Viscoelastic behavior of fractionated ovine submaxillary mucins.

Solution properties of fractionated ovine submaxillary mucin (OSM) and asialo OSM (aOSM) in aqueous guanidine hydrochloride have been investigated using light scattering and rheological methods. For the first time we present viscometric evidence in both dilute and concentrated solution that the molecular structure of OSM is that of a wormlike chain. The intrinsic viscosity shows molecular weight dependence consistent with the linear extended chain conformation observed by light scattering measurements. The viscoelastic behavior of the OSM fractions in aqueous guanidine hydrochloride was furthe

Abdominal dosimetry for supradiaphragmatic irradiation of Hodgkin's disease in pregnancy. Experimental data and clinical considerations.

An experimental dosimetry by an Alderson Phantom was carried out at the Istituto Nazionale Tumori of Milan to evaluate the scattered radiation in the abdomen for a radiotherapeutic treatment of some lymph node supradiaphragmatic regions. This information is very important when a radiological treatment of stage I and IIA Hodgkin's disease must be set up after the 3rd month of pregnancy. A dose of 3000 rad (30 Gy) was given to left supraclavicular and mediastinum as if involved by a lymphoma. A cobalt 60 unit and a 6 MeV linear accelerator were sequentially tested. Scattered radiation was measur

Dose estimation to critical organs from vertex field treatment of brain tumors.

PURPOSE: Radiation management of intracranial tumors may require a noncoplanar vertex field that often irradiates the entire length of the body. In view of radiation related risks to the normal tissues dose estimation to the extracranial organs such as the thyroid gland, spinal cord, heart, and genitalia is performed for a vertex field. METHODS AND MATERIALS: A vertex field used clinically was reproduced on an anthropomorphic Rando phantom to measure radiation dose to various organs in the primary beam. Three photon beams (4, 6, and 10 MV), and two high energy electron beams (16 and 20 MeV) w

Subjective and objective image quality evaluation of a scatter correction algorithm applied to hip radiographs.

INTRODUCTION: Hip radiographs are common examinations but are technically challenging because of variable patient body habitus and anatomy. Physical anti-scatter grids improve contrast but increase radiation dose and introduce practical limitations, particularly in trauma and mobile imaging. Software-based scatter correction offers a potential alternative; however, evidence for musculoskeletal applications remains limited. AIM: To evaluate the impact of a software-based scatter correction algorithm on hip radiograph image quality using objective image quality metrics and subjective observer a

Estimating global agricultural effects of geoengineering using volcanic eruptions.

Solar radiation management is increasingly considered to be an option for managing global temperatures1,2, yet the economic effects of ameliorating climatic changes by scattering sunlight back to space remain largely unknown3. Although solar radiation management may increase crop yields by reducing heat stress4, the effects of concomitant changes in available sunlight have never been empirically estimated. Here we use the volcanic eruptions that inspired modern solar radiation management proposals as natural experiments to provide the first estimates, to our knowledge, of how the stratospheric

Production and compositional analysis of full-length influenza virus hemagglutinin in Nanodiscs: Insights from multi-angle light scattering.

The global threat of pandemics highlights the urgency of developing innovative vaccine strategies. Viral spike proteins are the primary antigens recognized by the immune system and serve as key targets for vaccine development. This study reports the production of full-length Influenza A virus surface glycoprotein, hemagglutinin (HA), and its incorporation into Nanodiscs (NDs). HA was expressed in insect cells and purified using detergents, maintaining its functional integrity. Characterisation by size-exclusion chromatography coupled with multi-angle light scattering (SEC-MALS) confirmed that

Re-evaluating physical shielding in paediatric chest computed tomography: a phantom-based assessment of dose distribution and image quality.

Caregivers may be at risk of exposure to scattered radiation during paediatric chest computed tomography (CT) examinations. This study re-evaluated the effects of physical shielding on paediatric chest CT under controlled experimental conditions using an anthropomorphic paediatric phantom, with an emphasis on the organ dose distribution, scattered radiation relevant to caregivers, and image quality. The phantom was scanned using two CT protocols: with and without bismuth shielding applied to the anterior chest region. Organ doses were measured using real-time scintillation detectors placed in

Use of Artificial Intelligence to Reduce Radiation Exposure at Fluoroscopy-Guided Endoscopic Procedures.

OBJECTIVES: Exposure to ionizing radiation remains a hazard for patients and healthcare providers. We evaluated the utility of an artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled fluoroscopy system to minimize radiation exposure during image-guided endoscopic procedures. METHODS: We conducted a prospective study of 100 consecutive patients who underwent fluoroscopy-guided endoscopic procedures. Patients underwent interventions using either conventional or AI-equipped fluoroscopy system that uses ultrafast collimation to limit radiation exposure to the region of interest. The main outcome measure was to c

Radiation exposure benefit of a lead cap in invasive cardiology.

BACKGROUND: Occupational head exposure to radiation in cardiologists may cause radiation induced cataracts and an increased risk of brain cancer. OBJECTIVE: To determine the effectiveness of 0.5 mm lead equivalent caps, not previously used in invasive cardiology, in comparison with a 1.0 mm lead equivalent ceiling mounted lead glass screen. DESIGN: An anthropomorphic Alderson-Rando phantom was used to represent the patient. Scatter entrance skin air kerma to the operator position (S-ESAK-O) was measured during fluoroscopy for all standard angulations and the S-ESAK-O per dose-area product (D

Radiation risk to the urologist during endourologic procedures, and a new shield that reduces exposure.

OBJECTIVES: With the increasing use of endourologic procedures to diagnose and treat urologic problems, the urologist's exposure to radiation from fluoroscopy becomes an important safety consideration. Although collimation of the x-ray beam generally prevents direct radiation exposure by the urologist, the patient absorbs radiation during the procedure and becomes a secondary source of exposure through radiation scatter. METHODS: We measured radiation exposure to the urologist during endourologic procedures using standard body shields and thyroid collars. We repeated our surveys using a newly

Three-dimensional single beam nano-acoustic tweezer using ring-shaped ultrahigh-frequency ultrasonic needle transducer.

Acoustic tweezers use sound waves to manipulate bioparticles and cells, offering safety benefits due to ultrasound's deep penetration. However, traditional single-beam acoustic tweezers (SBAT) struggle with 3D trapping and spatial resolution due to strong axial scattering radiation forces and limited frequencies. Here, we address these challenges by developing a ring-shaped ultra-high frequency ultrasonic needle transducer (RS-UHF-NT), enabling 3D single-cell trapping, nanoparticle manipulation, and direct targeting. The transducer's ring-shaped design with a central hole minimizes near-field

Insights into Testicular Radiation Exposure in the Orthopedic Surgeon.

Testicular radiation exposure has been linked to diminished spermatogenesis, male infertility, and potentially testicular cancer. Despite this, the risk of testicular exposure from intraoperative fluoroscopy to the male orthopedic surgeon has yet to be studied. The purpose of this study is to determine factors associated with unnecessary testicular radiation exposure in male orthopedic surgeons. The study was designed to answer the following questions: (1) Do the designs of lead apron protection result in any differential testicular radiation exposure? (2) Does the position of the surgeon (sta

Frequency-Domain Dynamic Light Scattering (FEDSA) for in vivo screening of breast tissue abnormalities: A proof-of-concept study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Dynamic light scattering (DLS) provides valuable information on nanoscale and microscale dynamics, but its systematic application to in vivo tissue evaluation remains limited. This study introduces field effect detection by spectral analysis (FEDSA), a frequency-domain approach designed to analyze backscattered light signals and identify tissue abnormalities associated with the field cancerization effect in breast tissue. The objective was to establish a proof of concept showing that FEDSA can differentiate normal from abnormal tissue. METHODS: A two-stage proof-of-c

Usefulness of an additional lead shielding device in reducing occupational radiation exposure during interventional endoscopic procedures: An observational study.

Adoption of interventional endoscopic procedures is increasing with increasing prevalence of diseases. However, medical radiation exposure is concerning; therefore, radiation protection for medical staff is important. However, there is limited information on the usefulness of an additional lead shielding device during interventional endoscopic procedures. Therefore, we aimed to determine whether an additional lead shielding device protects medical staff from radiation. An X-ray unit (CUREVISTA; Hitachi Medical Systems, Tokyo, Japan) with an over-couch X-ray system was used. Intraoperative 2D C-arm and 3D O-arm in children: a comparative phantom study.

PURPOSE: Exposure to ionizing radiation is a concern for children during intraoperative imaging. We aimed to assess the radiation exposure to the paediatric patient with 2D and 3D imaging. METHODS: To evaluate the radiation exposure, patient absorbed doses to the organs were measured in an anthropomorphic phantom representing a five-year-old child, using thermoluminescent dosimeters. For comparative purposes, organ doses were measured using a C-arm for one minute of fluoroscopy and one acquisition with an O-arm. The cone-beam was centred on the pelvis. Direct and scattered irradiations were m

Backscatter dose from metallic materials due to obliquely incident high-energy photon beams.

If metallic material is exposed to ionizing radiation of sufficient high energy, an increase in dose due to backscatter radiation occurs in front of this material. Our purpose in this study was to quantify these doses at variable distances between scattering materials and the detector at axial beam angles between 0 degree (zero angle in beams eye view) and 90 degrees. Copper, silver and lead sheets embedded in a phantom of perspex were exposed to 10 MV-bremsstrahlung. The detector we developed is based on the fluorescence property of pyromellitic acid (1,2,4,5 benzenetetracarboxylic acid) afte
