OBJECTIVE: Posture induced common peroneal nerve (CPN) palsy is usually produced during the prolonged squatting or habitual leg crossing while seated, especially in Asian culture and is manifested by the onset of foot drop. Because of its similarity to discogenic foot drop, patients may be diagnosed with a lumbar disc disorder, and in some patients, surgeons may perform unnecessary examinations and even spine surgery. The purpose of our study is to establish the clinical characteristics and diagnostic assessment of posture induced CPN palsy.
METHODS: From June 2008 to June 2012, a retrospecti

PURPOSE: The goal of this study was to compare the standing posture of stroke patients with standing posture of healthy subjects. We have used an analysis of the centres of pressure sways.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: The centres of pressure sways of the subjects were recorded on a force platform. Each subject have carried out 5 trials of 60 s while maintaining a static standing posture, with eyes opened and then closed. These sways were broken down into two spectral frequencies. The first ones being the sways of the vertical projection of the centre of gravity and the second ones being the differenc

Ideomotor apraxia (IM) is a disorder of skilled action characterized by spatiotemporal errors in pantomiming object use and in using objects. Recent evidence suggests that at least some patients with IM may exhibit particular deficits in forming hand configurations appropriate for object use. Sirigu et al. [Cortex 31 (1995) 41] reported an apraxic who positioned her hand inappropriately when attempting to use objects in accordance with stored knowledge of object-specific manipulation, but in reaching tasks could grasp the same objects appropriately in response to their structure. To this point

Quadriplegics are able to compensate for alterations of operational length of the diaphragm by reflexly increasing neural drive to the diaphragm. This increase in neural drive is adequate to maintain required tidal volume and minute ventilation during quiet breathing in these patients with limited inspiratory muscle function. It is not known, however, if this neural compensation is sufficient to preserve ventilation when the diaphragm is stressed by simultaneously changing its operational length and increasing ventilatory demands. This issue was explored in 7 quadriplegics whose vital capacity

In an assessment of cardiovascular performance in eighteen young healthy adults, ballistocardiograms were recorded in three mutually perpendicular directions in both the supine and the seated postures, and in the head-foot direction when standing. From these recordings three-dimensional vector ballistocardiograms were obtained which were found to be consistent over repeated measurements (r = 0.81 to 0.88 for the three components when supine) and sensitive to the functional changes imposed by changes of posture. It was observed that in the antero-posterior ballistocardiogram recorded in the sup

BACKGROUND: Balance impairments are common in people with Multiple Sclerosis (PwMS), yet brain activity during ecologically valid balance tasks is poorly understood.
OBJECTIVE: To compare hemodynamic responses and postural control between PwMS and healthy subjects(HS) during a task forcing a greater reliance on vestibular cues.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 18 PwMS (median[IQR] age: 44.0(17.5) years, EDSS: 2.0(1.0)) and 18 age-sex-matched HS underwent fNIRS recordings while standing on a foam with eyes closed. Oxy- and deoxyhemoglobin changes were recorded over frontal, occipital,

BACKGROUND: Similar impact on proprioception has been observed in participants with lumbar delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) and chronic low back pain (LBP), raising questions about the relevance of lumbar DOMS as a suitable pain model for LBP when assessing back pain-related postural stability changes.
RESEARCH QUESTION: Does lumbar DOMS impact postural stability?
METHODS: Twenty healthy adults participated in this experimental study and underwent a posturographic examination before and 24 to 36 h after a protocol designed to induce lumbar DOMS. Posturographic examination was assessed du

A flexed posture (FP) is characterized by protrusion of the head and an increased thoracic kyphosis (TK), which may be caused by osteoporotic vertebral fractures (VFs). These impairments may affect motor function, and consequently increase the risk of falling and fractures. The aim of the current study was therefore to examine postural control during walking in elderly patients with FP, and to investigate the relationship with geriatric phenomena that may cause FP, such as increased TK, VFs, frailty, polypharmacy and cognitive impairments. Fifty-six elderly patients (aged 80 ± 5.2 years; 70% f

There is a lack of quantitative evidence for spinal postures that are advocated as 'ideal' in clinical ergonomics for sitting. This study quantified surface spinal curves and examined whether subjects could imitate clinically 'ideal' directions of spinal curve at thoraco-lumbar and lumbar regions: (i) flat - at both regions (ii) long lordosis - lordotic at both regions (iii) short lordosis - thoracic kyphosis and lumbar lordosis. Ten healthy male subjects had 3-D motion sensors adhered to the skin so that sagittal spinal curves were represented by angles at thoracic (lines between T1-T5 and T5

Abnormal automatic postural responses are thought to contribute to balance impairment in Parkinson's disease. However, because postural responses are modifiable by stance, we have speculated that some postural abnormalities in patients with Parkinson's disease are secondary to their stooped stance. We have studied this assumption by assessing automatic postural responses in 30 healthy subjects who were instructed either to stand upright or to assume a typical parkinsonian posture. During both conditions, subjects received 20 serial 4 degrees 'toe-up' rotational perturbations from a supporting

The aim of this experiment was to measure the effect of immersion in a virtual environment (VE) on postural stability and examine the relationship between postural stability and self-reported simulator sickness. Forty healthy subjects were exposed to 20 min of immersion in an interactive VE with restricted user movement. The VE was viewed on a head mounted display (HMD) and the subject remained standing throughout the immersion period. Two static postures, normal stance and tandem romberg, were recorded before immersion, immediately after immersion and again at 10 min postimmersion. Performanc

OBJECTIVES: Functional asymmetry is a hallmark of aging-related motor decline, contributing to impaired gait, balance deficits, and increased fall risk. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a single session of Neuro Postural Optimization (NPO), a non-invasive neuromodulation protocol based on Radio Electric Asymmetric Conveyer (REAC) technology, on central neurophysiological balance and functional symmetry in older adults.
METHODS: Eighteen participants (mean age: 72.4 ± 6.1 years) underwent a standardized REAC-NPO session. Assessments were performed immediately before and after treatm

BACKGROUND: Loss of balance is a considerable risk factor for workers while using ladders, because they are required to maintain static postural balance on platforms of a restricted size. This study observed center of mass (CoM) and center of pressure (CoP) behaviors and evaluated the effects of the platform depth (anterior-posterior length) and working postures.
METHODS: Eleven male participants stood on four platforms with depths ranging from 6 to 15 cm and maintained their positions for 60 s while performing or not performing other tasks (object holding, upward viewing, or both simultaneou

Postural adjustments, which occur after the end of a voluntary movement (termed Consecutive Postural Adjustments: CPAs), were studied and compared to the corresponding Anticipatory Postural Adjustments (APAs). Seven right-handed male adults were asked to perform horizontal two-handed maximal ramp pushes as quickly as possible, while sitting. A dynamometric bar measured the reaction to push force (Fx) and a custom-designed device measured the resultant reaction forces along the antero-posterior axis (Rx). Two ischio-femoral contacts (100 BP: full ischio-femoral contact of the ischio-femoral len
