BACKGROUND: The prognostic value of exercise thallium-201 imaging has been well established in referral patient populations at tertiary care centers, but these results may be influenced by referral bias.

Single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) with thallium-201-chloride (201Tl) was used in 22 patients to assess the grade of malignancy of brain tumors. Low- and high-grade malignant gliomas could be well differentiated by calculating the Grade Index (GI), i.e., 201Tl uptake in the tumor area relative to a contralateral brain region. In seven patients with vasospastic angina, a transient myocardial perfusion defect was demonstrated on Tl-201 myocardial imaging after hyperventilation (HV). The development of spasm on one or more coronary arteries after HV was confirmed by later coronary arteriographic studies, with the perfusing area of the coronary arteries being compatible with the scintigraphic location of the defect. INTRODUCTION: Thallium poisoning is a rare but highly toxic heavy metal intoxication associated with peripheral neuropathy. However, longitudinal data integrating toxicokinetic profiles with electrophysiological outcomes remain limited.
METHODS: Five patients with confirmed acute thallium poisoning were evaluated. Clinical symptoms, laboratory results, dynamic serum and urinary thallium concentrations, and electrophysiological results were recorded. All patients underwent electrophysiological follow-up one year later. Thallium elimination kinetics were analyzed using nonlinear regression.

Thallium (Tl) is one of the most toxic heavy metals and is found ubiquitously in the earth's crust. To investigate the cellular responses to and against Tl cytotoxicity, we conducted DNA microarray analysis using three human cell lines of different origins: SH-SY5Y (neuroblast-derived), HEK293T (embryonic kidney-derived), and Huh-7 (hepatoma-derived) cells. Primary hyperparathyroidism, although often silent clinically, may lead to significant morbidity if it remains untreated. In more than 95% of all cases the cause is a parathyroid adenoma or glandular hyperplasia. Regression of disease follows successful surgical excision of the abnormal parathyroid gland.
