesthetics and health in medicine. The blurring of distinctions between reconstructive and cosmetic procedures, and the linking of plastic surgery with other medical treatments, have added to the legitimacy of an emerging "aesthetic medicine." As cosmetic surgeries become linked to other medical procedures with perceived greater medical necessity, health and aesthetics become entangled. One consequence is that medical needs are magnified while perceptions of the risks of surgery are minimized. Drawing on ethnographic work on plastic surgery, as well as ot

Current prescription trends in antibiotic prophylaxis: a multinational survey in esthetic plastic surgery.

BACKGROUND: Surgical site infections pose a significant challenge in esthetic surgery, representing one of the most prevalent complications. While research in plastic surgery remains limited, reported rates of SSI range from 0.5% to 32.6%. Although the overall incidence of infections in most esthetic surgeries is low, it carries a significant burden of morbidity, hospital readmissions, and prolonged hospital stays. PURPOSE: Our study aims to provide evidence-based recommendations regarding the prescription of prophylactic antibiotics for the most common esthetic plastic surgery procedures, ba…

The Potential for Telemedicine to Reduce Bias in Patients Seeking Facial Plastic Surgery.

Telemedicine use among otolaryngologists-head and neck surgeons and facial plastic and reconstructive surgeons has accelerated as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet, it is unclear what impact the increased adoption of telehealth will have on the doctor-patient relationship, patients' perceptions of individual practices, and the likelihood of patients proceeding with the next steps toward surgery. While an understanding of these complex questions is imperative for all otolaryngologists, it is extremely important for facial plastic surgeons who focus on elective procedures, particularly cosm

Are Burnt-out Doctors Prone to Seek Cosmetic Surgery? A Cross-Sectional Study.

INTRODUCTION: Studies have so far examined several psychosocial factors associated with an interest in aesthetic plastic surgery. Among them, gender, teasing history, marital status, education, social networks and body dysmorphic disorders are all predictors of interest in cosmetic surgery. Given the fact that professional status can influence health-related attitudes, our objective was firstly to identify if medical professionals are more likely to express interest in plastic surgery compared to non-medical professionals. Secondary, given the high rate of burn-out among physicians, the study

Effects of prior augmentation and reduction mammoplasty to sentinel node lymphatic mapping in breast cancer.

Previous plastic surgery procedures such as breast augmentation or reduction mammoplasty can potentially alter the lymphatic drainage of the breast. The purpose of this study is to determine the success rates of sentinel node lymphatic mapping in patients with previous plastic surgical procedures of the breast. A total of 83 patients with a history of plastic surgery of the breast that underwent subsequent sentinel node mapping between 1996 and 2008 were retrospectively analyzed. Eight-three patients that underwent a total of 108 sentinel node biopsies. Hundred cases (93%) previously underwent…

Surgical Considerations in the Management of Constriction Ring Syndrome.

Surgical management of constriction ring syndrome (CRS) is individualised due to the heterogenic presentation of the condition. CRS includes constriction rings, acrosyndactyly, nubbins and short digits. Involvement of more than one limb is common and children often need multiple surgeries. Each limb may need staged surgeries. If the child has vascular or lymphatic compromise secondary to a constriction ring, the ring needs to be excised and released in the first few days of life. The rings are released using multiple big Z-plasties in one or two stages. Nerve palsy associated with the rings ne

Revisiting guidelines for global plastic and reconstructive surgical initiatives: Recommendations from a scoping review of two decades of published evidence.

BACKGROUND: We have an opportunity to strengthen guidelines for global surgical initiatives, such as those established by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and Lancet Commission on Global Surgery (LCOGS). To recommend improvements supporting health system resilience, we conducted a qualitative scoping review and thematic analysis of the literature on global surgical initiatives in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (PRS) and similar surgical and perioperative specialties. METHODS: We queried four medical databases for publications from 2006 to 2023 pertaining to humanitarian sur

Open Otoplasty Through Ventral Skin Incision and Abrasion of the Antihelix Under Vision.

BACKGROUND: Common otoplasties through incisions behind the ear with blind scoring or scratching the anterior perichondrium often leave an irregular surface of the antihelix. METHOD: To avoid these tiny side effects, a skin incision along the ventral antihelical fold (scapha) is used to thin and fold the flat antihelix under vision. After local anesthesia of the ventral ear skin, an incision along the scapha allows its blunt lifting toward the concha and to expose the cartilaginous antihelix. Its future shape is marked and the thickness of the cartilage is thinned with a dermabrader by approx
