The Use of Non-pharmacological Herbs in Treating Cough and Respiratory Symptoms in Saudi Arabia: a Multi-center Study.

BACKGROUND: Herbal medicinal products, a subgroup of complementary and alternative therapy (CAM), are widely used for pediatric respiratory symptoms in Saudi Arabia. However, regional variations and safety concerns remain understudied. OBJECTIVE: This study examines the prevalence and patterns of herbal remedy use for cough and respiratory illness among Saudi children. METHODS: A multi-center cross-sectional questionnaire-based study was conducted across five Saudi regions (N=475). Data were collected via a validated questionnaire (Cronbach's α = 0.85) and analyzed using SPSS v25. RESULTS:

[Can CPAP prevent the progression of pediatric acute respiratory distress syndrome? A decade of experience in a Reference Center].

Viral infections are the main cause of acute respiratory failure in infants, which can progress to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), with high morbidity and mortality, so it is essential to imple ment strategies that prevent this progression. Recently, it has been proposed that increased work of breathing would not only be a warning symptom during the evolution of acute respiratory failure, but also a mechanism for the progression of injury, both lungs and diaphragm, coining the concept of patient self-inflicted lung injury. Since the first reports of ARDS, the usefulness of the use

Bacterial respiratory infections in patients with COVID-19: A retrospective study from a tertiary care center in Lebanon.

BACKGROUND: Despite multiple reports of increased incidence of bacterial respiratory tract infections following COVID-19 globally, the microbiology is not yet fully elucidated. In this study, we describe the microbiology of bacterial infections and the prevalence of multidrug resistant organisms (MDROs) in hospitalized COVID-19 patients with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP), and hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) which includes both non-ventilated hospital acquired pneumonia (NVHAP) and ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP). To our knowledge, this is the first study that compares the microbio

[Trends in the management of respiratory distress syndrome in very preterm infants transferred to the Clinical Center of the University of Debrecen].

INTRODUCTION: Although in utero transport is recommended in the case of threatening preterm delivery, it is not always possible. Management during postnatal transport may influence neonatal outcomes. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the trends in patient characteristics, respiratory management and outcomes in very preterm infants requiring postnatal transfer between 2008 and 2021. METHOD: We conducted a retrospective study. Data were collected from both written and electronic medical records. Trends were assessed using joinpoint regression analysis and summarized as annual

Temporal dynamics of persistent germinal centers and memory B cell differentiation following respiratory virus infection.

Following infection or immunization, memory B cells (MBCs) and long-lived plasma cells provide humoral immunity that can last for decades. Most principles of MBC biology have been determined with hapten-protein carrier models or fluorescent protein immunizations. Here, we examine the temporal dynamics of the germinal center (GC) B cell and MBC response following mouse influenza A virus infection. We find that antiviral B cell responses within the lung-draining mediastinal lymph node (mLN) and the spleen are distinct in regard to duration, enrichment for antigen-binding cells, and class switchi

Epidemiology of respiratory distress and the illness severity in late preterm or term infants: a prospective multi-center study.

BACKGROUND: The severity of respiratory distress was associated with neonatal prognosis. This study aimed to explore the clinical characteristics, therapeutic interventions and short-term outcomes of late preterm or term infants who required respiratory support, and compare the usage of different illness severity assessment tools. METHODS: Seven neonatal intensive care units in tertiary hospitals were recruited. From November 2008 to October 2009, neonates born at ≥ 34 weeks' gestational age, admitted at < 72 hours of age, requiring continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) or mechanical ven

High prevalence rate of multidrug resistance among nosocomial pathogens in the respiratory care center of a tertiary hospital.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: There is an increasing need for respiratory care centers (RCCs) for patients who require prolonged mechanical ventilation after intensive care unit (ICU) stay. Nosocomial infections occur at a high rate in ICUs, but there have been few studies of nosocomial infections in RCCs in Taiwan. METHODS: The infection rates, sources, and pathogens of nosocomial infections in the RCC of a tertiary hospital were retrospectively analyzed from January 2001 to December 2002. Nosocomial infections were defined in accordance with the recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control

Estimation and correction of respiratory motion in pediatric renal SPECT through a data-driven center-of-mass method.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory motion is known to cause blurring in Single-Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) images which can mask or mimic disease. Pediatric imaging with 99mTc-labeled dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) is used to assess cortical defects in kidneys and may be especially susceptible to artifacts introduced by respiratory motion due to the thin kidney cortices and small kidney volumes seen in many pediatric patients. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to assess a data-driven method to estimate respiratory motion signals in pediatric 99mTc-DMSA renal SPECT and to evaluate th

Air pollution and its effects on emergency room visits in tertiary respiratory care centers in Delhi, India.

Environmental pollution has harmful effects on human health, particularly the respiratory system. We aimed to study the impact of daily ambient air pollution on daily emergency room visits for acute respiratory symptoms. This study was conducted in two tertiary respiratory care centres in Delhi, India. Daily counts of emergency room visits were collected. All patients attending the emergency room were screened for acute onset (less than 2 weeks) of respiratory symptoms and were recruited if they were staying in Delhi continuously for at least 4 weeks and having onset (≤2 weeks) of respiratory

Molecular identification of adenovirus causing respiratory tract infection in pediatric patients at the University of Malaya Medical Center.

BACKGROUND: There are at least 51 adenovirus serotypes (AdV) known to cause human infections. The prevalence of the different human AdV (HAdV) serotypes varies among different regions. Presently, there are no reports of the prevalent HAdV types found in Malaysia. The present study was undertaken to identify the HAdV types associated primarily with respiratory tract infections (RTI) of young children in Malaysia. METHODS: Archived HAdV isolates from pediatric patients with RTI seen at the University of Malaya Medical Center (UMMC), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 1999 to 2005 were used. Virus isol

[Side effects of drugs on the respiratory tract: experiences of the Swiss Drug Monitoring Center from 1991 to 1995].

Between 1991 and 1995 about 3% of the unwanted drug-induced side effects reported to the Swiss Drug Monitoring Center (SANZ) concerned pulmonary disturbances (144 out of a total of 4824 reports). The most frequent reports were those about cough and taste disorders caused by ACE-inhibitors, smell disorders caused by antimicotics, and asthma attacks caused by nonsteroidal antirheumatics or betablocking eye drops. 33% of these unwanted side effects have been classified as severe. By spontaneous reporting a correct calculation of incidence is not possible. The reports, however, have signal functio

Link between bilaterality and type 2 inflammation in respiratory epithelial adenomatoid hamartomas: A two-center retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Sinonasal respiratory epithelial adenomatoid hamartomas (REAH) are rare benign lesions with diverse clinical characteristics. Their pathogenesis remains unclear, with hypotheses suggesting either an inflammatory process or neoplastic origin. Despite their clinical heterogeneity, a formal subtype classification is lacking. This study analyzes the clinical features of surgically treated sinonasal REAH and investigates disease characteristics based on bilaterality, particularly in relation to type 2 chronic rhinosinusitis. METHODS: This retrospective analysis included patients with R

"De Novo" Hypercapnic Respiratory Failure Unmasking Neuromuscular Disorders: Experiences From a Tertiary Care Center and Review of Literature.

OBJECTIVES: Neuromuscular disorders could have respiratory involvement early or late into illness. Rarely, patients may present with a hypercapnic respiratory failure (with minimal motor signs) unmasking an underlying disease. There are hardly any studies which have addressed the spectrum and challenges involved in management of this subset, especially in the real-world scenario. METHODS: A retrospective study comprising consecutive patients hospitalized with hypercapnic respiratory failure as the sole/dominant manifestation. The clinical-electrophysiological spectrum, phrenic conductions, di

Endothelial Glycocalyx Degradation Patterns in Sepsis-Associated Pediatric Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome: A Single Center Retrospective Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Sepsis-associated destruction of the pulmonary microvascular endothelial glycocalyx (EGCX) creates a vulnerable endothelial surface, contributing to the development of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Constituents of the EGCX shed into circulation, glycosaminoglycans and proteoglycans, may serve as biomarkers of endothelial dysfunction. We sought to define the patterns of plasma EGCX degradation products in children with sepsis-associated pediatric ARDS (PARDS), and test their association with clinical outcomes. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed a prospective cohort
