Si-glass microfluidics have long provided unprecedented precision, robustness and optical clarity. However, chip fabrication is costly (∼500 USD per chip) and in practice, devices are not heavily reused. We present a method to reduce the cost-per-chip by two orders of magnitude (∼5 USD per chip), rendering Si-glass microfluidics disposable for many applications. In this study, the dissolution rate of SiNx coatings was investigated as a function of coating composition, in comparison to a cobalt chromium molybdenum alloy (CoCrMo) reference. SiNx coatings with N/Si ratios of 0.3, 0.8 and 1.1 were investigated. The work described herein deals with efforts to make a persuasive correlation between structural characteristics and electrochemical lithium storage for a silicon oxycarbide prepared from poly(methylhydrogensiloxane) and divinylbenzene. We report an 86-year-old woman with a large tracheal laceration caused by tracheal intubation at cardiopulmonary arrest who underwent a successful stent procedure. Tracheal laceration developed in the membranous portion longitudinally 6 cm in length to 2 cm above the carina. Following 9 days' tracheal intubation, a Y-shaped silicon stent was inserted over the lacerated trachea. Four months after the stenting procedure, we removed the Y-shaped silicon stent from the healed membranous wall. The patient returned to daily life without requiring thoracotomy.

A new beam-assisted process for removing silicon from a surface in the nanometer scale in a conventional scanning electron microscope is presented. This approach is based on focused electron beam induced etching with pure chlorine gas being used as the precursor. The silicon surface of commercial atomic force microscopy (AFM) probes loses its hydrophilicity by adsorption of airborne and package-released hydrophobic organic contaminants. In the study on human vertebral composites, silicon was found to be related to the height of the vertebral column. The element ratio of silicon to calcium in the lumbar vertebra was twice that of the lowest one in the cervical vertebra. PURPOSE: To evaluate clinical characteristics, surgical aspects, and visual outcomes of pediatric patients who underwent pars plana vitrectomy and silicone oil injection for complicated retinal detachment.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The records of 24 patients (25 eyes) younger than 18 years were retrospectively reviewed. All patients underwent pars plana vitrectomy and silicone oil injection for complicated retinal detachment between January 1995 and June 2004 in the Ophthalmology Department of Dokuz Eylul University, Izmir, Turkey. In recent years, the demand for cosmetic interventions to augment soft tissue by injecting different substances has increased, due to their apparent innocuity. However, these procedures are not free from adverse reactions, such as the formation of foreign body granulomas, a phenomenon described in literature with most of the materials used. We report the case of a female patient with inflammatory lesions of the face, whose diagnosis was made after the histopathological study, which revealed a granuloma caused by liquid silicone.

BACKGROUND: A patient with intraocular silicone oildeposits underwent paracentral corneal incision but the corneal sutures were never removed and 7 years later a perforating corneal transplantation was performed due to corneal opacification.
