Recurrent colonization of successively implanted tracheoesophageal vocal prostheses by a member of the Fusarium solani species complex.

Tracheoesophageal vocal prostheses (TVP) in laryngectomized patients commonly deteriorate due to overgrowth by yeasts, particularly Candida species. We describe the first case of colonization of such devices by a member of the Fusarium solani species complex in a patient with a history of glottal carcinoma. Three isolates, from three prostheses, were found morphologically consistent with the traditional picture of F. solani. Ribosomal sequence analysis showed that the isolates belonged to a distinct, as yet apparently unnamed phylogenetic species within the F. solani species complex. This spec

[Is GSB knee prosthesis implantation for patellar problems still justifiable? Experiences and results based on 230 implanted GSB knee joint prostheses].

In our clinical the GSB-prosthesis has proved to be a good therapeutic concept. In 1988 we controlled 230 patients who had got GSB-prostheses in the years 1979-1987. The average age of our patients was 75 years. Most times surgery had been done because of idiopathic osteoarthrosis, rarely because of post-traumatic or rheumatoid arthritis. Indications for surgery were usually severe pain, limited range of movement and deformities of the knee joint. In the beginning of the studied period we had implanted GSB-type I-prostheses, later we had implanted GSB-type II-prostheses with or without femorop

Marginal Bone Level Changes in Implant-Supported Fixed Prostheses in a Retrospective Study: A Multifactorial Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To identify the site-related, implant characteristic-related, prosthetic, and patient-related factors associated with marginal bone level around dental implant-supported fixed prostheses. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study analyzed clinical and radiographic data obtained during maintenance visits. The interproximal radiographic bone levels were selected at the site showing the greatest bone loss. The implants were classified as having a bone level ≥ 2 mm (BL group) or < 2 mm (NBL group). Multivariate multilevel logistic regression was used to assess the association b

Dental Identification Utilizing Implant-Supported Fixed Prostheses in a Nearly Skeletonized Individual: A Case Report.

Forensic dental examination was performed on a nearly skeletonized decedent in whom both maxillary and mandibular complete dentures remained, an uncommon finding in deceased individuals. Careful manipulation of residual soft tissues permitted visualization of the underlying osseous and prosthetic components. Postmortem findings demonstrated extensive implant therapy in both arches, consisting of implant-supported fixed complete dentures retained by multiple endosseous implants. Antemortem dental records, including digital panoramic and periapical radiographs with treatment documentation, were

Accuracy evaluation of dual-function scan body for recording complete arch implant-supported prostheses.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Scan bodies that enable the reduction of prosthetic components while maintaining accuracy for digital framework planning are limited and require further investigation. PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the accuracy (precision and trueness) of a dual-function scan body in capturing the angulation and distances of multiple implants in completely edentulous arches. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Four implants (CM 4.3×10 mm) were placed in a 3-dimensionally (3D) printed mandibular model, from which a master gypsum cast was fabricated. This cast served as th

Feasibility of digitizing multiple tissue-level implants without scan bodies for fixed dental prostheses.

OBJECTIVE: This in vitro study evaluated the feasibility of intraoral scanning of two tissue-level implants for a three-unit fixed dental prosthesis (FDP) without using scan bodies, with the aim of potentially improving clinical cost efficiency. METHODS: A mandibular typodont model with two tissue-level implants - a regular-platform (RP) implant in the premolar region and a wide-platform (WP) implant in the molar region - was digitized. Three intraoral scanners (TRIOS 5, Primescan, DCS Scan) and one laboratory scanner (E4; reference scanner) were used to acquire 16 scans each, with and withou

Reliable in vitro method for the evaluation of the primary stability and load transfer of transfemoral prostheses for osseointegrated implantation.

Osseointegrated transfemoral prostheses experience aseptic complications with an incidence between 3% and 30%. The main aseptic risks are implant loosening, adverse bone remodeling, and post-operative periprosthetic fractures. Implant loosening can either be due to a lack of initial (primary) stability of the implant, which hinders bone ingrowth and therefore prevents secondary stability, or, in the long-term, to the progressive resorption of the periprosthetic bone. Post-operative periprosthetic fractures are most often caused by stress concentrations. A method to simultaneously evaluate the

Implant-supported Prostheses in Patient with Sjögren's Syndrome: Clinical Report with 3-year Follow-up.

Sjögren's syndrome (SS), an autoimmune disorder, affects the exocrine glands, including the lacrimal and salivary glands. It is characterized by symptoms of dry eye and dry mouth. As secretion of saliva decreases, patients with SS experience rampant caries, pain in the oral mucosa, inflammation and hardening of the salivary glands, abnormal taste, dysphagia, and loss of teeth earlier than healthy individuals. A removable partial denture is often used as a prosthesis after tooth loss. Compromised salivary lubrication, however, can produce traumatic ulceration of the mucosa, making use of a remo

Combined effect of the body mass index and implant size on the wear of retrieved total knee prostheses.

Total Knee Arthroplasty is a well-established surgical procedure performed to relieve pain and to restore function in knee osteoarthritis. A proper choice of the implant size is mandatory in order to guarantee the success of the implant and to respect the bone stock of tibial plateau and femoral condyles. The aim of this study was to investigate the combined effect of Body Mass Index and implant size on the wear damage of retrieved knee implants, a still debated subject. To this purpose, twelve total knee prostheses of the same design (NexGen, Zimmer, Warsaw, Indiana) but with different sizes

Monobloc radial head prostheses in complex elbow injuries: results after primary and secondary implantation.

PURPOSE: Dislocations of components, loosening of the stem, overstuffing and removal in up to 24 % of common radial head prostheses (RHP) after implantation in complex elbow injuries signal the need for improvement. The latest biomechanical evidence shows advantages for monopolar designs. Clinical results after primary and secondary implantation of the newly designed press-fit monobloc monopolar RHP in cases of complex elbow injury are evaluated. METHODS: Twenty-nine patients [median age 60 years (29-86)] were followed up retrospectively for a median of 25 months (7-54) post-operatively. Subj

Implant-supported fixed cantilever prostheses in partially edentulous arches. A seven-year prospective study.

OBJECTIVES: Setting and implementing occupational exposure limits (OELs) is one of the measures taken to protect workers from adverse effects of hazardous chemicals. The EU Regulation on Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) introduced an additional kind of exposure guidance values for workers; namely, the derived no effect level (DNEL) for workers' inhalation exposure (worker DNEL). About 500 substances have a Swedish OEL, while roughly 5000 substances have a worker DNEL derived by REACH registrants. This work aims to investigate how the Swedish OELs and
