BACKGROUND: Pediatric recipients of hematopoietic stem cell and solid organ transplants are at increased risk of invasive pneumococcal infections (IPI). Data on IPI in this population are scarce. To our knowledge, this is the first study describing the epidemiology of IPI among pediatric transplant recipients in the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) era.
METHODS: We identified transplant recipients with IPI at 8 children's hospitals in the U.S. from our surveillance database (2000-2014). Pneumococcal isolates were collected prospectively. Serotyping and antibiotic susceptibility were perfo

In France, despite a high rate of pneumococcal conjugate vaccine coverage, the number of cases of pneumococcal meningitis in children did not decline significantly between 2001–2002 (n = 264) and 2007–2008 (n = 244). A decline was observed among children < 2 years old (185 [70.1%] to 134 [54.9%] cases; P = 0.0004), but was counterbalanced by an increase among children ≥ 2 years old (79 [29.9%] to 110 [45.1%] cases). Mean age increased significantly, from 2.3 (median 0.8) to 3.8 (median 1.5) years. After pneumococcal conjugate vaccine 7 implementation, a wide diversity of serotypes implicated in

OBJECTIVES: Antimicrobial resistance in Streptococcus pneumoniae has increased in recent decades. We linked two surveillance programs to evaluate trends in incidence, serotype distribution, and antimicrobial resistance in invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) since the heptavalent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV7) was introduced in BC in 2003.
METHODS: IPD case reports for BC from 2002-2005 from the BC Centre for Disease Control were linked to serotype and antimicrobial susceptibility results from the National Centre for Streptococcus (NCS).
RESULTS: There was a significant decrease in IPD

Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD) are frequently exposed to infectious agents including influenza virus and Streptococcus pneumoniae. These infectious agents cause pneumonia and exacerbation of COPD. Prevention as well as anti-microbial treatments is critical for COPD. International guideline recommends that all COPD patients should be vaccinated against influenza virus. While pneumococcal vaccine is recommended for older and severe cases at present. Recently additive effect of pneumococcal vaccine and influenza vaccine are shown.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the characteristics of pneumococcal meningitis in children ≤ 14 years old following the market introduction of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines in our community.
METHODS: Retrospective study of pneumococcal meningitis cases with a two-period analysis: pre-13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) (2001-2010) and post-PCV13 (2010-2015). Patient demographic and clinical data, and microbiological data were collected.
RESULTS: Eighteen cases were diagnosed. The mean incidence in the pre-PCV13 period was 2.3/100 000, which reduced to 0.5/100 000 after the PCV13 introdu

BACKGROUND: Invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) became a notifiable disease in New Zealand in 2008, and in the same year pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) was added to the childhood immunisation schedule.
DESIGN: This was a retrospective study of IPD in infants aged <90 days reported to the national notifiable disease database, EpiSurv, from 1 January 2009 to 31 December 2013. All cases had Streptococcus pneumoniae isolated from a normally sterile site.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: IPD incidence was calculated for babies aged <90 and <30 days using the number of national IPD cases with a denomi

BACKGROUND: The impact of 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) on pneumococcal meningitis (PM) in US children is unknown. We compared the serotype distribution, antibiotic susceptibility, hospital course, and outcomes of children with PM 3 years before and 3 years after the introduction of PCV13.
METHODS: We identified patients ≤ 18 years of age with PM at 8 children's hospitals in the United States. Pneumococcal isolates were collected prospectively. Serotyping and antibiotic susceptibility were performed in a central laboratory. Clinical data were abstracted from medical records

The impact of the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) on the incidence of pneumococcal meningitis (PM) in children is unknown. To determine this impact, a descriptive multicentre retrospective cohort study was conducted from 2008 to 2013 in northern France. All laboratory-confirmed PM in children aged <18 years in all hospitals of the area with paediatric units were included. Two independent databases were used for exhaustive identification of cases: medical plus laboratory records at each hospital and discharge codes. The corrected incidence of PM was determined by a capture-reca

INTRODUCTION: Streptococcus pneumoniae is the leading cause of bacterial meningitis. Young children, the elderly and those who are immunocompromised or who suffer from chronic diseases have the highest risk of developing pneumococcal meningitis. A 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV7) was licensed in 2000 in the US and in 2001 in Europe.
METHODS: A literature search was performed in PubMed to identify studies assessing the impact of routine childhood PCV7 vaccination on pneumococcal diseases. Here, we report the impact on pneumococcal meningitis.
RESULTS: A total of 17 articles repo

All patients < or =14 years old with a diagnosis of pneumococcal meningitis (n = 160) were included (2001, 2004-2006). Incidence per 100,000 child <5 years old varied from 6.14 in 2001 to 2.83 in 2006 (54% of reduction, P < 0.01). There was a significant correlation (R2 = 0.9506) with PCV7 distribution increase. No significant changes in the incidence by nonvaccine serotypes were found when comparing 2001 and 2006. The case fatality rate was 7.5%.

BACKGROUND: Pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) introduced in childhood national immunization programs lowered vaccine-type invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD), but replacement with non-vaccine-types persisted throughout the PCV10/13 follow-up period. We assessed PCV10/13 impact on pneumococcal meningitis incidence globally.
METHODS: The number of cases with serotyped pneumococci detected in cerebrospinal fluid and population denominators were obtained from surveillance sites globally. Site-specific meningitis incidence rate ratios (IRRs) comparing pre-PCV incidence to each year post-PCV10

BACKGROUND: Adults aged ≥65 years, adults with certain underlying medical conditions, and persons experiencing homelessness are at increased risk for invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD). Two new pneumococcal conjugate vaccines, 15-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV15) and 20-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV20), were recently approved for use in US adults. We describe the epidemiology of IPD among Alaska adults and estimate the proportion of IPD cases potentially preventable by new vaccines.
METHODS: We used statewide, laboratory-based surveillance data to calculate and compa

Streptococcus pneumoniae is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in children less than 5 years of age. Prevention of pneumococcal disease and death in children in the developing world through vaccination with recently developed, highly efficacious pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) is now possible. Schedules combining PCV with 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPV23) have been studied and proposed as a means to expand disease protection against serotypes not included in the PCVs. Studies of group A and C meningococcal polysaccharide vaccine and repeated doses of PPV23 in a

Streptococcus pneumoniae is a major cause of pneumonia, meningitis, and otitis media and is responsible for disease in young children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals. Emerging high-level resistance to penicillin, multiple antibiotics, and tolerance to vancomycin emphasizes the importance of preventing pneumococcal infection by alternative methods such as immunization. The development of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines using the same carrier proteins as those used in Hemophilus influenzae type b vaccines has enhanced the immune response in infants and children compared with poly

Secondary bacterial infections due to Streptococcus pneumoniae and Staphylococcus aureus, responsible for excess morbidity and mortality during influenza epidemics, are often preceded by excess bacterial density within the upper respiratory tract. Influenza and pneumococcal vaccines reduce secondary infections within the lungs; however, their effects on upper respiratory tract carriage remain unknown. We demonstrate that a live attenuated influenza vaccine significantly reduces pneumococcal growth and duration of carriage during subsequent influenza to levels seen in influenza-naive controls. …

In this dose-ranging study 220 seniors who had received the 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide (PnPS) vaccine at least 5 years prior to enrollment were assigned to receive one of four volumes (0.1, 0.5, 1 or 2 ml) of 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate (PnC) vaccine or a 0.5 ml dose of 23-valent PnPS vaccine. All participants received a reduced challenge dose of 0.1 ml of PnPS vaccine 1 year after enrollment. There was evidence of a dose response to PnC vaccine and antibody levels in the 1 ml PnC group tended to be significantly higher than in the PnPS group. A booster response to the challenge
