Clinical Nursing in Times of War and a Pandemic.

Nurses who served in the Vietnam War and those who cared for patients during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic surge may be separated by decades, but they share the experience of caring for large numbers of critically injured, ill, or dying patients while risking their own lives. This article reviews the findings of two studies, one conducted in 1986 based on interviews with Vietnam War nurses, and one conducted in 2020 based on interviews with nurses during COVID-19, and explores the idea that professional nurses from different generations have similar thoughts when their lives are in danger and pat

Relationship between parenting stress profiles, work-family conflict, and adolescent problem behavior: Variable-centered and person-centered approaches.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent problem behaviors, including both internalizing (e.g., emotional symptoms) and externalizing difficulties (e.g., conduct problems, hyperactivity), are a significant risk factor in adolescent development. This study assessed the impact of maternal parenting stress on adolescent problem behaviors and explored mechanisms underlying this relationship. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to (1) identify potential profiles of maternal parenting stress, (2) examine differences in adolescent problem behaviors across these profiles, and (3) determine whether maternal work-family conflic

Pandemic Shadows: Unmasking Gender Disparities in Academic Productivity and Work-Family Conflict.

Women academics experience inequalities across multiple facets in the university context, including research productivity; teaching, advising and mentoring responsibilities; service workload; and cross-over stress between work and family obligations. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated these gender disparities. Drawing upon 2021 data from 467 research faculty and staff at a lead research university in Canada, we highlight such inequalities. While descriptive statistics suggest that men and women report similar perceived setbacks in productivity due to COVID-19, results from structural equation m

Ethics of medical care and clinical research: a qualitative study of principal investigators in biomedical HIV prevention research.

In clinical research there is a tension between the role of a doctor, who must serve the best interests of the patient, and the role of the researcher, who must produce knowledge that may not have any immediate benefits for the research participant. This tension is exacerbated in HIV research in low and middle income countries, which frequently uncovers comorbidities other than the condition under study. Some bioethicists argue that as the goals of medicine and those of research are distinct, it is a mistake for researchers to assume therapeutic responsibilities while engaging in research. Oth

The personal and the public in residents' burnout: a cross-sectional investigation.

BACKGROUND: Medical residents are especially prone to burnout. Burnout has historically been viewed as a work-related condition. Burnout also occurs in life domains other than work, such as relationships and parenthood. The present investigation takes a holistic view of resident burnout, considering both public (i.e., work-related) and personal (i.e., couple, parental) burnout. The present investigation examines the interplay between resident burnout in different life domains, their antecedent (i.e., work-family conflict), and outcomes (i.e., job, couple, and parental satisfaction; turnover an

Gender differences in work-family conflict and mental health among employed Australian parents: findings from the HILDA survey.

AIMS: This study aims to examine the longitudinal associations between work-family conflict (WFC) and mental health among working parents. Specifically, we investigated whether within-person changes in WFC and family-to-work conflict (FWC) are associated with changes in mental health. METHODS: Data from the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia survey were used to employ within-person fixed effects regression analysis to examine associations between WFC and mental health in working-age adults (18-64 years) with parental responsibilities for children ≤14 years. The outcome, genera

The psychosomatic stress symptoms included nervousness, restlessness, insomnia, shortness-of-breath, and fainting. In general, stress symptoms showed little relationship to task loads, farm complexity, and intrapersona

The Status of and Factors Associated With Quiet Quitting Among Clinical Nurses: An Evaluation and Latent Profile Analysis.

AIMS: This study aimed to examine the prevalence and latent profiles of quiet quitting among clinical nurses and identify factors associated with this condition across different nurse subgroups. BACKGROUND: Quiet quitting among clinical nurses poses a hidden threat to nursing workforce stability and quality of care. Burnout, work-family conflict, and professional identity are closely associated with quiet quitting in nurses. However, academic studies examined quiet quitting as a single global construct, without identifying the potentially heterogeneous profiles within the nursing workforce.

"Because you just get stuck in this hamster wheel" - experience and narratives of work-family conflicts among patients in psychosomatic rehabilitation.

BACKGROUND: Workplace problems are among the most common reasons for entering psychosomatic rehabilitation (PR). Parents with mental disorders (MD) often face additional caregiving demands alongside combined work and family responsibilities. However, this issue has received little attention in rehabilitation research so far. This so-called Work-Family Conflict (WFC) is associated with depression, anxiety, and other mental health conditions, yet little is known about how patients with MD experience and interpret these conflicts. METHODS: We conducted a secondary qualitative analysis of 32 semi

A meta-analysis on interparental conflict, parenting, and child adjustment in divorced families: Examining mediation using meta-analytic structural equation models.

Every year, parental divorce becomes the reality of many families. The aim of this meta-analysis was to identify post-divorce family processes to explain child functioning. Both direct and indirect associations between interparental conflict, parenting, and child adjustment were examined. After a systematic search for articles published before October 2019, we coded 2257 correlations in 115 samples of N = 24,854 divorced families. Analyses consisted of: (1) Performing multiple three-level meta-analyses to calculate the bivariate correlations between interparental conflict, parenting (i.e., sup

Latent profile analysis was further employed to identify potential subgroups of workplace telepressure. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted using convenience sampling, with data collected from March to April 2026 in Sichuan Province, China. Standardized instruments were used for measurement, including the Workplace Telepressure Scale,

Psychoanalysis and diabetic control: a single-case study.

The records of the 3 1/2 year, five times weekly psychoanalysis of a diabetic teenager with recurrent diabetic imbalance were examined using non-experimental single-case design methodology. A selected set of analytic themes was operationalized and independently rated for each week of the psychoanalysis. A weekly index of the quality of diabetic balance was also obtained for the same period. Time series analysis was used to examine the relationship between psychoanalytic themes and glycosuria. Two themes of psychic conflict were found to predict short-term changes in diabetic control. In the lo
